This book was released on 1994 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Access to Information Act and its companion legislation, the Privacy Act came into force on Canada Day, 1983. While 10 years is a modest milestone in the life of any legislation, it is an appropriate occasion on which to reflect upon the Act and how it has affected legal, social and administrative landscapes in Canada. A number of questions emerge in this process. How did the Act come into being? How has it functioned? Who has used the Act and to what ends? have we come any closer to prying open the iron gates of administrative secrecy? This brief document attempts to answer these questions, as well as to raise a few about what may lie ahead on the information highway.
Book Synopsis The Nature of Inquisitorial Processes in Administrative Regimes by : Laverne Jacobs
Download or read book The Nature of Inquisitorial Processes in Administrative Regimes written by Laverne Jacobs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ’Inquisitorial processes’ refers to the inquiry powers of administrative governance and this book examines the use of these powers in administrative law across seven jurisdictions. The book brings together recent developments in mixed inquisitorial-adversarial administrative decision-making on a hitherto neglected area of comparative administrative process and institutional design. Reaching important conclusions about their own jurisdictions and raising questions which may be explored in others, the book's chapters are comparative. They explore the terminology and scope of the concept of inquisitorial process, justifications for the use of inquiry powers, the effectiveness of inquisitorial processes and the implications of the adoption of such powers. The book will set in motion continued dialogue about the inherent challenges of balancing policy goals, fairness, resources and institutional design within administrative law decision-making by offering theoretical, practical and empirical analyses. This will be a valuable book to government policy-makers, administrative law decision-makers, lawyers and academics.

Book Synopsis Human DNA by : Bartha Maria Knoppers
Download or read book Human DNA written by Bartha Maria Knoppers and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1997-07-30 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Human DNA: Law and Policy" provides the first international debate on a topic of universal concern. No book has brought together such a diverse range of multidisciplinary ethical and legal expertise on the highly controversial issues surrounding the use, storage, exchange and sale of the very stuff' of which we are made - human genetic material. Testing of human genetic material involves a variety of samples (pathological samples, newborn screening samples, samples leftover' after testing, and research samples), shared around the world. This places consent issues on an individual, familial, and societal level. The comparative and international perspectives presented reveal the transnational nature of genetic studies. This book focuses on the issues of DNA sampling and testing, consent and confidentiality, banking policies, genetic epidemiology and diversity. Since financial and technological pressures are inextricably linked to human genetics research, commercialization and patents are also examined. Academic researchers, policy makers and industry will benefit from the learned papers and reports of the discussion, which is rich in diversity of opinion, controversial in the diversity of policy and approaches presented, anchored on scientific facts and yet sensitive to cultural, political and economic differences.

Book Synopsis Reasonable Expectations of Privacy? by : Sjaak Nouwt
Download or read book Reasonable Expectations of Privacy? written by Sjaak Nouwt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1967, Justice John Marshall Harlan introduced the litmus test of ‘a reasonable expectation of privacy’ in his concurring opinion in the US Supreme Court case of Katz v. United States. Privacy, regulations to protect privacy, and data protection have been legal and social issues in many Western countries for a number of decades. However, recent measures to combat terrorism, to fight crime, and to increase security, together with the growing social acceptance of privacy-invasive technologies can be considered a serious threat to the fundamental right to privacy. What is the purport of ‘reasonable expectations of privacy’? Reasonable expectations of privacy and the reality of data protection is the title of a research project being carried out by TILT, the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society at Tilburg University, The Netherlands. The project is aimed at developing an international research network of privacy experts (professionals, academics, policymakers) and to carry out research on the practice, meaning, and legal performance of privacy and data protection in an international perspective. Part of the research project was to analyse the concept of privacy and the reality of data protection in case law, with video surveillance and workplace privacy as two focal points. The eleven country reports regarding case law on video surveillance and workplace privacy are the core of the present book. The conclusions drawn by the editors are intended to trigger and stimulate an international debate on the use and possible drawbacks of the ‘reasonable expectations of privacy’ concept. The editors are all affiliated to TILT – Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society, Tilburg University, The Netherlands. This is Volume 7 in the Information Technology and Law (IT&Law) Series

Book Synopsis Politics and Journalism in Francophone Africa by : Marie-Soleil Frère
Download or read book Politics and Journalism in Francophone Africa written by Marie-Soleil Frère and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive approach of the media, journalism and politics in Sub-Saharan Francophone Africa. The author argues that there are common features that the media and journalism share in the seventeen countries of Francophone Africa and these make the local media systems different from what they are in neighboring English-speaking African countries, and in the rest of the world. The approach of the media in French-speaking Africa has not only to be “de-Westernized”, but also to step out of general overviews considering “African media." This project shows the historical, political, economic and sociological characteristics of the media systems of seventeen French-speaking countries of Africa.
