Book excerpt: The coastal temperate rainforest of southeast Alaska is part of the largest temperate rainforest in the world and delivers a vast array of goods and services for local and global economies. Even-aged western hemlock-Sitka spruce (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.)/Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carrière) forests that regenerated after past harvests are projected to be the primary source of future value as landowners transition away from old-growth harvesting. Although current knowledge of long-term thinning effects in this region is limited compared to other regions, managers have options for the even-aged, young-growth stands. This report documents the establishment of, and 5- and 10-year overstory and understory changes following, the Prince of Wales Commercial Thinning Study, a research and demonstration project codeveloped by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station and USDA Forest Service Tongass National Forest to increase regional knowledge of silvicultural thinning methods. We compare the effects of five treatment levels on a suite of stand vegetation components and assess the tradeoffs for retention of alternative stand structures. Treatments include (1) a no-action control, (2) thinning from above, (3) crown thinning, (4) thinning from below, and (5) a hybrid approach that we call strip thinning. This report provides a basis for initial guidance on managing commercial-size, young-growth forests in southeast Alaska.

Book excerpt: Nontimber forest products from southern Alaska (also called special forest products) have been used for millennia as resources vital to the livelihoods and culture of Alaska Natives and, more recently, as subsistence resources for the welfare of all citizens. Many of these products are now being sold, and Alaskans seek additional income opportunities through sustainable harvest and manufacture of such forest resources. We discuss the unique legal, regulatory, land tenure, geographic, vegetation, and climatic context that southern Alaska presents for marketing nontimber forest products; summarize the various species and types of products being harvested; and consider the marketing challenges and opportunities new entrepreneurs will encounter. The information and resources we provide are intended to enhance income opportunities for all Alaskans, while sustaining the organisms harvested, respecting traditional activities, and ensuring equitable access to resources.

Book excerpt: This report documents the results from the first "5-year" round of understory responses to the Tongass-Wide Young-Growth Studies (TWYGS) treatments, especially in relation to their effects on food resources for black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis). Responses of understory vegetation to precommercial silviculture experiments after their first 4 to 8 years posttreatment were analyzed with the Forage Resource Evaluation System for Habitat (FRESH)-Deer model. The studies were conducted in western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla)-Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) young-growth forests in southeast Alaska. All four TWYGS experiments were studied: (I) planting of red alder (Alnus rubra) within 1- to 5-year-old stands; (II) precommercial thinning at narrow and wide spacings (549 and 331 trees per hectare, respectively) in 15- to 25-year-old stands; (III) precommercial thinning at medium spacing (420 trees per hectare) with and without pruning in 25- to 35-yearold stands; and (IV) precommercial thinning at wide spacing (203 trees per hectare) with and without slash treatment versus thinning by girdling in >35-year-old stands. All experiments also included untreated control stands of identical age. FRESHDeer was used to evaluate the implications for deer habitat in terms of forage resources (species-specific biomass, digestible protein, and digestible dry matter) relative to deer metabolic requirements in summer (at two levels of requirements-- maintenance only vs. lactation) and in winter (at six levels of snow depth). Analyses for both summer and winter indicated that in all cases except for Experiment I (red alder planting in 1- to 5-year-old stands), habitat values of all treatments exceeded untreated controls (P 0.05), and earlier treatments yielded greater benefits than did later treatments (i.e., treating at 15 to 25 years of age was more effective than at 25 to 35 years, and at 35 years was least effective). When compared to a wide range of old-growth stands from throughout the region, it was apparent that in summer and winter with low snow depths (
