Book excerpt: The Business of Biotechnology: From the Bench to the Street thoroughly examines the existing and future business challenges for biotechnology, providing a unique insight into the intricate web of critical factors with which biotechnology entrepreneurs must come to terms if they wish to be successful. The book begins with discussions of the evolution of biotechnology; entrepreneurship in the biotechnology industry; university-industry technology transfer process; and the life cycle of a biotechnology company. It considers the prospects for biotechnology, from the perspective of a venture capitalist and human resource practitioner. There are separate chapters that deal with the cloning and expression of recombinant gene products; developing strategies to reduce the cost-to-produce (CTP) therapeutic proteins; intellectual property protection; and the regulation of commercial biotechnology. The final chapters cover the marketing of biotechnology companies and products; the performance of biotechnology stocks; mergers and acquisitions in the biotechnology industry, and prospects for the Japanese and European biotechnology industry.

Book excerpt: Profiles over 1,300 companies active in biotechnology, lists venture capital firms, and analyzes the biotechnology industry. The data on companies includes the names of officers and directors, type of financing and names of investors when applicable, budget for research and development, revenues, number of employees, primary focus, search terms, and products on the shelf and in the oven. In addition to the main listing, which is alphabetical by company name, firms are listed by location, areas of interest such as biomass conversion and fungi, and key biotechnology areas such as Alzheimer's Disease and gene therapy. Other sections report on mergers, acquisitions, and fundraising; and analyze such aspects of the industry as funding, public firms, and resources in commercial biotechnology. The 1989 and 1991 editions were published by Stockton Press, New York; the 1995 and 1997 editions by IBI. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: Between 1973 and 2016, the ways to manipulate DNA to endow new characteristics in an organism (that is, biotechnology) have advanced, enabling the development of products that were not previously possible. What will the likely future products of biotechnology be over the next 5â€"10 years? What scientific capabilities, tools, and/or expertise may be needed by the regulatory agencies to ensure they make efficient and sound evaluations of the likely future products of biotechnology? Preparing for Future Products of Biotechnology analyzes the future landscape of biotechnology products and seeks to inform forthcoming policy making. This report identifies potential new risks and frameworks for risk assessment and areas in which the risks or lack of risks relating to the products of biotechnology are well understood.

Book excerpt: The ability of the United States to sustain a dominant global position in biotechnology lies in maintaining its primacy in basic life-science research and developing a strong resource base for bioprocess engineering and bioproduct manufacturing. This book examines the status of bioprocessing and biotechnology in the United States; current bioprocess technology, products, and opportunities; and challenges of the future and what must be done to meet those challenges. It gives recommendations for action to provide suitable incentives to establish a national program in bioprocess-engineering research, development, education, and technology transfer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tremendous progress in biology over the last half century - from Watson and Crick's elucidation of the structure of DNA to today's astonishing, rapid progress in the field of synthetic biology - has positioned us for significant innovation in chemical production. New bio-based chemicals, improved public health through improved drugs and diagnostics, and biofuels that reduce our dependency on oil are all results of research and innovation in the biological sciences. In the past decade, we have witnessed major advances made possible by biotechnology in areas such as rapid, low-cost DNA sequencing, metabolic engineering, and high-throughput screening. The manufacturing of chemicals using biological synthesis and engineering could expand even faster. A proactive strategy - implemented through the development of a technical roadmap similar to those that enabled sustained growth in the semiconductor industry and our explorations of space - is needed if we are to realize the widespread benefits of accelerating the industrialization of biology. Industrialization of Biology presents such a roadmap to achieve key technical milestones for chemical manufacturing through biological routes. This report examines the technical, economic, and societal factors that limit the adoption of bioprocessing in the chemical industry today and which, if surmounted, would markedly accelerate the advanced manufacturing of chemicals via industrial biotechnology. Working at the interface of synthetic chemistry, metabolic engineering, molecular biology, and synthetic biology, Industrialization of Biology identifies key technical goals for next-generation chemical manufacturing, then identifies the gaps in knowledge, tools, techniques, and systems required to meet those goals, and targets and timelines for achieving them. This report also considers the skills necessary to accomplish the roadmap goals, and what training opportunities are required to produce the cadre of skilled scientists and engineers needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began several years ago as a project organized by members of the Science and Technology Studies section of the American Political Science Association. It is part of an ongoing attempt by members of the section and others to focus scholarly attention on the political and social implications of technological change and scientific advances. Part of the concern is to identify theories, conceptual frameworks, and concepts from political science that can usefully be applied to the study of science and technology. Part of the concern is to explore how science and technologyrelated concerns help illuminate and test some of the enduring theories of political science. We hope to contribute to the development of a strong theoretical underpinning for science and technology studies. We hope that such an enrichment of the theoretical bases for understanding science and technology-related phenomena will also contribute to more effective and appropriate public policies for regulating and encouraging scientific and technological developments. This book is an attempt to marry theoretical exposition and applied policy inquiry.
