Banks have to adopt a risk management approach to maximise shareholder value/net value and to conform to the RBI guidelines (1999). Further the adoption of ALM and diversification of activities to earn fee income has resulted in the assumption of risks which had to be hedged by derivatives. Since major banks are foreign exchange dealers, exchange risk and interest risk have to be covered. Finally derivatives themselves carry a lot of risk which has become a major concern of regulators. They make clear that deregulation is accelerating the blurring of boundaries between insurance, commercial banking, investment banking and brokerage. At the same time, the worldwide demographics for the financial services industry have never been better. This convergence of competitive change and increasing opportunity make a book like this especially timely - one that carefully analyzes the need for specialized financial services, and the importance of these services to be delivered efficiently with moderate cost. It is increasingly apparent that critical for success in the financial services industry is an innovative, flexible management team who can recognize and act on these fast-moving developments.

Book excerpt: This study analyses the difficulties and problems encountered in transforming the Vietnamese financial sector from one that is subordinate to government objectives and goals to an autonomous sector guided by market forces and competitive pressures. Here, the history of financial sector liberalization is traced and close attention paid to the activities and autonomy of the State Bank of Vietnam, the institution responsible for the supervision and regulation of the financial sector in Vietnam. Overall, the authors argue that ensuring a timely, fair and transparent supervision and regulation of the financial sector is of central importance to financial sector development and stability. Liberalizing financial markets is not solely a question of limiting and/or restricting government influence but may in fact involve the opposite, the influence and power of supervisory and regulatory institutions in many cases needing to be strengthened.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: second class upper division, , course: Accounting, language: English, abstract: The study was guided by analyzing the contribution of commercial banks in economic development of SMEs The target population for the study consisted of registered SMEs in KCBR as their clients.A descriptive research design as well as an explanatory research design was used. The study used Bouchard formula to sample SMEs and then used random sampling to select the 105 SMEs. The respondents of the study were the owners and managers of the SMEs. The study used questionnaires to collect quantitative data using closed ended questions . Data analysis will be done using SPSS statistical software version 21. Descriptive statistics (Frequencies, Means and Standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Correlations and regression) were used in analysis. A multiple linear regression model was used for analysis and all tests were conducted at 5% level of significance. The study findings indicated that banking services are positively related with economic development of SMEs. The study concluded that commercial banks in Nyarugenge district are favorable. The study also concluded commercial bank services are effective and they economic development of SMEs significantly. SMEs in Rwanda suffer from weak financial performance and a high failure rate. Scholars argue that judging by the poor economic development of the informal sector, not much progress seems to have been achieved, despite government efforts to promote SME activity. Some of the key factors attributed to this poor performance is access to financial services. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of commercial banks in economic development of SMEs Normally, SMES play vital and significant contributors to economic development through their critical role in providing job opportunities and reducing poverty levels, an estimated number of up to 40% of the start-ups SMEs fail by year 2 and at least 60% close their doors by year 4. This menace is attributed to poor financial management among small businesses. Accessing credit is a major constraint to the economic development and growth of SMEs and also to poor rural and urban households. This is mainly due to the behavior of lenders in terms of hedging against borrowers’ risks by demanding collateral, which they lack, and also information asymmetry.

This book was released on 2021-05-26 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This note analyzes the implications of changes in commercial real estate (CRE) prices for the stability of the US banking sector. Using detailed bank-level and CRE price data for US metropolitan statistical areas, the analysis shows that, following a decline in CRE prices, banks with greater exposures to CRE loans perform worse than their counterparts, experiencing higher non-performing CRE loans, lower revenues, and lower capital. These effects are particularly pronounced if the drop in CRE prices turns out to be persistent because of possible structural shifts in CRE demand—for example, because of an increased trend toward e-commerce and teleworking—even after the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is over. The impact of a decline in CRE prices is especially true for small and community banks, which tend to have the highest CRE loan exposures. While the US banking sector has remained resilient during the pandemic crisis due to strong capital buffers and massive policy support, these findings suggest that continued vigilance is warranted with regard to potential downside risks to CRE prices amidst ongoing structural shifts in the sector.

Book excerpt: This book is a product of my commitment to developing both theory and practice in political economy. I first became interested in economic and institutional change in the commercial banking industry when I took a seminar on financial insti- tions led by Robert Glauber in the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in the spring of 1995. In my experience, Bob is one of a handful of teachers who has the verve to challenge and inspire both esoteric and practical inquiry: the seminar grappled with practical business and policy problems in a way that posed a significant challenge to existing theories. In addition to dem- strating the need to better integrate theory and practice, it provided a perspective and an approach that I continue to find useful in research, consulting, and teaching. Conducting the research for this study has taught me many things about banking, regulation, and policy making, and I am grateful to a very large number of people for their assistance. Bob Glauber continues to be generous in discussing the ch- lenges of change in the financial services industry.
