Book excerpt: Robert McKelvey argues that John Bunyan wrote The Holy War as a warfare allegory symbolizing the salvation history of Scripture from a Calvinistic-covenantal perspective. In this cosmic drama of redemption, the "Histories That Mansoul, and her Wars Anatomize" include the individual-soteric-microcosmic level or ordo salutis unfolding analogous to the redemptive-historical-macrocosmic level or historia salutis. The eternal covenant of redemption provides the foundation for this history of salvation, which progresses from creation to the anticipation of consummation. This scheme finds its roots in the Puritan philosophy of "universal history" which sees all historical events serving God's redemptive purposes. The individual, through union with Christ founded on election, participates in the drama by inclusion within the trans-historical covenant of grace. As a depiction of cosmic war, The Holy War sets forth the enmity between the church and Antichrist, which is representative of the greater battle between Christ and the devil from Genesis to Revelation. As a pastoral guide to persecuted saints, Bunyan retrospectively rehearses the history of redemption to grant comfort. In addition, he prospectively reveals the consummation of redemption to encourage perseverance and instil eschatological hope. This thesis is substantiated contextually through Bunyan's life and writings, historiographically by surveying the history of Holy War interpretation, pre-textually by examining the introduction to the allegory, and textually by analyzing the allegory itself.

Book excerpt: This study demonstrates that with The Holy War, John Bunyan created a literary masterpiece in the tradition of Psychomania by Prudentius and set the standard by which to judge battle allegories. This analysis reveals the roots of Bunyan's genius in both his theological and literary sensibilities, shaped by Luther and Foxe, and his comprehensive understanding of the biblical plot or master story. This work details biblical foundations and literary devices employed by Bunyan which have remained unnoticed in previous studies, while also engaging themes or motifs of importance to him as a writer and thinker.

Book excerpt: Four years after John Bunyan released his instantly popular journey allegory The Pilgrim's Progress, he published The Holy War--a battle allegory and companion volume. His first book explores salvation of the individual Christian; the second portrays the battle for sanctification. While Christian struggles with questions about assurance of salvation, the collective Mansoul labors with the challenges of being led by and filled with the Holy Spirit. The Pilgrim's Progress focuses on the individual's struggle against sin; The Holy War portrays the Church in a corporate struggle against systemic evil. Bunyan wrote that The Holy War originates in "the same heart, and head, fingers and pen" as The Pilgrim's Progress. Both books present separate dimensions of Bunyan's spiritual journey. Taken together, the journey allegory and the battle allegory capture the full range and depth of the biblical message that consumed Bunyan's imagination. He credits his own salvation to these two things: The grace of God and tenacious, continual, holy warfare. The Holy War is testimony to a spiritual battle he fought, and won. This edition provides annotations that clarify Bunyan's first edition language and message for readers in a post-Puritan world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is John Bunyan's "other" book. Famous for his allegory, Pilgrim's Progress, it is not always realised that Bunyan wrote many other books, including Pilgrim's Progress Part 2, and this - The Holy War. The Holy War concerns the town of Mansoul. The ruler of the town is King Shaddai, and he rules Mansoul with his son, Prince Emmanuel. But the people of the town are besieged and then persuaded to rebellion by the evil prince Diabolus. The book concerns how Emmanuel wins back the town of Mansoul. The book works on three levels. It is an allegory of Genesis 3. It is also an allegory of Mark 12. And it is an account of the salvation of sinners, through the work of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Paul Taylor, the Director of the Mount St Helens Creation Center, has produced this inexpensive paperback edition of this classic novel, which is now in the public domain. This edition contains an introduction and Study Guide, written by Paul Taylor, and the complete text of the novel. Paul is the author of several books, including The Six Days of Genesis, Don't Miss the boat and Where Birds Eat Horses. He and his wife Geraldene have five children. John Bunyan was born near Bedford in 1628. He was saved shortly after the Civil War. His first wife died young. Shortly after his second marriage, Bunyan was arrested and imprisoned for being an unauthorised preacher. He stayed in prison for many years, because he refused to give an undertaking not to preach the Gospel. It was in prison that the ideas for his allegories came to him, and he was able to publish them in the next few years following his eventual release.

Book excerpt: "Nothing can hurt you except sin; nothing can grieve me except sin; nothing can defeat you except sin. Therefore, be on your guard, my Mansoul." ― John Bunyan, The Holy War The allegorical masterpiece that gives valuable counsel on fighting the righteous fight of faith. John Bunyan's (1618-1688) The Holy War Made by King Shaddai Upon Diabolus for the Regaining of the Metropolis of the World or The Losing and Taking Again of the Town of Mansoul (1682), is a extraordinary classic to which the Christian world should accord rediscovered attention. Bunyan's work is not merely a commentary on the Scripture, though it does shine illuminating light on Bible passages and truths. The Holy War in fact displays a refreshing grasp of the breadth and depth of Scripture, and Bunyan not only communicates the Scripture, but he uses the Scripture skillfully. The Holy War is essentially the teaching of the Bible regarding our salvation and subsequent growth in grace. The work truly fits the description C. H. Spurgeon once offered for Bunyan's other superb allegory entitled The Pilgrim's Progress, "Next to the Bible, the book that I value most is John Bunyan's 'Pilgrim's Progress', it is the Bible in another shape." This is Bunyan's great allegory on the progress of the Christian soul and of the history of the Christian church, appearing originally in 1692. This masterpiece will become an instant family heirloom, introducing entire generations to the pilgrims' spiritual journey to truth.

Book excerpt: The Holy War Made by King Shaddai Upon Diabolus, to Regain the Metropolis of the World, Or, The Losing and Taking Again of the Town of Mansoul is a 1682 novel by John Bunyan. This novel, written in the form of an allegory, tells the story of the town "Mansoul" (Man's soul). Though this town is perfect and bears the image of Shaddai (Almighty), it is deceived to rebel and throw off his gracious rule, replacing it instead with the rule of Diabolus. Though Mansoul has rejected the Kingship of Shaddai, he sends his son Emmanuel to reclaim it.
