Book excerpt: In the spirit of Ludolph of Saxony (c. 1295–1378) and Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556), The Fourfold Gospel invites the reader into the mystery of God’s redemption in Jesus Christ. All the parallel passages in the Gospels are glossed together, along with the unique material, using a medieval interpretive approach called the Quadriga or the acronym PaRDeS in Hebrew. Meditating on the literal, canonical, moral, and theological senses of Scripture offers a scaffolding for the spiritual formation of the reader. This volume focuses on the illuminative stage of discipleship, the goal of the parables, along with Jesus’s conflict with enemies and our mission.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All 46 of the original volumes are included in this one volume. There are two linked indexes in this volume, a main index at the front of this volume that will take you to the beginning each of the books of the bible and another index at the beginning of each book there is a linked scripture index leading to the particular subject. John Calvin is considered as the first truly great scholar of the Reformation. Indeed, he has even been seen by some to be one of history’s greatest Christian biblical scholars. He had an incredible command of the Bible, and his interpretations were not based on just one or two passages. He combined pastoral insight with solid exegesis to form a strong interpretation of the scriptures. However, some of his views on the prophetic interpretation, such as in the book of Daniel, are controversial. He put forth a purist view and believed that the prophecies in the book of Daniel applied solely to the history between the time of the prophet Daniel (530 BC) and Jesus’ first coming (30 AD). Nevertheless, John Calvin was a force to be reckoned with, and is considered to have a unique insight which enabled him to find the true meaning of the Bible. Dutch theologian Jacobus Arminius, after whom the anti-Calvinistic movement Arminianism was named, states that, “Next to the study of the Scriptures which I earnestly inculcate, I exhort my pupils to peruse Calvin’s Commentaries, which I extol in loftier terms than Helmich himself (a Dutch divine, 1551–1608); for I affirm that he excels beyond comparison in the interpretation of Scripture, and that his commentaries ought to be more highly valued than all that is handed down to us by the library of the fathers; so that I acknowledge him to have possessed above most others, or rather above all other men, what may be called an eminent spirit of prophecy. His Institutes ought to be studied after the (Heidelberg) Catechism, as containing a fuller explanation, but with discrimination, like the writings of all men.” During his life, Calvin produced commentaries on 48 books of the Bible, a total of 45 published volumes. He intended to put out a complete commentary of the Bible, but his death prevented this. The books of Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, 2 & 3 John, and Revelation were unfortunately not completed. He did, however, write a two volume commentary of the Harmony of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) as well as a separate commentary for the gospel of John. Likewise, he also wrote a two volume series on the Harmony of the Law (Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). Calvin’s own exegesis of the original text allowed him to bring out a unique and pleasing interpretation. He begins each section of scripture with his own translation of the text and then further expounds upon it, point by point, making it an excellent resource for ministers and teachers alike. After more than 400 years, Calvin’s commentaries are still a relevant and essential tool for Christians.

Book excerpt: A highly involved and intriguing look at the book of John, John Calvin interacts with the text in a way that most other commentators of his time have never done. He takes the book of John and reveals its nuances with such ease and intrigue that you cannot help be drawn into the text. He takes comments and notes from other theologians and commentators of his day to give you a clearer picture of the agreements and disputed areas of the John account. Calvin has always been a point of interest to modern theologians and his interpretation of John is a book that should not in any way be ignored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Martin Luther, Martin Chemnitz and Johann Gerhard are often recognized as the two greatest theologians of the Lutheran Church. Both men served as Superintendents (Bishops) of the Lutheran Church, and Chemnitz distinguished himself through his labors as one of the authors of the Formula of Concord and through his numerous erudite private writings, including his Loci Theologici. Gerhard was renowned throughout the Lutheran world from the 17th century down to the present, in part because of his more'academic' works such as the Loci Theologici, but also because of his devotional works, such as the Sacred Meditations and the Daily Exercise of Piety. Only one published work was the fruit of the labors of both Chemnitz and Gerhard: The Harmony of the Four Evangelists. Chemnitz's incomplete work was continued by his successor to the office of Superintendent of Braunschweig, Polycarp Leyser, but its completion awaited the arrival of a theologian equal to the task of finishing such a monumental undertaking. The Harmony, in short, takes the text of all four Gospels and arranges them in chronological order, and then accompanies the complete text with annotations and commentary by Chemnitz, Leyser and Gerhard. Throughout, The Harmony benefits from the authors' encyclopedic knowledge of the writings of the Church Fathers, and their pastoral insights explaining the texts in a way which is extremely beneficial for clergy and laity alike.Book Three, Part Two contains chapters 52 through 70:Chap. 52, the healing of the leper, the episode which immediately followed that discourse on the Law which Christ delivered on the Mount, Mat. 8:1–4.Chap. 53, the account of the centurion in Capernaum who intercedes on behalf of his servant that Christ deliver him from his paralysis, Mat. 8:5–13 and Luke 7:1–10.Chap. 54, the raising of the dead young man, the widow's son, in the city of Nain, Luke 7:11–17.Chap. 55, the account of the Baptist sending from prison his disciples to Christ, Mat. 11:2–6 and Luke 7:18–23.Chap. 56, Christ's sermon to the crows after the disciples of John the Baptist had already departed, Mat. 11:7–30 and Luke 7:24–35.Chap. 57, the conversion and absolution of the sinful woman and of Simon the Pharisee, Luke 7:36–50.Chap. 58, Christ's wandering through cities and villages with the apostles and some women, Luke 8:1–3.Chap. 59, Christ's return from that sojourn to Capernaum to His own home where He casts out the blind and dumb evil spirit, as a result of which a great controversy arises between Him and the scribes, Mat. 12:22–45 and Mark 3:19–30.Chap. 60, Christ's mother and brothers who wish to converse with Him, Mat. 12:46–49, Mark 3:31–34 and Luke 8:19–21.Chap. 61, the “Sermon of Parables” which Christ delivered at the sea from a boat, Mat. 13:1–35, Mark 4:1–34 and Luke 8:4–18.Chap. 62, Christ returning home from the sea, Mat. 13:36–52.Chap. 63, the scribe who offers himself as a disciple and of some other person who wished to first bury his father, Mat. 8:18, Mat. 13:53, Mark 4:35.Chap. 64, Christ's crossing the sea in the land of the Gergesenes, Mat. 8:23–27, Mark 4:36–41 and Luke 8:22–25.Chap. 65, the acts of Christ in the land of the Gergesenes, Mat. 8:38–34, Mark 5:1–20 and Luke 8:26–38.Chap. 66, the return of Christ from His crossing of the sea, of the feast of Matthew and of the debate which the scribes and Johnites stirred at the same place, Mat. 9:1, 10–18, Mark 2:15–22, Mark 5:21, and Luke 5:29–39.Chap. 67, the accounts of the raising of Jairus' daughter and of the healing of the woman with an issue of blood, Mat. 9:18–26, Mark 5:22–43 and Luke 8:41–56. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive biographical annotation about the author and his life Book I. The treatise opens with a short statement on the subject of the authority of the Evangelists, their number, their order, and the different plans of their narratives. Augustine then prepares for the discussion of the questions relating to their harmony, by joining issue in this book with those who raise a difficulty in the circumstance that Christ has left no writing of His own, or who falsely allege that certain books were composed by Him on the arts of magic. He also meets the objections of those who, in opposition to the evangelical teaching, assert that the disciples of Christ at once ascribe more to their Master than He really was, when they affirmed that He was God, and inculcated what they had not been instructed in by Him, when they interdicted the worship of the gods. Against these antagonists he vindicates the teaching of the Apostles, by appealing to the utterances of the Prophets, and by showing that the God of Israel was to be the sole object of worship, who also, although He was the only Deity to whom acceptance was denied in former times by the Romans, and that for the very reason that He prohibited them from worshipping other gods along with Himself, has now in the end made the Empire of Rome subject to His Name, and among all nations has broken their idols in pieces through the preaching of the Gospel, as He had promised by His prophets that the event should be. Book II. In this book Augustine undertakes an orderly examination of the Gospel according to Matthew, on to the narrative of the Supper, and institutes a comparison between it and the other Gospels by Mark, Luke, and John, with the view of demonstrating a complete harmony between the four Evangelists throughout all these sections. Book III. This book contains a demonstration of the harmony of the Evangelists from the accounts of the Supper on to the end of the Gospel, the narratives given by the several writers being collated, and the whole arranged in one orderly connection. Book IV. This book embraces a discussion of those passages which are peculiar to Mark, Luke, or John.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the centuries churches all over the world have confessed their faith in the words of The Apostle's Creed. The Creed is a brilliant summary of the essence of biblical truth. But, as this book shows, the Creed is not just a dry statement of abstract doctrines. It is an expression of passion. As they composed the Creed, the earliest Christians were giving voice to their passion for the God who has made himself known in the person of Jesus Christ. The Creed stands as an invitation to believers of every generation to that same passionate commitment which has marked our predecessors in the faith. This book expounds the Creed phrase by phrase, and seeks at every point to apply its teaching to the life of believers in the world of today. Taking the Creed as his starting point and framework, Jonathan Bayes presents a wide-ranging account of Christian theology. His reflections on the Creed lead to some challenging and stimulating meditations on various aspects of biblical teaching.
