Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the individual gain by observing the Laws of Moses? In a word, completeness. By completeness it is meant, the individual’s spiritual side is awakened, and becomes harmonized with his or her physical self. At the ultimate state of spiritual awakening and harmony, the individual acquires supernatural abilities, all of which are innate, but lie dormant. These supernatural abilities reside with his soul, which is eternal. In addition, observing the Laws of Moses allows the individual’s ancestral spirits to guide him or her. Otherwise, he or she is estranged. ‘Supernatural abilities’ does not only mean the capability to turn water into wine and walk on water as Jesus did, or to strike rock and bring forth water like Moses. It means realizing those abilities that are unique to the individual at a supernatural level. However, the problem with aspiring to supernatural capability through observing the Laws is that the practice has to be absolute and regimented. But here are 613 laws of Moses. An individual may not be able to observe all of them, and he or she may not be able to observe some of them to the letter, or to do so consistently. The extent to which the individual observes the Laws is the extent to which he or she is empowered. Put another way, the closer to perfection in practicing the Laws, the closer to supernatural power. Thus, attaining perfection in accordance with the laws should always be aspired to, as the individual grows spiritually. Returning to the concept of guidance from ancestral spirits: When the apostate is ‘cut off from his people’ the trans-generational bonding is severed. There are several effects of this severance. Individuals whose trans-generational bond is severed do not generally concern themselves with societal issues; with the welfare of the next generation, or the harm done to others by his or her actions. Thus, failure to live in accordance with the Laws of Moses results in overall societal degeneration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is full of law. Yet too often, Christians either pick and choose verses out of context to bolster existing positions, or assume that any moral judgment the Bible expresses should become the law of the land. Law and the Bible asks: What inspired light does the Bible shed on Christians’ participation in contemporary legal systems? It concludes that more often than not the Bible overturns our faulty assumptions and skewed commitments rather than bolsters them. In the process, God gives us greater insight into what all of life, including law, should be. Each chapter is cowritten by a legal professional and a theologian, and focuses on a key aspect of the biblical witness concerning civil or positive law--that is, law that human societies create to order their communities, implementing and enforcing it through civil government. A foundational text for legal professionals, law and prelaw students, and all who want to think in a faithfully Christian way about law and their relationship to it.

Book excerpt: Paul writes that we are justified by faith apart from 'works of the law', a disputed term that represents a fault line between 'old' and 'new' perspectives on Paul. Was the Apostle reacting against the Jews' good works done to earn salvation, or the Mosaic Law's practices that identified the Jewish people? Matthew J. Thomas examines how Paul's second century readers understood these points in conflict, how they relate to 'old' and 'new' perspectives, and what their collective witness suggests about the Apostle's own meaning. Surprisingly, these early witnesses align closely with the 'new' perspective, though their reasoning often differs from both viewpoints. They suggest that Paul opposes these works neither due to moralism, nor primarily for experiential or social reasons, but because the promised new law and covenant, which are transformative and universal in scope, have come in Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Law of Moses: Commentaries on the New and Old Testament Law is a simple yet thought-provoking analysis of the Mosaic legal code found in the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. It carefully analyzes the Old Testament Law as the foundation of the New Testament Gospel, and it places them within the context of parables and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. The Law of Moses is especially useful for those persons who are familiar with the New Testament and the teachings of Christ but who have not yet studied the deeper meanings of the Old Testament Law. This book is also a great Bible-study companion that is practical and useful for knowledgeable and experienced Christians, Muslims, and Jews, including lawyers, pastors, and theologians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvin produced commentaries on most of the books of the Bible. His commentaries cover the larger part of the Old Testament, and all of the new excepting Second and Third John and the Apocalypse. His commentaries and lectures stand in the front rank of Biblical interpretation. Our Author has exerted a powerful influence on all succeeding expositors. They have found their interest in listening to his instructions, and have been more deeply indebted to him than is generally known. Many valuable interpretations of passages of Scripture appeared for the first time in his writings, and have ever since been warmly approved. In other cases, the views which had been previously held are placed by him in so strong a light as to remove every doubt, and satisfy the most cautious inquiry. And yet the stores, from which so much has been drawn, are far from being exhausted, nor is their value greatly lowered by improvements which have been subsequently made. The department of History presents an analogous case. Documents which had been overlooked are carefully examined. Conflicting evidence is more accurately weighed. Important transactions assume a new aspect, or, at least, are altered in their subordinate details. Still, there are historians, in whose narrative the great lines of truth are so powerfully drawn, that the feebler, though more exact, delineations of other men cannot supply their place. In the chief moral requisite for such a work Calvin is excelled by none. He is an honest interpreter. No consideration would have induced him to wrest the words of Scripture from their plain meaning. Those who may question his conclusions cannot trace them to an unworthy motive. Timid theologians will be occasionally startled by his expositions.

This verse-by-verse commentary takes us from the early church in Acts through Paul’s letters, helping us understand more deeply our salvation, God’s call to relationship, and why grace is the cornerstone of our life in Christ. In the book of Acts, Luke portrays the tensions, persecutions, and hopes of the early church. This detailed commentary digs deep into the zeal and joy of Christ’s earliest followers and what these men and women teach us about community in Christ. Once an enemy of Christianity, Paul became a follower of Christ who helped the early church grow in obedience and love. His letters include some of the most beloved words of Scripture, as well as profound challenges to be more like Christ in our words and actions. Be inspired as you learn more about how the early church spread from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth.

Book excerpt: The book of Leviticus has not been a popular subject of study in the modern church. Much like the book of Proverbs, any emphasis upon the practical applications of God's law is readily shunned in pursuit of more "spiritual" studies. Books like Leviticus are considered dull, overbearing, and irrelevant. To be spiritual, in the modern sense of the term, means to live on a "higher" level where today's Christian is governed more by the impressions of the heart than a carnal commandment. But man was created in God's image and is duty-bound to develop the implications of that image by obedience to God's law. In this volume, the author writes, "Man cannot develop his personhood except in terms of God and His law-word. Even as God separated man from the dust of the earth to make him a living soul (Gen. 2:7), so God summons covenant man in Leviticus to separate himself to the Covenant Lord and to become holy even as God Himself is holy. The law or justice of God is the way of holiness." The book of Leviticus contains over ninety references to the word holy. The purpose, therefore, of this third book of the Pentateuch is to demonstrate the legal foundation of holiness in the totality of our lives. In the book of Zechariah, the prophet proclaims a day when "there shall be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS TO THE LORD" (Zech. 14:20). This same inscription is borne upon the garments of the high priest, and pictures for us a day in which every area of life shall be made holy to the Lord. This present study is dedicated to equipping His church for that redemptive mission.

Book excerpt: How does the Old Testament Law fits into the arc of the Bible, and how it relevant to the church today? Exploring how God intended the Law to work in its original context as well as the New Testament perspective on the Law, Richard Averbeck argues that the whole Law applies to Christians—our task is to discern how it applies in the light of Christ.
