Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, Nigeria's voters cast out the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). Here, A. Carl LeVan traces the political vulnerability of Africa's largest party in the face of elite bargains that facilitated a democratic transition in 1999. These 'pacts' enabled electoral competition but ultimately undermined the party's coherence. LeVan also crucially examines the four critical barriers to Nigeria's democratic consolidation: the terrorism of Boko Haram in the northeast, threats of Igbo secession in the southeast, lingering ethnic resentments and rebellions in the Niger Delta, and farmer-pastoralist conflicts. While the PDP unsuccessfully stoked fears about the opposition's ability to stop Boko Haram's terrorism, the opposition built a winning electoral coalition on economic growth, anti-corruption, and electoral integrity. Drawing on extensive interviews with a number of politicians and generals and civilians and voters, he argues that electoral accountability is essential but insufficient for resolving the representational, distributional, and cultural components of these challenges.

Book excerpt: Democracy in Nigeria - Thoughts and Selected Commentaries consists of a series of essays which address a variety of issues bordering on good governance and the stability of the Nigerian state. While the author is optimistic about the future of his nation and proposes measures that can drive its democracy forward, he is unhappy that corruption, in particular, has impeded progress in an otherwise vibrant nation. He believes that proper education and a realistic federal arrangement provide the solution to religious intolerance and all the ills that are associated with it, while a more proactive population can actually tame the monster of corruption if they are genuinely worried that corruption has been responsible for their individual and collective plights.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of Alfred Obiora Uzokwes critical commentaries about Nigerias triumphs, woes and the way forward. It brings his writings into one volume as a reference material for those conducting research about the country. It will also serve as another tool for Nigerias policy makers in their everyday quest for better decision-making. The subjects of the commentaries are diverse, including politics, aviation, infrastructure, health, welfare and economy. Nigerians are resilient and ingenious but the country continues to flounder, plagued by poor transportation infrastructure, corruption, unemployment, inflation, insecurity and poor standard of education. The problems of Africas most populous nation can be traced to rudderless and selfish leaders that have continued to preside over a unidimensional economy. With plummeting oil prices, the nation is now in dire straits more than ever before. Yearning for a change in leadership and direction, Nigerians recently voted in a new government at the center, headed by a former military leader who has vowed to institute change. The world is keenly watching to see if the soldier-turned politician would make a positive difference. In spite of the difficulties of the present time, Nigeria still has the potential of becoming a great economy. Social media where citizens freely vent their thoughts about their leadership is slowly gaining the attention of leaders. Furthermore, the sometimes scathing commentaries about Nigerias leaders by the media and commentators like Alfred Obiora Uzokwe, can no longer be ignored by the leaders because of their reach in this internet age. Nigerian leaders are slowly being forced to listen to and pay heed to the yearnings and aspirations of the masses and that is a step in the right direction.

So also is the letter of James necessary but neglected. Yet there is perhaps no biblical text that speaks to the life situation in Africa in the twenty-first century more directly than the book of James. An African Commentary on the Letter of James is an attempt to hear the message of James's letter from a non-Western social and cultural setting. It seeks to demonstrate how one's worldview, language, culture, economic status, and religion make a significant difference in appropriating the message of the biblical text. The commentary explores how the written word impacts the readers in a predominantly oral culture. It attempts to hear what James is saying from a different context but, in doing so, explains James with a different "voice." Like the letter of James itself, the commentary uses pithy sayings, proverbs, and aphorisms to explain the meaning of the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of my articles written as freelance columnist and published in Nigeria's national newspapers between 1985 and 1995. My article , "The proper meaning of underdevelopment," attracted several published comments from readers. This type of public reaction, a reaction that continued even with regard to subsequent newspaper articles, gave me unqualified fulfillment. I suddenly found a niche, a forum where I could take on policies and actions of government in the full glare of the public, without being branded a rabble rouser by the authorities. At least this was my reasoning until 1995. After the June 12, 1994 Presidential elections, annulled by General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, my freelance newspaper contributions assumed a different tone. Between 1994 and 1995, my freelance newspaper articles were becoming a source of worry for my family. Late General Sanni Abacha had embarked on total annihilation of the opposition. My immediate and extended families were not so sure whether or not it was safe to continue writing in the vein that I was. Their concern was probably not misplaced since I had called for, in one of my articles, for the political break-up of Nigeria. I thus became one of the earliest writers to publicly called for the political redefinition of Nigeria as a political entity. Virtually all the articles contained in this collection were the result of government action or inaction. Topics ranged from poverty to the arbitrary creation of local government units to the futility of military incursion into politics. This book captures a very important portion of Nigeria's political and social history. As a book of articles and therefore socio-political commentaries, it is useful. Issues discussed in these articles are still as relevant today as they were when they were first published. The issue of the political future of Nigeria as a nation, the relationship between the center and the constituent parts, the problem of poverty and many more continue to dominate national political discourse even today. This book therefore cuts into contemporary Nigeria political issues albeit form the narrative of yesteryears. The fact that those issues on the front burner in the eighties and nineties still do even today, is a testimony to the unyielding nature of the country's political climate. Those significant and nutty sociopolitical issues raised by these articles are yet to be addressed and resolved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria, the United States’ most important strategic partner in West Africa, is in grave trouble. While Nigerians often claim they are masters of dancing on the brink without falling off, the disastrous administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, the radical Islamic insurrection Boko Haram, and escalating violence in the delta and the north may finally provide the impetus that pushes it into the abyss of state failure. In this thoroughly updated edition, John Campbellexplores Nigeria’s post-colonial history and presents a nuanced explanation of the events and conditions that have carried this complex, dynamic, and very troubled giant to the edge. Central to his analysis are the oil wealth, endemic corruption, and elite competition that have undermined Nigeria’s nascent democratic institutions and alienated an increasingly impoverished population. However, state failure is not inevitable, nor is it in the interest of the United States. Campbell provides concrete new policy options that would not only allow the United States to help Nigeria avoid state failure but also to play a positive role in Nigeria’s political, social, and economic development.

Book excerpt: Issues of homosexuality are the subject of public and political controversy in many African societies today. Frequently, these controversies receive widespread attention both locally and globally, such as with the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda. In the international media, these cases tend to be presented as revealing a deeply-rooted homophobia in Africa fuelled by religious and cultural traditions. But so far little energy is expended in understanding these controversies in all their complexity and the critical role religion plays in them. Complementing the companion volume, Public Religion and the Politics of Homosexuality in Africa, this book investigates Christian politics and discourses on homosexuality in sub-Saharan Africa. The contributors present case studies from various African countries, from Nigeria to South Africa and from Cameroon to Uganda, focusing on Pentecostal, Catholic and mainline Protestant churches. They critically examine popular Christian theologies that perpetuate homophobia and discrimination, but they also discuss contestations of such discourses and emerging alternative Christian perspectives that contribute to the recognition of sexual diversity, social justice and human rights in contemporary Africa.
