Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life will be rudely interrupted by death. There's no way around that truth; no one is immune from death. Christians, though comforted by the promise of the resurrection, still are vulnerable to the emotional and physical effects that come with grief. Those dealing with grief often just need permission to grieve, yet retain hope and comfort for the future. Often, they just want someone to hear their voice. Author Kristian Kincaid, a pastor for more than 30 years who has counseled countless griving people and who has experienced the grief of losing his sister on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11, understands and will listen. He takes readers on a journey that acknowledges that pain is real and is hard, and that struggle can last years, but also that grievers do not grieve along and that there is hope: that Jesus lives and death has died.

Download or read book Braving Sorrow Together written by Ashleigh Slater and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Little did I know at the time that I’d one day look back and remember it as the beginning of what I call our ‘weeping years.’” — Ashleigh Slater We all have “weeping years,” seasons where the trials seem to come one after another. For Ashleigh and her husband, their weeping years included miscarriage, multiple job losses, feelings of betrayal, panic attacks, anti-depressants, cross-country moves, and even suicidal thoughts. Loss is a constant of life, but the intensity of those years changed Ashleigh, altering how she understood and responded to grief. This book tells her story. Braving Sorrow Together: The Transformative Power of Faith and Community When Life is Hard explores loss and trial in a conversational, storytelling manner. It gently encourages those experiencing grief of any kind to seek comfort in God and in the “me too” of community. Ashleigh gives an honest and vulnerable account of her personal stories of loss, as well as those of her friends, with reflections from literature and Scripture sprinkled throughout. She examines the nature of grief and loss in several universal arenas, such as relationships, health, career, and the home. Anyone who ever struggles (and that’s all of us) will be able to move through trial with more wisdom, releasing anxiety and receiving the help and comfort God so bountifully provides. Readers of Braving Sorrow Together will be encouraged that they are not alone, inspired to reach out to close friends, and reminded that God—the Author of all of our stories— can be trusted through the tears. Includes an appendix with further reflections on leaning into community in difficult seasons.
Book Synopsis Comfort: A Journey Through Grief by : Ann Hood
Download or read book Comfort: A Journey Through Grief written by Ann Hood and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-05-04 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Rarely do memoirs of grief combine anguish, love, and fury with such elegance.” — Entertainment Weekly In 2002, Ann Hood’s five-year-old daughter Grace died suddenly from a virulent form of strep throat. Stunned and devastated, the family searched for comfort in a time when none seemed possible. Hood—an accomplished novelist—was unable to read or write. She could only reflect on her lost daughter—“the way she looked splashing in the bathtub ... the way we sang ‘Eight Days a Week.’” One day, a friend suggested she learn to knit. Knitting soothed her and gave her something to do. Eventually, she began to read and write again. A semblance of normalcy returned, but grief, in ever new and different forms, still held the family. What they could not know was that comfort would come, and in surprising ways. Hood traces her descent into grief and reveals how she found comfort and hope again—a journey to recovery that culminates with a newly adopted daughter.

Book Synopsis Sorrow and Consolation in Italian Humanism by : George W. McClure
Download or read book Sorrow and Consolation in Italian Humanism written by George W. McClure and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George McClure offers here a far-reaching analysis of the role of consolation in Italian Renaissance culture, showing how the humanists' interest in despair, and their effort to open up this realm in both social and personal terms, signaled a shift toward a heightened secularization in European thought. Analyzing works by fourteenth-and fifteenth-century writers, from Petrarch to Marsilio Ficino, McClure examines the treatment of such problems as bereavement, fear of death, illness, despair, and misfortune. These writers, who evinced a belief in the legitimacy of secular sadness, tried to forge a wisdom that in their view dealt more realistically with the art of living and dying than did the disputations of scholastic philosophy and theology. Arguing that consolatory concerns helped spur the revival of classical schools of psychological thought, McClure reveals that the humanists sought comfort from once-neglected troves of Stoic, Peripatetic, Epicurean, Platonic, and Christian thought. He contends that the humanists' pursuit of solace and their duty as consolers provided not only a forum but perhaps also an incentive for the articulation of prominent Renaissance themes concerning immortality, the dignity of man, and the sanctity of worldly endeavor.
