Book excerpt: While in captivity by Palestinian terrorists, Antoine began hearing what he described as a loving, caring voice that showed him to rise above his terrible pain and misery by connecting to his creator’s spirit. The voice also told him, among other things, that he would meet an unusual woman who would share in his spiritual journey. He did not know that the woman would also experience the very same kind of intuitive lessons from the voice as he did. Inspired by the loving spirit of the voice that speaks through both of them, Antoine and Liliana now share that message with the world. Their journey takes them from the horrible imprisonment by cruel terrorists, through the anxieties we all face in everyday life, into an ongoing journey toward spiritual liberation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education is a primary route to rewarding employment and economic security. It is particularly significant for the future prospects of children who are ethnic minorities, were born into disadvantaged economic circumstances, or are dealing with language barriers. For nearly a decade Julio Cammarota interviewed and observed Latino youth between the ages of seventeen and twenty-four who lived in a barrio in a city on the California coast. He conducted forty life interviews, selecting six people to investigate in depth. Twenty of the study participants worked at a fast-food restaurant, while the other twenty worked at a community cultural center. Focusing on the experiences of his subjects in the primary settings of family, work, and school, Cammarota structured his research to examine how Latino youth negotiate myriad social conditions and hostile economic and political pressures in their daily lives. His extensive interviews and incisive analyses illuminate the complex relationships among low-wage employment, cultural standards, education, class oppression, and gender expectations. Among other topics, Cammarota investigates how working affects Latino education; how gender influences social relationships and life choices; how Latinos and Latinas try to maintain their distinct ethnic identity while attempting to transcend marginalization; whether the Latino culture helps young people work hard for their families and for a better future; and how the connections and disconnections among work, family, and school constitute formative processes that shape the cultural identities of Latino youth. One of the most extensive studies of barrio youth available, Sueños Americanos concludes with a discussion of social justice education for Latino youth and how this educational approach meets their academic needs while providing opportunities for self-determination and community activism.

A born searing sensual leader possessing brute strength, and an imposing command, Lachlan is unprepared for the beautiful spitfire Flora MacLeod, who jeopardizes his plans to save his clan, and digs beneath his hard, chiseled exterior to expose a tenderness that may be his undoing. The greatest marriage prize in the Highlands, Flora is determined at all costs to avoid her mother’s fate of being bartered away as a political pawn. Vowing to make her captor pay for his ruthlessness, she boldly engages him in a battle of wills, sweetening the challenge with dangerous passion–even as the lingering curse and deadly ghosts of a past tragedy reach out to thwart a tender love that has yet to be spoken.

They point to an important element in all of Giussani's work - his proposal that the Christian Event is the answer to the deepest and most pressing questions in today's world. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This work combines a scholar's research and a Christian's interpretations with popular history's readability. It is a definitive source book on the history of ancient Israel from the Exodus to the Fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. Bruce does not deal with Israel as an isolated unit. Rather, he deals with Israel from the standpoint of its historical interaction with its almost forgotten neighbors. The detailed genealogical and chronological tables which add so much to the value of this book were compiled by the author himself after intensive research.

Book excerpt: Harper aims to provide readers with a deeper, more accurate understanding of Falla's creative process by drawing from a complete array of rare, authentic sources including Falla's own personal library, valuable sketch material, and the more than 20,000 pieces of correspondence maintained in Granada, Spain by the Manuel de Falla Archive. The book is arranged in three sections. The first part of the book, organized according to Falla's geographical stays, attempts to clarify certain aspects of Falla's life that have to date been ambiguous or unknown. The second section engages various prominent aspects of Falla's character, such as his relationship with his European contemporaries. In this second section, significant collaborations with prestigious Falla specialists - Louis Jambou, Michael Christofordis, and Chris Collins - have greatly enhanced the dimension of the topics addressed. The book's final section attempts to introduce readers to the most recent information available. It is generously illustrated with manuscript examples and is organized according to the stylistic classifications of the Manuel de Falla Archive's Musical Director, which greatly assist in clarifying the development of Falla's creative process. A chronologically-arranged photo section rounds out this offering that will be of great significance to music students and teachers, as well as those with an interest in Spanish culture.
