Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approach to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius As more and more people begin to reclaim their spiritual heritage, longoverlooked traditions resurface, offering seekers new ways to rekindle their spiritual selves. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola is such a tradition, and its recovery in the church has sparked the interest of many believers—religious and laypeople alike. In light of this resurgence, Fr. William A. Barry, a director of the Spiritual Exercises for more than thirty years, offers Letting God Come Close, a guide that shows spiritual directors how to effectively and creatively help individuals meet the living God through the Exercises. Using clear, down-to-earth examples from his own experience, Fr. Barry hopes to instill in the director the trust, confidence, and skills needed to help retreatants approach God. “Spiritual directors will find a gold mine here of help in understanding and giving the Exercises.” —George Aschenbrenner, S.J., director, Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth “For over thirty years Barry has listened attentively for the ways God deals directly with God’s people through the Spiritual Exercises. God’s voice comes through and Barry helps directors pay attention.” —George R. Murphy, S.J., adjunct lecturer in spirituality at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley

Book excerpt: From debut author Lindsey Frazier comes a raw and honest memoir about identity, overcoming trauma, and the sheer beauty that can be found in life if we open ourselves up to love. “I can’t do this anymore,” Lindsey Frazier says to her husband, moments after throwing her wedding ring across the room. It’s here that her memoir Oh Love, Come Close begins, just one week after her wedding day. Volatile, unpredictable, and emotionally charged, Frazier finds that the primary emotion she’s experiencing during the so-called honeymoon phase of marriage isn’t happiness or joy—it’s loss. She can’t shake the feeling that a part of her died the day she got married. When she finally faces her past, she discovers pieces of herself—of her own identity—that she never previously dared to acknowledge. After her husband’s desperate pleas, she agrees to seek the help needed to navigate the murky waters that lie ahead, not just to save her marriage but to save herself. In doing so, she uncovers deep fears and unhealed traumas, the grief and losses that caused her to flee her hometown and distance herself from it all. Oh Love, Come Close explores the emotional wounds that fragmented a woman’s identity, and the retracing of steps needed to pick up the pieces left behind—her sexuality, spirituality, fidelity, and a complicated past. Frazier unearths her buried wounds and finds that in order to fully live, to fully love and be loved, she has to reclaim all the pieces of herself, no matter how painful they might be. This searing memoir is at once vivid and dreamlike, and Frazier’s arresting prose will draw readers deeply into this intimate narrative.

This thesis focuses on how different forms of proximity affect a firm's ability to access such knowledge. We consider the influence of being co-located in space, of being embedded in a network, and of being active in similar knowledge domains. By integrating these three proximity perspectives, we contribute to various disciplines such as economic geography, organizational sociology and innovation studies. Further, we investigate the make, buy or ally strategies that pharmaceutical firms employ to maximize the probability of innovation (finding new drugs). Our findings suggest that firms employ multiple governance structures simultaneously, even when targeting similar innovations. These insights contribute to our understanding of the boundaries of the firm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the autumn of 1831, some easter from the Poltava province issued a book under the tantalizing title "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka". The simple-hearted villager, as if in a frightened way, recommended to the enlightened public four fantastic stories allegedly told at gatherings in his modest hut. "This is real gaiety, sincere, unconstrained, without cheating, without being stiff. In some places, what poetry! What sensitivity!"--So welcomed the new book Pushkin. He knew that, under the mask of an old farmer, a twenty-two-year-old writer is hiding, happily inventing and colorful characters (daring dudes, dazzling marvels, stubborn old men, angry women, mermaids, witches, devils - in a word, all sorts of people and nonhumans), and funny storytellers, and the collector himself invariably "truthful" nonsense - Rudy Pank. Nowadays the name of the writer "Evenings ..." is known to all, in 1831, very few knew him. But among them were two great poets - Zhukovsky ..." --Vasha Kniga

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Come join me as I take you back to Charleston, South Carolina, to my father's forge in the early 1800's. Sit with me on the woodpile as he tells a tale of faith, hope, or love." In this extraordinary collection, Charlotte Jefferies and her father Price, a former slave, introduce us to twelve best loved Bible tales, from Genesis to Daniel, and reveal their significance in the lives of African Americans--and indeed of all oppressed peoples. When Charlotte wants to understand the cruel injustices of her time, she turns to her father. Does the powerful slaveholder, Mr. Sam Riley, who seems to own all that surrounds them, also own the sun and moon? she wonders. Price's answer is to tell the story of Creation. How can God allow an evil like slavery to exist? she asks. Price responds by telling the story of the Hebrews' Exodus -- and shows Charlotte that someday their people, too, will be free. With exquisite clarity, Patricia and Fredrick McKissack and James Ransome -- a Newbery Honor winner and all Coretta Scott King Award winners -- brilliantly illuminate the parallels between the stories of the Jews and African-American history. Let My People Go is a triumphant celebration of both the human spirit and the enduring power of story as a source of strength. Our hope is that this book will be like a lighthouse that can guide young readers through good times and bad....The ideas that these ancient stories hold are not for one people, at one time, in one place. They are for all of us, for all times, everywhere. --from the Authors' Note to Let My People Go
