Book Synopsis Mixed-Member Electoral Systems in Constitutional Context by : Nathan F. Batto
Download or read book Mixed-Member Electoral Systems in Constitutional Context written by Nathan F. Batto and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reformers have promoted mixed-member electoral systems as the “best of both worlds.” In this volume, internationally recognized political scientists evaluate the ways in which the introduction of a mixed-member electoral system affects the configuration of political parties. The contributors examine several political phenomena, including cabinet post allocation, nominations, preelectoral coalitions, split-ticket voting, and the size of party systems and faction systems. Significantly, they also consider various ways in which the constitutional system—especially whether the head of government is elected directly or indirectly—can modify the incentives created by the electoral system. The findings presented here demonstrate that the success of electoral reform depends not only on the specification of new electoral rules per se but also on the political context—and especially the constitutional framework—within which such rules are embedded.

Book Synopsis Terrorism Documents of International and Local Control: Volume 89 by : Douglas C Lovelace Jr
Download or read book Terrorism Documents of International and Local Control: Volume 89 written by Douglas C Lovelace Jr and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-04 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorism: Documents of International and Local Control is a hardbound series that provides primary-source documents on the worldwide counter-terrorism effort. Chief among the documents collected are transcripts of Congressional testimony, reports by such federal government bodies as the Congressional Research Service and the Government Accountability Office, and case law covering issues related to terrorism. Most volumes carry a single theme, and inside each volume the documents appear within topic-based categories. The series also includes a subject index and other indices that guide the user through this complex area of the law. Europe's Approach to Terrorism introduces Terrorism researchers to the realm of European Union security law. With an ever-expanding immigrant population and a rising Islamic presence within Europe, the EU's quickly developing security law demands the kind of topically organized document collection that Europe's Approach to Terrorism constitutes. A key feature of this volume is the section devoted to case law from the European Court of Justice, which has addressed the delicate legal issue of defining and categorizing philanthropic organizations as terrorist-supporting groups. This volume also features the text of European Parliament measures that regulate the flow of money to terrorist groups. Given the prominence of these questions in non-European countries as well, this volume will serve as a unique research tool for scholars and policymakers around the world.

Download or read book The Political Economy of Maritime Safety written by Ketil Djønne and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers unique insight into the public and private governance of international shipping from the 1970s through to the 2010s. Focusing on the part played by maritime classification societies, it highlights the role played by the European Union during this time and its influence in creating transnational maritime regulations. The emergence of the Treaty of Rome and the European Parliament in enabling market liberalisation within the shipping industry on the one hand and more stringent maritime safety regulation on the other is examined, alongside the common transport policy and enforcement of international maritime rules. Particularly attention is given to the growth of the European Union’s maritime presence, the establishment of the European Maritime Safety Agency, developments in flag state implementation, and relations between the International Maritime Organization and the European Union. This book presents a detailed guide to the European Union’s role as a maritime safety regulator and the impact this has had on the shipping industry and its governance structure. It will be relevant to researchers and policymakers interested in maritime and transport economics as well as to students of European affairs and of international relations.

Book Synopsis The Mixed Member Proportional System: Providing Greater Representation for Women? by : Tracy-Ann Johnson-Myers
Download or read book The Mixed Member Proportional System: Providing Greater Representation for Women? written by Tracy-Ann Johnson-Myers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief discusses the adoption of the mixed member proportional (MMP) electoral system in New Zealand and its subsequent effect on representation for women. Concerns about the homogeneity of the legislature under the Single Member Plurality electoral system and the need for increased representativeness and greater proportionality of party preference lead to the changeover in 1996. The book addresses the question of whether an increase in descriptive representation for women in New Zealand’s House of Representatives has translated to policy outcomes that are beneficial to them. It also examines the extent to which female MPs meet the expectation that they will act for members of their groups; pushing minority and gender-friendly legislation and policies into the political arena. Finally, it raises questions about where women are found in New Zealand’s decision making bodies and what influence they might have on policy outcomes. The first book to examine the effects of the MMP system on female descriptive and substantive representation using a case study analysis, this Brief adds to the literature on electoral systems and women’s political representation. This book will be of use to political science students at both the undergraduate and graduate level, particularly those interested in electoral studies, political institutions, politics and gender, and minority representation.
