Book excerpt: Patrick Thibeault has served in the US Army in various capacities since the 1990s, originally training as a Airborne soldier before specialising as a combat medic. My Journey as a Combat Medic covers his original training and deployment before providing a look at the roles he's since played in the US Army's forces, including his recent deployment to Afghanistan. It is a no-holds bar look at the modern medic in the US Army, allowing us a glimpse at the training as a soldier and as a specialist, as well as deployment and front line duties and the impact of service on civilian life, including an honest look at PTSD, from the author's own personal experience. Rather than a technical manual, My Journey as a Combat Medic is a detailed first hand account, concluding with a letter to new medics, providing a career's worth of advice and knowledge as they begin their journeys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doc Thibeault is a retired combat medic with deployments to Desert Storm in 1990 and Afghanistan during Enduring Freedom. This book is the celebration of the combat medic. The author’s experiences as a combat medic during Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and fifteen years later during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan certainly qualify him to tell the story of the combat medic, and he feels that the story of the modern-day combat medic is not being told. Patrick writes about growing up as an Army brat and about dealing with posttraumatic stress disorder. Looking back, he remembered those old seasoned medics that he would look to for advice and inspiration. Enough stories and documentaries have been written about the surgeons in combat hospitals. A true story needs to be told about the medics who took care of the wounded first.

Book excerpt: “Here in Combat Medic we see a bright and talented young physician transformed into a front line battlefield medic in the greatest battle of WWII, the Normandy Invasion. In this personal reflection, his heart and courage are played out with genuine humanity.” —Dianne Feinstein, United States Senator “It is with great pleasure that I learned through the office of the President of the French Republic of your nomination to the rank of Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor.” —Guy Wildenstein, President, the American Society of the French Legion of Honor “Dr. Kerner is a physician’s physician...the history of a gifted scholar, teacher, administrator, and most important of all, doctor.” —The Honorable Barbara Boxer, United States Senator “Combat Medic is a page turner... It is a miracle that I have this manuscript to read, that you lived to write it.” —Professor Barth Marshall, USF, Fromm Institute A decorated medical officer’s harrowing and insightful portrait of war on the battlefield from northern France to Germany. More than fifty years after the carnage at Normandy, Dr. John Kerner draws from his wartime journals and letters home to present a candid and insightful portrait of war. Medical units under his charge pushed through western Europe, improving on the treatment and transportation of the wounded during some of the most brutal fighting of the war. Amidst the mud and blood of combat, this decorated medical officer shares a time and place when living beyond each day was in serious question. Kerner’s account includes some of the greatest moments of World War II: the dramatic breakout of the Normandy hedgerow country, the thrilling dash across France in 1944, and the exhilarating seige of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Kerner’s achievement of saving lives, often with improvised methods and shells flying overhead, is a gripping account of man’s noble humanity in the midst of horrifying inhumanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain Troops And Medics is a complete World War II Combat History of the U.S. Tenth Mountain Division written by Albert H. Meinke, Jr., M.D., who served as one of its front line infantry battalion surgeons during all of the division's combat in 1944-45. It unfolds as a series of interesting, true personal stories, presented in chronological order, which makes the history easy to read and to digest. The Tenth Mountain Division was a very special Army division made up of carefully selected skiers, mountaineers, and experienced outdoorsmen. Known as the "SKI TROOPS," these men trained long and hard to fight on skis and snowshoes, and to survive in below zero temperatures in mountainous terrain so hostile to military maneuvering that it was necessary to use pack mules to transport supplies, ammunition and equipment. During the winter of 1944-45 this division entered the military stalemate in the Apennine Mountains in Northern Italy, and on its first offensive cracked the German defenses to take Riva Ridge and the key mountain peaks, Monte Belvedere, Monte Gorgolesco and Monte della Torraccia. It was the first Allied division to break into the Po Valley, and first to reach and cross the wide Po River, using hastily obtained, hand-paddled assault boats. It then continued its rapid advance, as the vanguard of the Allied Armies in Italy, until it reached the Austrian border. The author not only served with the first of this division's combat troops to leave the continental United States and participated in all of the Division's major battles, but also served in every one of its special task forces deep behind enemy lines. Most of the time he was well informed about local military strategies and Division objectives. Drama, excitement, tragedy and humor are included in these stories of preparations for combat, unusual fighting conditions, care of wounded soldiers at the front, and wartime conditions in Italy. Written in non-technical language, the book is easy to read, and fulfills the requirements for an outstanding and unusual gift, especially to all World War II participants, history and military buffs, mountaineers, ski enthusiasts, and almost everyone connected with the field of medicine.
