Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to develop a suitable framework for the analysis of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) case law, it is first analysed what significance, if any, the concept of 'sovereignty' has in the contemporary supranational environment of the European Union. All too often, tax scholars equate 'sovereignty' with the concepts of 'competence' or 'jurisdiction'. It will be established in this thesis that a much more specific and higher-level meaning is to be attributed to the 'sovereignty' concept, which goes beyond the strictly legal concepts of 'competence' or 'jurisdiction'. The cornerstone of this thesis, however, is an extensive analysis of the case law of the ECJ in direct tax matters, including a comparison with its non-tax case law. A new kind of methodology is used in discussing the cases: they are categorized according to whether a discrimination - or a restriction - based analysis was applied by the ECJ.

Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper and Statistical Appendix highlights that the real GDP growth in Latvia accelerated in the second half of 1997, and is estimated at 6 percent for the year. Growth was broad-based, with particularly strong performance in the services sector and construction, and has been led by increased investment, with real capital formation rising by an estimated 10 percent, and enhanced efficiency. Reflecting the strong economic growth, official unemployment has begun to decline, falling from 71⁄2 percent in mid-year to 6.7 percent at end-January 1998.

Have their economies overcome the problems of transition? The answers to these questions and their implications for policy are provided in this collection of analyses. Rather than a country-by-country description, the volume provides a cross-country perspective of developments from 1994 through mid-1997. The seven sections of this paper discuss recent macroeconomic and structural policies, exchange rate regimes, fiscal issues, financial systems, private sector development, and accession to the European Union.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As social security systems can be based on contributions as well as on taxes, it is of international interest to investigate the relation between double tax conventions and social security conventions. This book points out similarities as well as differences between these two types of conventions. 18 National Reports from nearly all EU countries as well as Israel, New Zealand, Russia and the USA on this topic are compiled and published in this volume. The National Reports partly focus on the comparison of certain types of provisions contained in such conventions, for example anti-discrimination clauses or the provisions concerning migrant workers. Moreover, multilateral conventions as well as EC law and the jurisdiction of the ECJ are the basis of this book. Additionaly, experts in this field have volunteered contributions dealing with specific problems of tax treaties and social security conventions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addresses a critical analysis of major media policies in the European Union and Council of Europe at the period of profound changes affecting both media environments and use, as well as the logic of media policy-making and reconfiguration of traditional regulatory models. The analytical problem-related approach seems to better reflect a media policy process as an interrelated part of European integration, formation of European citizenship, and exercise of communication rights within the European communicative space. The question of normative expectations is to be compared in this case with media policy rationales, mechanisms of implementation (transposing rules from EU to national levels), and outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a description of the state of the art on environmental disclosure, illustrating the key theoretical issues, the regulatory frameworks, the main standards developed and reporting the results of an empirical analysis on the environmental disclosure released by listed firms. Luigi Lepore and Sabrina Pisano begin by analysing the origin and evolution of environmental disclosure. They go on to provide a description of the main theoretical frameworks used by scholars, explaining the conceptual basis of each theory and describing how the specific theory has been used to explain the company’s decision to release environmental disclosure. The second part of the book highlights the role and evolution of the European regulatory frameworks, emphasizing the transition from voluntary to mandatory disclosure. The book ends by providing a picture of the evolution of sustainability reporting practices in European Union nations over the past two decades. This book investigates the critical issues and new directions in environmental disclosure, which are currently under examination by regulators and standard setters. It will therefore be of great interest to academics and students working in the areas of business and sustainability.
