Book Synopsis Nonextensive Entropy by : Murray Gell-Mann
Download or read book Nonextensive Entropy written by Murray Gell-Mann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-15 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great variety of complex phenomena in many scientific fields exhibit power-law behavior, reflecting a hierarchical or fractal structure. Many of these phenomena seem to be susceptible to description using approaches drawn from thermodynamics or statistical mechanics, particularly approaches involving the maximization of entropy and of Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics and standard laws in a natural way. The book addresses the interdisciplinary applications of these ideas, and also on various phenomena that could possibly be quantitatively describable in terms of these ideas.

Book Synopsis Lattice Gas Hydrodynamics by : J.-P. Rivet
Download or read book Lattice Gas Hydrodynamics written by J.-P. Rivet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lattice gas hydrodynamics describes the approach to fluid dynamics using a micro-world constructed as an automaton universe, where the microscopic dynamics is based not on a description of interacting particles, but on the laws of symmetry and invariance of macroscopic physics. We imagine point-like particles residing on a regular lattice, where they move from node to node and undergo collisions when their trajectories meet. If the collisions occur according to some simple logical rules, and if the lattice has the proper symmetry, then the automaton shows global behavior very similar to that of real fluids. This book carries two important messages. First, it shows how an automaton universe with simple microscopic dynamics--the lattice gas--can exhibit macroscopic behavior in accordance with the phenomenological laws of classical physics. Second, it demonstrates that lattice gases have spontaneous microscopic fluctuations that capture the essentials of actual fluctuations in real fluids.
Book Synopsis Theory of Financial Risk and Derivative Pricing by : Jean-Philippe Bouchaud
Download or read book Theory of Financial Risk and Derivative Pricing written by Jean-Philippe Bouchaud and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-12-11 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk control and derivative pricing have become of major concern to financial institutions, and there is a real need for adequate statistical tools to measure and anticipate the amplitude of the potential moves of the financial markets. Summarising theoretical developments in the field, this 2003 second edition has been substantially expanded. Additional chapters now cover stochastic processes, Monte-Carlo methods, Black-Scholes theory, the theory of the yield curve, and Minority Game. There are discussions on aspects of data analysis, financial products, non-linear correlations, and herding, feedback and agent based models. This book has become a classic reference for graduate students and researchers working in econophysics and mathematical finance, and for quantitative analysts working on risk management, derivative pricing and quantitative trading strategies.

Book Synopsis Affective Health and Masculinities in South Africa by : Hans Reihling
Download or read book Affective Health and Masculinities in South Africa written by Hans Reihling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Affective Health and Masculinities in South Africa explores how different masculinities modulate substance use, interpersonal violence, suicidality, and AIDS as well as recovery cross-culturally. With a focus on three male protagonists living in very distinct urban areas of Cape Town, this comparative ethnography shows that men's struggles to become invulnerable increase vulnerability. Through an analysis of masculinities as social assemblages, the study shows how affective health problems are tied to modern individualism rather than African 'tradition' that has become a clichâe in Eurocentric gender studies. Affective health is conceptualized as a balancing act between autonomy and connectivity that after colonialism and apartheid has become compromised through the imperative of self-reliance. This book provides a rare perspective on young men's vulnerability in everyday life that may affect the reader and spark discussion about how masculinities in relationships shape physical and psychological health. Moreover, it shows how men change in the face of distress in ways that may look different than global health and gender transformative approaches envision. Thick descriptions of actual events over the life course make the study accessible to both graduate and undergraduate students in the social sciences. Contributing to current debates on mental health and masculinity, the volume will be of interest to scholars from a number of disciplines including anthropology, gender studies, African studies, psychology and global health"--

Download or read book Richard Ford 1796-1858 written by Ian Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A connoisseur and major collector of paintings, who first brought the work of Velazquez to notice in England, Richard Ford had a profound effect on his hispanophile contemporaries with his encyclopedic Hand-Book for Travelers in Spain of 1845 (the fruit of his riding tours in Spain between 1830 and 1834) and Gatherings from Spain (1846). He was a more than useful artist, a colorful figure in early Victorian society and an influential literary critic - it was he who prompted John Murray to publish George Borrow's The Zincali and The Bible in Spain. Yet although his own writings are widely known, very little of consequence has been written about Ford himself."--BOOK JACKET.
