Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Extraordinary. An intellectual feast as well as a visual one' Edmund de Waal, author of The Hare with Amber Eyes The world comes to us in colour. But colour lives as much in our imaginations as it does in our surroundings, as this scintillating book reveals. Each chapter immerses the reader in a single colour, drawing together stories from the histories of art and humanity to illuminate the meanings it has been given over the eras and around the globe. Showing how artists, scientists, writers, philosophers, explorers and inventors have both shaped and been shaped by these wonderfully myriad meanings, James Fox reveals how, through colour, we can better understand their cultures, as well as our own. Each colour offers a fresh perspective on a different epoch, and together they form a vivid, exhilarating history of the world. 'We have projected our hopes, anxieties and obsessions onto colour for thousands of years,' Fox writes. 'The history of colour, therefore, is also a history of humanity.'
Download or read book Bright Signals written by Susan Murray and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First demonstrated in 1928, color television remained little more than a novelty for decades as the industry struggled with the considerable technical, regulatory, commercial, and cultural complications posed by the medium. Only fully adopted by all three networks in the 1960s, color television was imagined as a new way of seeing that was distinct from both monochrome television and other forms of color media. It also inspired compelling popular, scientific, and industry conversations about the use and meaning of color and its effects on emotions, vision, and desire. In Bright Signals Susan Murray traces these wide-ranging debates within and beyond the television industry, positioning the story of color television, which was replete with false starts, failure, and ingenuity, as central to the broader history of twentieth-century visual culture. In so doing, she shows how color television disrupted and reframed the very idea of television while it simultaneously revealed the tensions about technology's relationship to consumerism, human sight, and the natural world.

Book Synopsis The World According to Color by : James Fox
Download or read book The World According to Color written by James Fox and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A kaleidoscopic exploration that traverses history, literature, art, and science to reveal humans' unique and vibrant relationship with color. We have an extraordinary connection to color—we give it meanings, associations, and properties that last millennia and span cultures, continents, and languages. In The World According to Color, James Fox takes seven elemental colors—black, red, yellow, blue, white, purple, and green—and uncovers behind each a root idea, based on visual resemblances and common symbolism throughout history. Through a series of stories and vignettes, the book then traces these meanings to show how they morphed and multiplied and, ultimately, how they reveal a great deal about the societies that produced them: reflecting and shaping their hopes, fears, prejudices, and preoccupations. Fox also examines the science of how our eyes and brains interpret light and color, and shows how this is inherently linked with the meanings we give to hue. And using his background as an art historian, he explores many of the milestones in the history of art—from Bronze Age gold-work to Turner, Titian to Yves Klein—in a fresh way. Fox also weaves in literature, philosophy, cinema, archaeology, and art—moving from Monet to Marco Polo, early Japanese ink artists to Shakespeare and Goethe to James Bond. By creating a new history of color, Fox reveals a new story about humans and our place in the universe: second only to language, color is the greatest carrier of cultural meaning in our world.
Book Synopsis Black, White, and in Color by : Sasha Torres
Download or read book Black, White, and in Color written by Sasha Torres and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the representation of blackness on television at the height of the southern civil rights movement and again in the aftermath of the Reagan-Bush years. In the process, it looks carefully at how television's ideological projects with respect to race have supported or conflicted with the industry's incentive to maximize profits or consolidate power. Sasha Torres examines the complex relations between the television industry and the civil rights movement as a knot of overlapping interests. She argues that television coverage of the civil rights movement during 1955-1965 encouraged viewers to identify with black protestors and against white police, including such infamous villains as Birmingham's Bull Connor and Selma's Jim Clark. Torres then argues that television of the 1990s encouraged viewers to identify with police against putatively criminal blacks, even in its dramatizations of police brutality. Torres's pioneering analysis makes distinctive contributions to its fields. It challenges television scholars to consider the historical centrality of race to the constitution of the medium's genres, visual conventions, and industrial structures. And it displaces the analytical focus on stereotypes that has hamstrung assessments of television's depiction of African Americans, concentrating instead on the ways in which African Americans and their political collectives have actively shaped that depiction to advance civil rights causes. This book also challenges African American studies to pay closer and better attention to television's ongoing role in the organization and disorganization of U.S. racial politics.

Download or read book Equal Time written by Aniko Bodroghkozy and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equal Time: Television and the Civil Rights Movement explores the crucial role of network television in reconfiguring new attitudes in race relations during the civil rights movement. Due to widespread coverage, the civil rights revolution quickly became the United States' first televised major domestic news story. This important medium unmistakably influenced the ongoing movement for African American empowerment, desegregation, and equality. Aniko Bodroghkozy brings to the foreground network news treatment of now-famous civil rights events including the 1965 Selma voting rights campaign, integration riots at the University of Mississippi, and the March on Washington, including Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. She also examines the most high-profile and controversial television series of the era to feature African American actors--East Side/West Side, Julia, and Good Times--to reveal how entertainment programmers sought to represent a rapidly shifting consensus on what "blackness" and "whiteness" meant and how they now fit together.

Book Synopsis The History of Television, 1942 to 2000 by : Albert Abramson
Download or read book The History of Television, 1942 to 2000 written by Albert Abramson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-09-29 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albert Abramson published (with McFarland) in 1987 a landmark volume titled The History of Television, 1880-1941 ("massive...research"--Library Journal; "voluminous documentation"--Choice; "many striking old photos"--The TV Collector). At last he has produced the follow-up volume; the reader may be assured there is no other book in any language that is remotely comparable to it. Together, these two volumes provide the definitive technical history of the medium. Upon the development in the mid-1940s of new cameras and picture tubes that made commercial television possible worldwide, the medium rose rapidly to prominence. Perhaps even more important was the invention of the video tape recorder in 1956, allowing editing, re-shooting and rebroadcasting. This second volume, 1942 to 2000 covers these significant developments and much more. Chapters are devoted to television during World War II and the postwar era, the development of color television, Ampex Corporation's contributions, television in Europe, the change from helical to high band technology, solid state cameras, the television coverage of Apollo II, the rise of electronic journalism, television entering the studios, the introduction of the camcorder, the demise of RCA at the hands of GE, the domination of Sony and Matsushita, and the future of television in e-cinema and the 1080 P24 format. The book is heavily illustrated (as is the first volume).
Book Synopsis Emerging Countries & World Summary by : Kenneth F. Wilson
Download or read book Emerging Countries & World Summary written by Kenneth F. Wilson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 3 of the definitive Market Reference to global electronics production and markets, with forecasts to 1997. The countries covered in this volume are China, Egypt, Greece, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Venezuela. The aim is to cover all electronic products and components included in those products. These are grouped into 10 major categories which are common and directly comparable across all countries. Product groupings are further broken down in to sub-categories, the degree of detail of which, however, varies for each country depending on the importance of that product for each country and the availability of statistical sources. In compiling the Yearbook Series, trade statistics are analyzed in detail with over 350 separate catergories being employed. For some of the emerging countries, where trade statistics from a country are limited or unreliable, as in China, greater emphasis has been placed on trade statistics of countries trading with that country. Production statistics are collected from Government and Manufacturer's Association sources where these are available. Extensive use is also made of research reports, company reports, news items and work by other consultants to supplement and cross check the official and semi-official sources. From this "base year" estimates are built up, this being 1992 for the 1994 edition of the Yearbook. Production is then forecast for the next two years and markets for the next five. These forecasts are made in real terms using constant exchange rates and excluding inflation. Forecasts are based on the historical performance of each product, the general economic outlook, and the major growth influencing factors. Each new edition of the Yearbook is fully revised and updated with all sources being reanalysed in each successive edition.
