Download or read book Black Morocco written by Chouki El Hamel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Morocco: A History of Slavery, Race, and Islam chronicles the experiences, identity and achievements of enslaved black people in Morocco from the sixteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. Chouki El Hamel argues that we cannot rely solely on Islamic ideology as the key to explain social relations and particularly the history of black slavery in the Muslim world, for this viewpoint yields an inaccurate historical record of the people, institutions and social practices of slavery in Northwest Africa. El Hamel focuses on black Moroccans' collective experience beginning with their enslavement to serve as the loyal army of the Sultan Isma'il. By the time the Sultan died in 1727, they had become a political force, making and unmaking rulers well into the nineteenth century. The emphasis on the political history of the black army is augmented by a close examination of the continuity of black Moroccan identity through the musical and cultural practices of the Gnawa.

It is well documented that, for many people, colouring is a therapeutic, stress-relieving pastime. What could be better, then, than colouring pictures of the vibrant Moroccan city of Casablanca? While away the hours imagining yourself wandering through the streets of the medina, sipping a cocktail in Ricks Café, relaxing on the beach, or admiring the magnificent Hassan II Mosque. Book Synopsis Arts and Crafts of Morocco by : James F Jereb
Download or read book Arts and Crafts of Morocco written by James F Jereb and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals the dazzling fusion of cultural influences in Moroccan arts and crafts Its unique geographical location established Morocco as a center of cultural exchange, and its remarkable arts and crafts are the product of a centuries-long intermingling of influences from other parts of Africa and the traditions of Islam and from the singular cultural alliance of the Moors and the Spaniards. Superbly illustrated with more than 150 specially commissioned color photographs, Arts and Crafts of Morocco illuminates the wonders of this thriving tradition. Dr. James F. Jereb’s pioneering account, based on his own first hand research, examines an extensive range of media: vibrantly colored textiles; jewelry in a range of exquisite configurations; original leather, wood, and metalwork; and an enormous variety of pottery and ceramics. These marvelous objects derive either from a rural lifestyle, with symbols and patterns that reflect the powerful animistic beliefs of the Berber country artisans, or from the cities, where Islamic tenets compose the cultural foundation. All of these works are thus endowed with a spiritually charged significance that determines their functions and ensures their remarkable beauty. This in-depth study is made complete with guidance on Moroccan arts and crafts from expert collectors and a revealing analysis of the belief systems, festivals, and ceremonies that inform the predominant techniques and visual motifs of Moroccan art.
Book Synopsis Les Femmes Du Maroc by : Lalla Essaydi
Download or read book Les Femmes Du Maroc written by Lalla Essaydi and published by . This book was released on 2009-10-16 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alluring and rich, Lalla Essaydi's work plays with the representation of Islam and the Orient in the West. Her work reaches far beyond Islamic culture to invoke the Western fascination with the veil and the harem as expressed in 19th-century Orientalist painting which suggested exoticism, fantasy and mysticism were abound in Arab culture. In an act of reclamation, Essayadi re-uses this visual language - the exquisite architecture, the interior decor, the clothing - to turn both the visualisation of women and of Islam in a different direction.

Book Synopsis Spain and Morocco by : Henry Theophilus Finck
Download or read book Spain and Morocco written by Henry Theophilus Finck and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain and Morocco: Studies in Local Color Is a tourist justified in writing a book on two vast countries like Spain and Morocco, after a flying visit of barely two months? That depends obviously on his aim and his method. If he ventures to write about their political and social institutions after so brief an acquaintance, he doubtless deserves censure for presumption and hasty generalization. But if his aim is merely an attempt to transfer to the pages of a book an impression of some of the most striking samples of local color he came across, then he is actually better qualified, and more in the mood, for doing his work properly after a visit of two months than after a sojourn of two years; for what is most novel, characteristic, and romantic in a foreign country strikes us most vividly at the beginning, and gradually loses its fascination as daily repetition makes it seem normal. Book excerpt: This unique anthology of crime fiction features 15 original stories of “scandals, smugglers, and other sordid tales” by award-winning Moroccan authors (CrimeReads). At first glance, Marrakech may seem like an odd setting for noir fiction. Contemporary Moroccans call it The Joyful City—a place where locals are happy to joke about gossip and quick to forget stories of crime. But in Marrakech Noir, some of Morocco’s finest authors address old wrong that have been kept hidden behind the city’s ancient gates, and spin contemporary tales of poverty, grift, and violence in this global tourist destination. Marrakech Noir features brand-new stories by Fouad Laroui, Allal Bourqia, Abdelkader Benali, Mohamed Zouhair, Mohamed Achaari, Hanane Derkaoui, Fatiha Morchid, Mahi Binebine, Mohamed Nedali, Halima Zine El Abidine, My Seddik Rabbaj, Yassin Adnan, Karima Nadir, Taha Adnan, and Lahcen Bakour.
