Book excerpt: Georges Seurat died in 1891, aged only 32, and yet in a career that lasted little more than a decade he revolutionized technique in painting, spearheaded a new movement, Neoimpressionism, and bought a degree of scientific rigour to his investigations of colour that would prove profoundly influential well into the 20th century. As a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Seurat read Chevreul's 1839 book on the theory of colour and this, along with his own analysis of Delacroix' paintings and the aesthetic observations of scientist Charles Henry, led him to formulate the concept of Divisionism. This was a method of painting around colour contrasts in which shade and tone are built up through dots of paint (pointillism) that emphasise the complex inter-relation of light and shadow.

Book excerpt: The colour forecasting process is a major driving force in the fashion and textile industries but is complex, highly intuitive and little understood. This textbook for students of fashion and design discusses the development of the various driving forces of fashion, when colour forecasting began and how it has developed to its present day state. Colour terminology and some of the more subjective tools used by colour forecasters are explained, and their strengths and weaknesses are compared. Also, a model is given of the colour forecasting process and this is discussed in detail. Finally, readers are shown how forecasting methodologies are used to develop 'colour stories'.

Book excerpt: Colour Dynamics II is based on the "world alphabet" of Aristotle's categories, extended by Rudolf Steiner. It enables readers to deepen and extend their own color insights. Color affects us deeply. We can feel the soul of the world when immersed in color. Imagine the sun shining through the pale greens of spring beech leaves with a cobalt blue sky above and shimmering bluebells below. You feel the world afresh and are renewed. Color has enchanted you. You and color are one. And you are ready to paint... Angela Lord offers a vivid approach to color theory that will renew the way you see, experience and interpret the formative forces of color, and to paint from the heart of each color. This is a useful resource for art students, painters, teachers, art therapists and interior designers. It enlivens Aristotle's invitation to 'delight in the senses', by a renewed aesthetics that refreshes the soul as a counter to the digital, virtual, screen world.

Book excerpt: "Is there also such a thing as 'the essence of color'? For me, the essence is the spiritual aspect that lives in color. Making this spiritual aspect accessible is the purpose of this book." -- Kees Veenman We are all familiar with the world of color, but can we learn to experience color more intensely? Can we learn to penetrate colors in a more profound way? This book takes the reader into the activity of the colors of the spectrum by investigating them meditatively. The author explains aspects of color phenomenology and prepares the reader for color meditations, including some that he has incorporated into his own personal practices. Kees Veenman, a phenomenologist who specializes in colors, begins by observing the spring gold and the autumn gold of trees before introducing the phenomenological method whereby his research connects with Goethe's theory of color and that of Rudolf Steiner. Using numerous examples and experiments, Veenman guides the reader toward the dynamics and essence of colors, describing his research into the nature of colors along with fresh questions that help us penetrate the world of colors ever more deeply. The author also considers light therapy and the relationship of colors to the seasons, as well as to fairytales. The reader is encouraged to meditate with and in colors to discover and experience, among other things, consciousness of Christ. All of this is presented with clear descriptions supplemented with color images. Color Meditation is for those who want to appreciate the phenomena and wonders--the being--of color more deeply and fully understand how color can enrich one's soul and spiritual activity. "The correspondence between the emergence and effect of a color outside us and the appearance within us is found in the polarity between light and darkness. Light is a symbol of clear day consciousness, whereas darkness represents the impenetrability of the will. Here we come to the intimate relationship between the world of colors and that of human consciousness with its active and passive side." -- Christine Gruwez (foreword) Translated by Laura Liska from Kleurmeditatie (Uitgeverij Pentagon, Amsterdam, 2015). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies in this book take an ethnomethodological approach to educational phenomena. Ethnomethodology’s concern is with the locally accomplished and situated character of social order. With reference to educational phenomena, this means that ethnomethodology investigates how the ‘natural facts’ of educational life, such as daily activities in school classrooms, are produced as such in the first place, rather than taking for granted the recognisability of these facts and then theorising their explanation. In this sense, ethnomethodological studies contrast markedly with other approaches to the study of education. Each of the chapters in the book consists of a new and original study. Collectively, they exhibit the continuing vitality of this tradition and demonstrate ethnomethodology’s special commitment to the analysis of educational phenomena as locally ordered and accomplished.

Book excerpt: This book presents prospective, industrially proven methods and software solutions for storing, processing, and viewing multimedia content on digital cameras, camcorders, TV, and mobile devices. Most of the algorithms described here are implemented as systems on chip firmware or as software products and have low computational complexity and memory consumption. In the four parts of the book, which contains a total of 16 chapters, the authors address solutions for the conversion of images and videos by super-resolution, depth estimation and control and mono-to-stereo (2D to 3D) conversion; display applications by video editing; the real-time detection of sport episodes; and the generation and reproduction of natural effects. The practical principles of machine learning are illustrated using technologies such as image classification as a service, mobile user profiling, and automatic view planning with dictionary-based compressed sensing in magnetic resonance imaging. The implementation of these technologies in mobile devices is discussed in relation to algorithms using a depth camera based on a colour-coded aperture, the animated graphical abstract of an image, a motion photo, and approaches and methods for iris recognition on mobile platforms. The book reflects the authors’ practical experience in the development of algorithms for industrial R&D and the commercialization of technologies. Explains digital techniques for digital cameras, camcorders, TV, mobile devices; Offers essential algorithms for the processing pipeline in multimedia devices and accompanying software tools; Features advanced topics on data processing, addressing current technology challenges.

Book excerpt: What are photographs ‘doing’ in museums? Why are some photographs valued and others not? Why are some photographic practices visible and not others? What value systems and hierarchies do they reflect? What Photographs Do explores how museums are defined through their photographic practices. It focuses not on formal collections of photographs as accessioned objects, be they ‘fine art’ or ‘archival’, but on what might be termed ‘non-collections’: the huge number of photographs that are integral to the workings of museums yet ‘invisible’, existing outside the structures of ‘the collection’. These photographs, however, raise complex and ambiguous questions about the ways in which such accumulations of photographs create the values, hierarchies, histories and knowledge-systems, through multiple, folded and overlapping layers that might be described as the museum’s ecosystem. These photographic dynamics are studied through the prism of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, an institution with over 150 years' engagement with photography’s multifaceted uses and existences in the museum. The book differs from more usual approaches to museum studies in that it presents not only formal essays but short ‘auto-ethnographic’ interventions from museum practitioners, from studio photographers and image managers to conservators and non-photographic curators, who address the significance of both historical and contemporary practices of photography in their work. As such this book offers an extensive and unique range of accounts of what photographs ‘do’ in museums, expanding the critical discourse of both photography and museums.

This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses how contemporary genre cinema represents trans-identified characters. Informed by key debates within transfeminism, queer theory, contemporary trans studies – and engaging with the concerns voiced by gender critical feminism – this culturally oriented book critiques the representation of trans characters in a range of cinematic genres, including the musical, period costume drama, the road movie, melodrama, coming-of-age stories, and romances. The case studies address the ways in which trans identifications have been coded within the narrative and stylistic expectations of the genres. Are genre films successful in affirming trans identifications or do they reinforce trans stereotypes and anti-trans discourses? This is a timely and accessible book, which addresses Anglophonic, European and Latin American cinemas, and is ideal for students studying courses in Film Studies, Media Studies, Cultural Studies or Gender Studies.
