It only took a few seconds for the drunk to enter the same intersection, running the red light in the process. Ed would live, but would never walk again. The information in this book will teach you to avoid such distractions. Using the same awareness technique taught in many law enforcement academies self defense schools to build high levels of alertness, this information may save your life."

Book excerpt: Why is the sky blue? Why is pink for girls and blue for boys? Why do prisoners wear orange? And why can one colour have so many opposite meanings? If lobsters are a red emblem of privilege how is it that a red flag can also be the banner of Communism? Jude Stewart, a design expert and writer, digs into this rich subject with gusto, telling her favourite stories about colour as she discovers what it can really mean. Each chapter is devoted to a colour, opening with an infographic map that links such unlikely pairings as fox-hunting and flamingos. From there on in, you're plunged into a kaleidoscopic tour of the universe that encompasses everything from wildflowers to Japanese warriors. The links between them reveal hidden realities that you never would have suspected. Roy G. Biv is a reference and inspiration for everyone, with sidebars and graphics galore. The aim is simple: to tantalise and inform, and to make you think about colour in a completely new way.

Book excerpt: For any/all design-based courses that emphasize Color Theory. This text presents color and light in an integrated way, incorporating not only the basics of color harmony and usage, but also providing information on the vast and often hidden ways in which color affects our everyday lives. Based on well-controlled, scientific studies (which dispel the misinformation about color that has become commonplace), it explores the effects of color on our health, spending habits, perceived image, communication, weight, sex lives, and consumer brand preferences. Color is an integral part of design, and designers need a thorough understanding of color's effects on the end user. This text presents information essential to the color selection process.

Book excerpt: You are a mind reader, born with an extraordinary ability to understand what others think, feel, believe, want, and know. It’s a sixth sense you use every day, in every personal and professional relationship you have. At its best, this ability allows you to achieve the most important goal in almost any life: connecting, deeply and intimately and honestly, to other human beings. At its worst, it is a source of misunderstanding and unnecessary conflict, leading to damaged relationships and broken dreams. How good are you at knowing the minds of others? How well can you guess what others think of you, know who really likes you, or tell when someone is lying? How well do you really understand the minds of those closest to you, from your spouse to your kids to your best friends? Do you really know what your coworkers, employees, competitors, or clients want? In this illuminating exploration of one of the great mysteries of the human mind, University of Chicago psychologist Nicholas Epley introduces us to what scientists have learned about our ability to understand the most complicated puzzle on the planet—other people—and the surprising mistakes we so routinely make. Why are we sometimes blind to the minds of others, treating them like objects or animals? Why do we sometimes talk to our cars, or the stars, as if there is a mind that can hear us? Why do we so routinely believe that others think, feel, and want what we do when, in fact, they do not? And why do we believe we understand our spouses, family, and friends so much better than we actually do? Mindwise will not turn other people into open books, but it will give you the wisdom to revolutionize how you think about them—and yourself.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Th Living Plant: A Description and Interpretation of Its Functions and Structure The very first words I would write in this book are addressed to my botanical colleagues, whom I wish to inform that the work is not intended for them. In this statement I am by no means invoking immunity from scientific criticism, but emphasizing the aim of the book. It is not designed as a digest of our present scientific knowledge of plant physiology for the use of experts in that subject, but, in conformity with the aim of the series of which it is a part, it seeks to present to all who have interest to learn an accurate and vivid conception of the principal things in plant life. I was once myself such a learner, and I have tried to write such a book as I would then have delighted to read. It is, in a word, an attempt at that literature of interpretation which was foreshadowed by Francis Bacon in the fine passage that stands on its dedicatory page. This aim will explain peculiarities of the work not otherwise obvious. Thus, I have been at more pains to be clear than to be brief, assuming on the part of my reader no great knowledge of the subject, but a large willingness to take trouble to learn; and as I have tried to discuss every process with fulness enough to elucidate its nature, my book has wandered through a leisurely course to a length quite shockingly great. But I comfort myself with the reflection that the plan and the subject hardly permit other treatment; for a royal road to a real understanding of plant phenomena does neither exist nor can it be built.
