Book Synopsis Concrete Vaulted Construction in Imperial Rome by : Lynne C. Lancaster
Download or read book Concrete Vaulted Construction in Imperial Rome written by Lynne C. Lancaster and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-08 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete Vaulted Construction in Imperial Rome examines methods and techniques that enabled builders to construct some of the most imposing monuments of ancient Rome. Focusing on structurally innovative vaulting and the factors that influenced its advancement, Lynne Lancaster also explores a range of related practices, including lightweight pumice as aggregate, amphoras in vaults, vaulting ribs, metal tie bars, and various techniques of buttressing. She provides the geological background of the local building stones and applies mineralogical analysis to determine material provenance, which in turn suggests trading patterns and land use. Lancaster also examines construction techniques in relation to the social, economic, and political contexts of Rome, in an effort to draw connections between changes in the building industry and the events that shaped Roman society from the early empire to late antiquity. This book was awarded the James R. Wiseman Book Award from the Archaeological Institute of America in 2007.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonnade, Vol. 5: January, 1943 In time, this lovely girl became my bosom friend, and many unhappy problems which came to me at school, I brought to her, always con fident of Sincere consideration. My prob lems, when I really pause for reflection, Weren't so weighty after all, usually a current heart interest or something; but Pie always listened attentively, giving in her slow meditative manner, h'er unbiased opinion at the conclusion. What always amazed me about her, was the utter lack of concern over a gay social life. To be sure, she figured largely In our bull ses sions over cokes late at night, and our impromptu get-togethers, but When it came to dating and our college dances, Pie just didn't play a part. She dances well and gracefully too. We danced often with her in our rooms between classes or after dinner, and many were the times we'd land dizzily on a bed after a crazy jitterbug round, breathless from our Splurge of energy, Shouting with laughter. We often talked of taking her to school dances and I feel ashamed that We never did, but all our dances Were girl-break affairs, and fear ing that it Would be more of an ordeal than a pleasure, we dismissed the idea of taking her. None of us were tactful or clever enough (i'm not quite sure which), to get dates for Pie, and She never wished us to make contacts or arrangements and there it stood. Pie read widely, having many magazines and books. In Braille. In Our Freshman year When they called lights out on us at ten, I'd envy her lying so comfy in the dark, her chubby fingers tracing lightly over the Braille perforations, as She read on, While I had to surrender my prized novel of the moment to the darkness. She'd laugh when I'd say, Gee, Pie, one sure thing you can never get a headache from reading! When the much dreaded tests and exams rolled around, they would find Pie, Screw ball and me, studying until the wee hours. No, We weren't being noble to study with Pie, not by a long Shot, for it was she who helped. Screwball and I were more the scatterbrain type, whereas Pie could retain anything she studied. To my emphatic, No. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
