Book Synopsis Innovation in Energy Law and Technology by : Donald Zillman
Download or read book Innovation in Energy Law and Technology written by Donald Zillman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few existential challenges more serious in the twenty first century than energy transition. As current trends in energy production prove unsustainable for the environment, energy security, and economic development, innovation becomes imperative. Yet, with technological challenges, come legal challenges. Zillman, Godden, Paddock, and Roggenkamp assemble a team of experts in their field to debate how the law may have to adapt to changes in the area. What regulatory approach should be used? How do we deal with longer-term investment horizons and so called 'stranded assets' such as coal-fired power stations? And can a form of energy justice be achieved which encompasses human rights, sustainable development goals, and the eradication of energy poverty? With a concept as unwieldy as energy innovation, it is high time for a text tackling changes which are dynamic and diverse across different communities, and which provides a thorough examination of the legal ramifications of the most recent technological changes. This book which be of vital importance to lawyers, policy-makers, economists, and the general reader.

Book Synopsis Routledge Handbook of Energy Transitions by : Kathleen Araújo
Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Energy Transitions written by Kathleen Araújo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Energy Transitions draws upon a unique and multidisciplinary network of experts from around the world to explore the expanding field of energy transitions. This Handbook recognizes that considerable changes are underway or are being developed for the modes in which energy is sourced, delivered, and utilized. Employing a sociotechnical approach that accounts for economics and engineering, as well as more cross-cutting factors, including innovation, policy and planning, and management, the volume considers contemporary ideas and practices that characterize the field. The book explores pressing issues, including choices about infrastructure, the role of food systems and materials, sustainability, and energy democracy. Disruption is a core theme throughout, with the authors examining topics such as digitalization, extreme weather, and COVID-19, along with regional similarities and differences. Overall, the Routledge Handbook of Energy Transitions advances the field of energy transitions by connecting ideas, taking stock of empirical insights, and challenging how we think about the theory and practice of energy systems change. This innovative volume functions as an authoritative roadmap with both regional and global relevance. It will be an essential resource for students, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners researching and working in the fields of energy transitions, planning, environmental management and policy, sustainable business, engineering, science and technology studies, political science, geography, design anthropology, and environmental justice. “With the exception of Chapter 26, no part of this book may be reprinted or reproduced or utilised in any form or by any electronic, mechanical, or other means, now known or hereafter invented, including photocopying and recording, or in any information storage or retrieval system, without permission in writing from the publishers.” Chapter 26 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons [Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND)] 4.0 license.

Book Synopsis Wind Energy in Colombia by : Walter Vergara
Download or read book Wind Energy in Colombia written by Walter Vergara and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wind regime in Colombia has been rated among the best in South America. However, under the current circumstances, and on its own, the interconnected system would not likely promote wind power. This report is targeted to analysts, planners, operators, generators and decision makers in Colombia and other countries in the region and provides a set of policy options to promote the use of wind power. The potential instruments assessed in this study include financial instruments, government fiscal mechanisms, and adjustments to the regulatory system. The single most effective policy instrument to promote wind power in Colombia consists on valuing the firm energy offered by wind, its potential complementarity to the hydrological regime and enabling wind power an access to reliability payments.

Book Synopsis The Coal of El Cerrejón by : Harvey F. Kline
Download or read book The Coal of El Cerrejón written by Harvey F. Kline and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1980 the Colombian government made an agreement with an Exxon subsidiary for the development of the coal of the northern section of the El Cerrejón region, thus entering into one of the largest joint ventures with a transnational enterprise in the history of Latin America. In May 1981 the government awarded coal-development rights in central El Cerrejón to a Spanish-Colombian consortium. This book is an analysis of the decisions that led to the two contracts and of the bargaining of an oil-importing developing country with transnational enterprises (TNEs) over a previously unexploited resource during the energy crisis. Combining the literature on dependencia and that on bargaining between developing countries and TNE's, this book advances a "dependent bargaining" hypothesis. It finds that there was a continuum of Colombian policy makers, from the "Nationalist" who favored energy development with no TNE involvement, to the "Reactionary" who was willing to agree to any energy development proposed by the foreign companies. Between those two extremes were numerous varieties of dependent bargainers who accepted the constraints of dependency and TNE participation in energy contracts as givens, but who used their political and technical abilities to obtain what they perceived as the best deal available to the country. After a general introduction, the book investigates the Colombian context for policy making, presenting the patterns that had developed by 1970. It then considers the El Cerrejón decisions made between 1970 and 1981, giving historical detail and analyzing the evolution of dependent bargaining over time. Finally, it presents conclusions dealing with the variety of dependent bargainers and offering an explanation of the variation; a comparison of the El Cerrejón cases with similar decisions in other developing countries; and the prospects for future Colombian bargaining, in the light of the El Cerrejón decisions. The Coal of El Cerrejón shows that matters such as coal development in Third World countries are not completely determined by international forces, but rather that much of the credit for beneficial contracts--and the blame for prejudicial ones--rightly is deserved by the political elites of the countries.
