Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Supramolecular chemistry has reached a high level of sophistication and maturity, especially in the last 5-10 years. The sophistication is primarily evident in the highly complex chemical architectures that have been synthesized to accomplish specific functions such as selective binding and transport of substrates, in catalysis, and for the formation of assemblies, to name just a few of the applications. Many other molecular structures have been synthesized to form unusual materials with interesting and/or useful properties. From this point of view, the field is mature, as would have been anticipated from its historical development, starting in 1967 with Pedersen and the crown ethers. Since that time, the field has evolved mainly from a synthetic organic perspective. There are notable exceptions to this statement, but in general it holds true that the major advances were made in the laboratories of organic chemists with considerable topological insight. by The design and synthesis of the molecules was also partly guided physical insight provided by measurements and calculations done by physical chemists. As a consequence, many chemical systems were synthesized in relatively small amounts to afford their full characterization but not in large enough quantities to fully explore their intended properties or structures. Thus in the decades of the 70's and 80's physical chemists played an important role in guiding the future directions in the field, providing needed structural and energetic information and providing improved experimental designs.

Focusing on the recent trends of methodology and technology, which are indispensable in monolayer science. They are applied to monolayers of surfactants, amphiphiles, polymers, dendrimers, enzymes, and proteins, which serve many uses. Introduces the methodologies of scanning probe microscopy, surface force instrumentation, surface spectroscopy, surface plasmon optics, reflectometry, and near-field scanning optical microscopy. Modern interface reaction method, lithographic technology and different types of monolayers like adsorption, Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers at air/liquid, liquid/liquid, liquid/solid and air/solid interfaces, are all covered. Introducing novel methodologies and technologies Covering the different types of monolayers Discusses all currently available instrumental techniques for studying all types of monolayer

Book excerpt: In 1969 the U.S. Air Force issued a statement that read' "No UFO reported, investigated and evaluated by the Air Force was ever an indication of threat to our national security." This statement is patently false. It has been proven untrue by the testimony of many military officers and airmen and documentation of incidents involving UFOs and nuclear weapons, testimonies of which the U.S. Air Force was fully aware. Unidentified details many of these testimonies, some for the first time. As partial justification for its position, the Air Force cites a University of Colorado study that was contracted and paid for by federal funds. Unidentified reveals how this study was actually just another part of the plan to cover up the reality of the UFO phenomenon. For the first time, Unidentified publishes evidence that the investigators for the Colorado study knew about the UFO-related missile shutdown incidents but did not investigate them or include them in their final report.

Book excerpt: Plant Cell Biology, Second Edition: From Astronomy to Zoology connects the fundamentals of plant anatomy, plant physiology, plant growth and development, plant taxonomy, plant biochemistry, plant molecular biology, and plant cell biology. It covers all aspects of plant cell biology without emphasizing any one plant, organelle, molecule, or technique. Although most examples are biased towards plants, basic similarities between all living eukaryotic cells (animal and plant) are recognized and used to best illustrate cell processes. This is a must-have reference for scientists with a background in plant anatomy, plant physiology, plant growth and development, plant taxonomy, and more. - Includes chapter on using mutants and genetic approaches to plant cell biology research and a chapter on -omic technologies - Explains the physiological underpinnings of biological processes to bring original insights relating to plants - Includes examples throughout from physics, chemistry, geology, and biology to bring understanding on plant cell development, growth, chemistry and diseases - Provides the essential tools for students to be able to evaluate and assess the mechanisms involved in cell growth, chromosome motion, membrane trafficking and energy exchange
