Book Synopsis Depression in Collegiate Student-athletes: Nutritional Intake as a Risk Factor by : Meghan K. Krasnow
Download or read book Depression in Collegiate Student-athletes: Nutritional Intake as a Risk Factor written by Meghan K. Krasnow and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The rates of depression, particularly in young adult college age populations, are quite pervasive and troubling. Previous literature indicates collegiate student-athletes may be at an elevated risk for experiencing depressive symptoms due to unique demands and stressors in addition to navigating life as a college student. Although certain risk factors have been identified specifically pertaining to collegiate student-athletes, researchers continue to recommend further studies that may investigate risk factors for depression in this population with the intention of preventing, mitigating, and remediating depressive symptoms. More recently, the field of nutritional psychiatry, along with nutrition literature, are showing the connection between nutrition and mental health. Therefore, as more evidence is reinforcing the important role of nutrition related to mental health concerns such as depression, the aim of this study is to examine nutritional intake as a risk factor for depression specifically within the collegiate student-athlete population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report concludes that the prevalence of specific mental disorders is likely to remain broadly stable over the next 20 years. However, costs are projected to increase substantially, largely because of the expected increase in the number of people with dementia. The cost of lost employment is also projected to increase, confirming the major adverse economic impact of poor mental health. The report calls for future costs to be met, a focus on employment, more evidence-based interventions, better systems of early detection and treatment of dementia, and further research into the cost-effectiveness of a range of interventions, including mental health promotion and prevention initiatives.

Book Synopsis Diet Quality and Mental Health in College Students: Impact on Dietary Factors Including Intake of Protein, Sugar, Vegetable and Omega-3 Fatty Acid on Depression by : Yulu Wang
Download or read book Diet Quality and Mental Health in College Students: Impact on Dietary Factors Including Intake of Protein, Sugar, Vegetable and Omega-3 Fatty Acid on Depression written by Yulu Wang and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression is one of the most debilitating disorders among youth. Many factors impact depression risk, and dietary quality is one of the most significant modifiable factors. This work was to investigate whether diet quality, including protein, sugar, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids’ intake, had any effect on the development of depression. Data from 82 subjects were used for analysis. There was no significant relationship between Dietary Quality Index (p=.21, n=82) and depression based on this research. Results included total protein (p=.77, n=82), animal-based protein (p=.77, n=82), vegetable-based protein (p=.29, n=82), total sugar (p=.55, n=78), added sugar (p=.48, n=78), total vegetable (p=.56, n=82) and omega3 fatty acids (p=.92, n=82). These results were not up to expectations and did not conform to previous findings. Future research should be performed with a larger sample size among the college-aged population to determine the relationship between dietary factors and depression risk.
Book Synopsis The Mind-Gut Connection by : Emeran Mayer
Download or read book The Mind-Gut Connection written by Emeran Mayer and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cutting-edge neuroscience combines with the latest discoveries on the human microbiome to inform this practical guide that proves once and for all the inextricable, biological link between mind and body. We have all experienced the connection between our mind and our gut—the decision we made because it “felt right;” the butterflies in our stomach before a big meeting; the anxious stomach rumbling when we’re stressed out. While the dialogue between the gut and the brain has been recognized by ancient healing traditions, including Aryuvedic and Chinese medicine, Western medicine has failed to appreciate the complexity of how the brain, gut, and more recently, the microbiome—the microorganisms that live inside us—communicate with one another. In The Mind-Gut Connection, Dr. Emeran Mayer, Executive Director of the UCLA Center for Neurobiology of Stress, offers a revolutionary look at this developing science, teaching us how to harness the power of the mind-gut connection to take charge of our health. The Mind-Gut Connection, shows how to keep the communication brain-gut communication clear and balanced to: • Heal the gut by focusing on a plant-based diet • Balance the microbiome by consuming fermented foods and probiotics, fasting, and cutting out sugar and processed foods • Promote weight loss by detoxifying and creating a healthy digestion and maximum nutrient absorption • Boost immunity and prevent the onset of neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s • Generate a happier mindset and reduce fatigue, moodiness, anxiety, and depression • Prevent and heal GI disorders such as leaky gut syndrome; food sensitivities and allergies; and IBS; as well as digestive discomfort such as heartburn and bloating • And much more. Supplemental enhancement PDF accompanies the audiobook.

Book Synopsis Examining the Role of Anxiety and Depression in Predicting Dietary Choices in Emerging Adults by : Michelle M. L. Keck
Download or read book Examining the Role of Anxiety and Depression in Predicting Dietary Choices in Emerging Adults written by Michelle M. L. Keck and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the role of anxiety and depression symptoms in predicting dietary choices in emerging adults while accounting for sex differences in these relationships. Participants were 225 English speaking undergraduates between the ages of 18 and 25 who were enrolled in psychology courses at a university in the southeastern United States. Participants were recruited through an online research recruitment application utilized by the university. Participants volunteered for a two-phased anonymous survey monitoring the effects of eating habits and gastrointestinal health in young adults. As part of this effort, participants completed self-report measures related to anxiety and depression, as well as an automated, self-administered 24-hour diet recall. Multigroup path analysis was used to test the primary hypotheses. A decrease in total caloric intake and an increase in sugar consumption was found as self-reported symptoms of anxiety and depression increased. There were sex differences in the relationship between depression and food choices. Men consumed more saturated fat as well as less fruit and vegetables as self-reported symptoms of depression increased. Overall, results suggest symptoms of depression are a risk factor for poor nutrition in men. The findings provide another justification to screen for psychological distress in primary care given the implications on behavioral lifestyle and health. Longitudinal studies with larger samples should be conducted to confirm these findings.
Book Synopsis Psychosocial Interventions for Mental and Substance Use Disorders by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Psychosocial Interventions for Mental and Substance Use Disorders written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental health and substance use disorders affect approximately 20 percent of Americans and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Although a wide range of evidence-based psychosocial interventions are currently in use, most consumers of mental health care find it difficult to know whether they are receiving high-quality care. Although the current evidence base for the effects of psychosocial interventions is sizable, subsequent steps in the process of bringing a psychosocial intervention into routine clinical care are less well defined. Psychosocial Interventions for Mental and Substance Use Disorders details the reasons for the gap between what is known to be effective and current practice and offers recommendations for how best to address this gap by applying a framework that can be used to establish standards for psychosocial interventions. The framework described in Psychosocial Interventions for Mental and Substance Use Disorders can be used to chart a path toward the ultimate goal of improving the outcomes. The framework highlights the need to (1) support research to strengthen the evidence base on the efficacy and effectiveness of psychosocial interventions; (2) based on this evidence, identify the key elements that drive an intervention's effect; (3) conduct systematic reviews to inform clinical guidelines that incorporate these key elements; (4) using the findings of these systematic reviews, develop quality measures - measures of the structure, process, and outcomes of interventions; and (5) establish methods for successfully implementing and sustaining these interventions in regular practice including the training of providers of these interventions. The recommendations offered in this report are intended to assist policy makers, health care organizations, and payers that are organizing and overseeing the provision of care for mental health and substance use disorders while navigating a new health care landscape. The recommendations also target providers, professional societies, funding agencies, consumers, and researchers, all of whom have a stake in ensuring that evidence-based, high-quality care is provided to individuals receiving mental health and substance use services.
