Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ensure Basel III compliance with expert analysis specific to Islamic Finance Islamic Capital Markets and Products provides a thorough examination of Islamic capital markets (ICM), with particular attention to the products that they offer and the legal and regulatory infrastructure within which they operate. Since Islamic banks act as asset managers, attention is paid to the regulatory challenges which they face in the light of Basel III, as regards both eligible capital and liquidity risk management. The authors of the chapters are professionals and practitioners, and write from experience. The editors also contributed to some of the chapters. The markets and products covered include Islamic equities, Islamic investment certificates (Sukūk) which are Shari'ah compliant alternatives to conventional bonds, and Islamic Collective Investment Schemes. The coverage of legal and regulatory issues includes an examination of the implications for ICM of securities laws and regulations and of Basel III, as well as collateralisation issues. Shari'ah compliance aspects, in terms both of the selection criteria for Islamic equities and of the 'purification' of impermissible components of income, are also examined in some detail, as are the implications of Basel III for eligible capital in general and for Shari'ah compliant capital instruments in particular. A similar analysis is also made of the implications of the Basel III requirements for liquidity risk management and high quality liquid assets (HQLA), including Shari'ah compliant HQLA. The book concludes with three case studies, two describing the ICM in Malaysia and Bahrain and a third which describes Sukūk issued as Shari'ah compliant capital instruments, followed by brief concluding remarks by the editors.

Book excerpt: The professional practice as well as the academic discipline of planning has been fundamentally re-invented all over the world in recent decades. In this astonishing transition, the thinking and scholarship of Patsy Healey appears as a constantly recurring influence and inspiration around the globe. The purpose of this book is to present, discuss and celebrate Healey’s seminal contributions to the development of the theory and practice of spatial planning. The volume contains a selection of 13 less readily available, but nevertheless, key texts by Healey, which have been selected to represent the trajectory of Patsy’s work across the several decades of her research career. 12 original chapters by a wide range of invited contributors take the ideas in the reprinted papers as points of departure for their own work, tracing out their continuing relevance for contemporary and future directions in planning scholarship. In doing so, these chapters tease out the themes and interests in Healey’s work which are still highly relevant to the planning project. The title - Connections - symbolises relationality, possibly the most outstanding element linking Patsy’s ideas. The book showcases the wide international influence of Patsy’s work and celebrates the whole trajectory of work to show how many of her ideas on for instance the role of theory in planning, processes of change, networking as a mode of governance, how ideas spread, and ways of thinking planning democratically were ahead of their time and are still of importance.

The first one analyses the various types of institutional investors, institutions which, with different objectives, professionally manage portfolios of financial and real assets on behalf of a wide variety of individuals. This part goes on with an in-depth analysis of the economic, technical and regulatory characteristics of the different types of investment funds and of other types of asset management products, which have a high rate of substitutability with investment funds and represent their natural competitors. The second part of the book identifies and investigates the stages of the investment portfolio management. Given the importance of strategic asset allocation in explaining the ex post performance of any type of investment portfolio, this part provides an in-depth analysis of asset allocation methods, illustrating the different theoretical and operational solutions available to institutional investors. The third part describes performance assessment, its breakdown and risk control, with an in-depth examination of performance evaluation techniques, returns-based style analysis approaches, and performance attribution models. Finally, the fourth part deals with the subject of diversification into alternative asset classes, identifying the common characteristics and their possible role within the framework of investment management policies. This part analyses hedge funds, private equity, real estate, commodities, and currency overlay techniques.

Book excerpt: The global listed property sector has been characterized by a variety of noteworthy developments in recent times, the proliferation of real estate investment trust-type structures in countries around the world key among them. Despite an uncertain economic environment, REITs have proven their ability to promote institutional real estate investments in global financial markets. This highly practical book features a comprehensive analysis of both the legal and tax underpinnings of REIT-friendly legislation in a variety of the world’s most significant jurisdictions. With regard to the legal framework, the structure and functioning of a REIT are carefully investigated and explained. In terms of tax issues, the book focuses on such key issues as: REIT formation, operation and liquidation; mergers, acquisitions and dispositions; and planning for public and private REIT offerings and re-securitizations. REITs are inherently complex, and their interplay with tax treaties further compounds the complexity. This highly accessible yet authoritative work is the perfect decision-making tool for any professional looking for perspective and guidance on the challenges and opportunities REITs engender.

This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imposing UK tax on an entity or those linked to it involves understanding what kind of entity is being dealt with, especially when it is formed outside the UK. Is it a company, a partnership, a trust or something else? This often involves considering whether the entity is ‘tax transparent’ and if so, what that means. While of great importance, the UK tax rules for classifying entities are notoriously vague, as is the UK meaning of ‘tax transparency’. This book breaks new ground by exploring these topics comprehensively, in a world which is well aware of the problems created by entity classification mismatches. In so doing, it addresses, with emphasis on UK tax law, issues such as: the meaning of a ‘partnership’ and a ‘trust’; what is meant and is not meant by ‘tax transparency’, across a range of taxes and situations; how tax treaties have dealt with entity classification questions and related ‘transparency’ issues; how entity classification questions are impacted by EU law; and how the UK approach could be improved, policy-wise and practically, without facilitating tax avoidance. The book compares in detail the UK entity classification approach with that of the US, the Netherlands and France. Appendices consider the unusual UK capital gains tax treatment of partnerships, as well as the special transparency rules which can apply where a partnership is party to loans or derivative contracts, or owns intangible assets. Questions of entity classification and tax transparency are of fundamental importance in any mature tax system and especially in a globalised economy. This book unlocks those questions for both academics and practitioners.
