Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collective Bargaining for Poultry Feed Prices: California Poultry feed bargaining groups in California appeared to have lowered feed prices to the minimum level possible within the framework of the industry in their areas. Limited data indicated that combined milling and delivery charges to group members ranged from to $5 per ton above weekly costs of ingredients in 1965. The consensus of the members was that the bargaining groups also had succeeded in continuing to obtain high quality feed. They further believed that competition, for which their bargaining groups were partly responsible, had forced the industry to speed up technological changes. The automation of feed mills and the use of more efficient equipment had made it possible for millers to reduce unit costs, provided they could increase their volume.
