Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the New-York Historical Society for the Year 1877 This Winter I have been forced by the Lawyers into a public dispute in supporting the Kings Instructions. They have placed their hopes Of success in clamorous noise artificially raised which it was not in my power to prevent, tho' I endeavoured all I could to have the matter in Dispute quietly submitted to his Majesty's determination in his Privy Council: but this did not suit their purpose. Notwithstanding of all the artifice which has been used to excite animosity among the People, they will quietly submit to what ever the King shall think fit to Determine. Col. Robinson was present at the public Debates, can inform you of what you may be desirous to know in this or any thing else relating to this Country. I am with great respect, and very affectionately Sir Yr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: An illuminating and lively narrative of Charles Darwin’s formative years and adventurous voyage aboard the H.M.S. Beagle. Winner of the Georgia Author of the Year Award for Biography/Memoir Charles Darwin—alongside Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein—ranks among the world's most famous scientists. In popular imagination, he peers at us from behind a bushy white Old Testament beard. This image of Darwin the Sage, however, crowds out the vital younger man whose curiosities, risk-taking, and travels aboard HMS Beagle would shape his later theories and served as the foundation of his scientific breakthroughs. Though storied, the Beagle's voyage is frequently misunderstood, its mission and geographical breadth unacknowledged. The voyage's activities associated with South America—particularly its stop in the Galapagos archipelago, off Ecuador’s coast—eclipse the fact that the Beagle, sailing in Atlantic, Pacific and Indian ocean waters, also circumnavigated the globe. Mere happenstance placed Darwin aboard the Beagle—an invitation to sail as a conversation companion on natural-history topics for the ship's depression-prone captain. Darwin was only twenty-two years old, an unproven, unknown, aspiring geologist when the ship embarked on what stretched into its five-year voyage. Moreover, conducting marine surveys of distance ports and coasts, the Beagle's purposes were only inadvertently scientific. And with no formal shipboard duties or rank, Darwin, after arranging to meet the Beagle at another port, often left the ship to conduct overland excursions. Those outings, lasting weeks, even months, took him across mountains, pampas, rainforests, and deserts. An expert horseman and marksman, he won the admiration of gauchos he encountered along the way. Yet another rarely acknowledged aspect of Darwin's Beagle travels, he also visited, often lingered in, cities—including Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Santiago, Lima, Sydney, and Cape Town; and left colorful, often sharply opinionated, descriptions of them and his interactions with their residents. In the end, Darwin spent three-fifths of his five-year "voyage" on land—three years and three months on terra firma versus a total 533 days on water. Acclaimed historian Tom Chaffin reveals young Darwin in all his complexities—the brashness that came from his privileged background, the Faustian bargain he made with Argentina's notorious caudillo Juan Manuel de Rosas, his abhorrence of slavery, and his ambition to carve himself a place amongst his era's celebrated travelers and intellectual giants. Drawing on a rich array of sources— in a telling of an epic story that surpasses in breadth and intimacy the naturalist's own Voyage of the Beagle—Chaffin brings Darwin's odyssey to vivid life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from That's New York! These Irishmen did not care greatly about killing each other. The sound of a hearty smash against a flaming thatch was happiness enough. Pistols were expensive and money was scarce, and since politics was the chief reason for fighting at all, the actual death of one's enemy was not considered essential. F re quently they contented themselves with the use of their fists. As for their effect on society at large, the Irishmen were not particularly bad. Their crime was burglary, simple burglary, and they Were not very good at it. In actual money, they did not cost the community very much. And in at least one respect they were praiseworthy. In the draft riots of the Civil War, two of the big gangs threw their lot with the police, and found vast delight in socking the heads of draft dodgers who showed inclination to resist when the police came after them. Toward the beginning of the century, the Italian immigration began. The newcomers were a little poorer than the Irish, who had been here for a time, and consequently there was an economic push against the Irish occupation of the lower East Side. The Italians crowded into that region, drove the Irish out, and started up their own gangs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women of New York, or Social Life in the Great City Young men and women who read this work will perceive everywhere in its pages the emptiness and folly of all social crime, and the necessity for increased vigilance lest they are tempted to their ruin. To the young men who are strangers to the city and the machinations of its degraded ones to entrap them, we say, You will herein see the precipice at your feet and more easily escape it. To the young women who come hither in search of employment or friends, though poverty press you down, though obscurity throw its mantle over y'ou and though friends frown at you, you should set your face against the first step toward the deep depths herein depicted. Middle-aged persons, prominent members of, and leaders in, society, and others, who are the parents of promising sons and daughters, will herein find revelations the knowledge of which may be of inestimable value. There are doubtless many true and noble women among the fashion and intelligence of the great city, but, we regret to say, the army of the faithless and sinning ones seems to outnumber them In proportions and outrank them in influence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first generations of European settlement in North America, a number of interconnected Northeastern families carved out private empires. In Bound by Bondage, Nicole Saffold Maskiell argues that slavery was a crucial component to the rise and enduring influence of this emergent aristocracy. Dynastic families built prestige based on shared notions of mastery, establishing sprawling manorial estates and securing cross-colonial landholdings and trading networks that stretched from the Northeast to the South, the Caribbean, and beyond. The members of this elite class were mayors, governors, senators, judges, and presidents, and they were also some of the largest slaveholders in the North. Aspirations to power and status, grounded in the political economy of human servitude, ameliorated ethnic and religious rivalries, and united once antagonistic Anglo and Dutch families, ensuring that Dutch networks endured throughout the English and then Revolutionary periods. Using original research drawn from archives across several continents in multiple languages, Maskiell expertly traces the origin of these private familial empires back to the founding generations of the Northeastern colonies and follows their growth to the eve of the American Revolutionary War. Maskiell reveals a multiracial Early America, where enslaved traders, woodsmen, millers, maids, bakers, and groomsmen developed expansive networks of their own that challenged the power of the elites, helping in escapes, in trade, and in simple camaraderie. In Bound by Bondage, Maskiell writes a new chapter in the history of early North America and connects developing Northern networks of merit to the invidious institution of slavery.
