Book excerpt: Only humor writer extraordinaire Mark Twain could inject so much wit and hilarity into the story of Adam and Eve and the Fall of Man. This short story takes the form of excerpts from Eve's personal journal, providing a unique feminine account of the first human couple that deviates in a few important regards from the "official" version.

Twain uses his incredible whit to depict life in America. His books Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn have been read by school children for generations. His life on the Mississippi River has peeked the imagination of boys to go and build a raft and sail off into unknown adventures. The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson is set in a Mississippi river town in the first half on the 19th century. David Wilson is a new lawyer in town and one odd remark has branded him Pudd'nhead Wilson. The story shifts to a slave named Roxy who is 116 black. She switches her son with the masters son so her son could have a chance in the world. The story describes the racism of the antebellum south, even as to seemingly white people with minute traces of Negro ancestry, and the acceptance of that state of affairs by all involved, including the black population.

Mark Twain's story of the antebellum South, first published in 1894, continues to prompt conversations about race and the dire legacy of American slavery. At its heart is Roxy, a mixed-race woman enslaved to a wealthy Missouri family. To save her infant son (whose father was white) from being "sold down the river," Roxy switches him in the cradle with her master's son, setting in motion a train of ironic and bitter events. With its mixture of farce, social commentary, tragedy, and satire, Pudd'nhead Wilson has come to be one of Mark Twain's most-read and most-studied works. But few have read the original Pudd'nhead Wilson. The text familiar since 1894, as editor Benjamin Griffin shows, was heavily edited and censored—first by the author himself under pressure from family and friends, then by his publishers. Now the Mark Twain Project makes available the full text of the Morgan Library manuscript (the original version), together with a critical text of the revised version, stripped of the changes imposed by Mark Twain's editors and publishers—two fascinating ways to encounter this troubled and troubling novel.

So I cried a little, which was natural, I suppose, for one of my age, and after I was rested I got a basket and started for a place on the extreme rim of the circle, where the stars were close to the ground and I could get them with my hands, which would be better, anyway, because I could gather them tenderly then, and not break them. But it was farther than I thought, and at last I had to give it up; I was so tired I couldn't drag my feet another step; and be- Saturday sides, they were sore and hurt me very much. I couldn't get back home; it was too far, and turning cold; but I found some tigers, and nestled in among them and was most adorably comfortable, and their breath was sweet and pleasant, because they live on strawberries. I had never seen a tiger before, but I knew them in a minute by the stripes. If I could have one of those skins, it would make a lovely gown. To-day I am getting better ideas about distances. I was so eager to get hold of every pretty thing that I giddily grabbed for it, sometimes when it was too far off, and sometimes when it was but six inches away but seemed a foot alas, with Saturday thorns between! I learned a lesson; also I made an axiom, all out of my own head my very first one: The scratched Experiment shuns the thorn. I think it is a very good one for one so young. I followed the other Experiment around, yesterday afternoon, at a distance, to see what it might be for, if I could. But I was not able to make out. I think it is a man. I had never seen...

Book excerpt: A person who is ignorant of legal matters is always liable to make mistakes when he tries to photograph a court scene with his pen; and so I was not willing to let the law chapters in this book go to press without first subjecting them to rigid and exhausting revision and correction by a trained barrister-if that is what they are called. These chapters are right, now, in every detail, for they were rewritten under the immediate eye of William Hicks, who studied law part of a while in southwest Missouri thirty-five years ago and then came over here to Florence for his health and is still helping for exercise and board in Macaroni Vermicelli's horse-feed shed, which is up the back alley as you turn around the corner out of the Piazza del Duomo just beyond the house where that stone that Dante used to sit on six hundred years ago is let into the wall when he let on to be watching them build Giotto's campanile and yet always got tired looking as Beatrice passed along on her way to get a chunk of chestnut cake to defend herself with in case of a Ghibelline outbreak before she got to school, at the same old stand where they sell the same old cake to this day and it is just as light and good as it was then, too, and this is not flattery, far from it. He was a little rusty on his law, but he rubbed up for this book, and those two or three legal chapters are right and straight, now. He told me so himself.

Book excerpt: First serialized in "The Century Magazine" between 1893 and 1894, Mark Twain's "Pudd'nhead Wilson" is a murder mystery set before the American Civil War in Missouri, more specifically, in a town on the banks of the Mississippi River. During infancy, a light-skinned black baby and a white-skinned baby were switched at birth by a slave mother. Because the black baby grows up thinking he is white, he is highly racist toward his slaves. The white baby, who thinks he is a slave, grows up with no guidance and makes a living stealing, drinking, and doing other immoral things. During a murder trial, the town lawyer Puddn'head Wilson, who is seen as a peculiar fellow by the townsfolk, is able to expose the boys' true identities. "Puddn'head Wilson" is a story carried by themes of racism, Southern customs, and questions of identity. On the surface it is a witty and satirical tale but as one digs deeper a biting social commentary of racial inequality can be found. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

Book excerpt: Lester RalphBIRTH29 Jul 1876New York, New York County (Manhattan), New York, USADEATH5 Apr 1927 (aged 50)New York, New York County (Manhattan), New York, USAArtist, newspaper journalist, war correspondent, magazine illustrator and son of famous author and journalist Julian Ralph. Lester married Elsie Reasoner, America's first female war correspondent and well known accomplished artist and sculptor, in May 1904. After Elsie's unfortunate sudden death in 1913 while visiting her sister in Lloyd Florida, Lester married again to Pauline and they had a child before 1915, according to census records.Lester Ralph attracted attention by his illustrations of Mark Twain's "Eve's Diary." Because of the graphic drawings, particularly those of Eve, the book was widely banned and the center of much controversy. Mark Twain himself was very pleased with the illustrations. Along with many libraries, when the Charleton Public Library in Pennsylvania in 1906 banned the book because of Lester Ralph's graphic illustrations, Twain referred to those making that decision as "the Charleton Library freaks." In 2011 the library agreed to display the book for a week.New York Times article April 6, 1927 says he was living at 41 West Forty ninth Street when he died April 5, 1927 at age 48 at night at St. Luke's Hospital after an operation for appendicitis..."Eve's Diary" is a comic short story by Mark Twain. It was first published in the 1905 Christmas issue of the magazine Harper's Bazaar, and in book format in June 1906 by Harper and Brothers publishing house.SummaryIt is written in the style of a diary kept by the first woman in the biblical creation story, Eve, and is claimed to be "translated from the original MS." The "plot" of this story is the first-person account of Eve from her creation up to her burial by her mate Adam, including meeting and getting to know him, and exploring the world around her, Eden. The story then jumps 40 years into the future after the Fall and expulsion from Eden.It is one of a series of books Twain wrote concerning the story of Adam and Eve, including Extracts from Adam's Diary, 'That Day In Eden, ' 'Eve Speaks, ' 'Adam's Soliloquy, ' and the 'Autobiography of Eve.' "Eve's Diary" has a lighter tone than the others in the series, as Eve has a strong appreciation for beauty and love. The book may have been written as a posthumous love-letter to Mark Twain's wife Olivia Langdon Clemens, or Livy, who died in June 1904, just before the story was written. Mark Twain is quoted as saying, "'Eve's Diary' is finished
