Download or read book The Lands of Partitioned Poland, 1795-1918 written by Piotr S. Wandycz and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1975-02-01 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lands of Partitioned Poland, 1795-1918 comprehensively covers an important, complex, and controversial period in the history of Poland and East Central Europe, beginning in 1795 when the remnanst of the Polish Commonwealth were distributed among Prussia, Austria, and Russia, and culminating in 1918 with the re-establishment of an independent Polish state. Until this thorough and authoritative study, literature on the subject in English has been limited to a few chapters in multiauthored works. Chronologically, Wandycz traces the histories of the lands under Prussian, Austrian, and Russian rule, pointing out their divergent evolution as well as the threads that bound them together. The result is a balanced, comprehensive picture of the social, political, economic, and cultural developments of all nationalities inhabiting the land of the old commonwealth, rather than a limited history of one state (Poland) and one people (the Poles).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and analyzes artistic interactions both within the Soviet bloc and with the West between 1945 and 1989. During the Cold War the exchange of artistic ideas and products united Europe?s avant-garde in a most remarkable way. Despite the Iron Curtain and national and political borders there existed a constant flow of artists, artworks, artistic ideas and practices. The geographic borders of these exchanges have yet to be clearly defined. How were networks, centers, peripheries (local, national and international), scales, and distances constructed? How did (neo)avant-garde tendencies relate with officially sanctioned socialist realism? The literature on the art of Eastern Europe provides a great deal of factual knowledge about a vast cultural space, but mostly through the prism of stereotypes and national preoccupations. By discussing artworks, studying the writings on art, observing artistic evolution and artists? strategies, as well as the influence of political authorities, art dealers and art critics, the essays in Art beyond Borders compose a transnational history of arts in the Soviet satellite countries in the post war period. ÿ
Book Synopsis The Partitions of Poland 1772, 1793, 1795 by : Jerzy Lukowski
Download or read book The Partitions of Poland 1772, 1793, 1795 written by Jerzy Lukowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Partitions of Poland were a key event in the power politics of the late ancien regime, and had major long term consequences for the balance of power in northern and eastern Europe. Over a period of twenty five years Catherine II (Russia), Frederick II (Prussia) and Maria Theresa and Joseph II (Austria) between them wiped Poland xxx; Europe's second largest countryxxx; off the political map, and Poland disappeared as a state for 120 years. Jerzy Lukowski's new account, the first comprehensive study of the topic in English since 1915, sets the Polish dimension of this story in its wider European context, illuminating the motives and attitudes of the participants and exploring its consequences. This is a major contribution to the diplomatic history of eighteenth century Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though Russia and Germany were far apart in their principal goals, their negative attitude toward the Europe of Versailles brought these two "outcasts" together. Poland, a “child” of the Versailles Peace Treaty, was a bar to the Soviet drive toward a revisionist policy. Therefore, in an atmosphere of mutual distrust and deceit, Russia and Germany entered into an intricate series of negotiations designed to destroy Poland either by military action or by diplomatic pressure. Josef Korbel traces the strange course of these negotiations, basing his work on original documents such as the files of the German Foreign Office, the personal papers of General von Seeckt, documents of the Soviet government, the Supreme Soviet, and the Third International, and on original Polish sources. Originally published in 1963. Book Synopsis The Eastern Question in the Eighteenth Century by : Albert Sorel
Download or read book The Eastern Question in the Eighteenth Century written by Albert Sorel and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eastern Question in the Eighteenth Century: The Partition of Poland and the Treaty of Kainardji Mr. Bramwell has asked me to write a few words of preface to his translation of M. Sorel's admirable study in eighteenth century diplomacy. This study was an early work of the greatest of living historians. My task seems somewhat superfluous in view of the preface in which M. Sorel himself has explained the scope of his essay. Till a comparatively late date the history of the 'Greatest Crime of Modern Times' was known only through Rulhiere's famous Histoire de l'Anarchie de la Pologne (Paris, 1807). But the last phases of the 'Polish Question' were made clear to us when the late Professor von Sybel's History of the French Revolution appeared in English, and the Due de Broglie's Secret du Roi has paved the way for the comprehension of the earlier history of the same question, and has explained the failure of France to assist her two old allies Poland and Turkey. Book Synopsis Transgression as a Rule by : Ulrich Best
Download or read book Transgression as a Rule written by Ulrich Best and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2007 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas currently, German-Polish relations are marked by irritations, the previous phase of politics and discourse from 1990 leading up to the EU-accession of Poland was marked by an increasing stress on Europe in both countries. This was connected with changing practices of cross-border cooperation as well as a change in academic border studies. Transgression as a Rule argues that resulting from this, cross-border cooperation has become a rule. The actors negotiate new, contradictory spaces for their actions: supported by the state but partly uncomfortable with it, drawing on the powerful discourse of cooperation and trying to escape from it. Their practices can also inform the practices of border studies.
