Download or read book Mad Travelers written by Dave Seminara and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At twenty-three, William Simon Baekeland was well on his way to becoming the world’s best traveled person. The “billionaire” heir to a great plastics fortune had already visited 163 countries, but his real passion was finding ways to visit the world’s most challenging destinations—war torn cities, disputed territories, and remote or officially off-limits islands at the margins of the map. He earned rock-star status in the world of extreme travel by finding ingenious ways to bring the world’s most widely traveled people to difficult-to-reach and forbidden places. But when his story began to unravel, an eccentric group of hyper-well-traveled country collectors were left wondering how they had allowed their obsession to blind them to the warning signs that William Baekeland wasn’t who they thought he was. Mad Travelers: A Tale of Wanderlust, Greed and the Quest to Reach the Ends of the Earth delves deep inside the subculture of country collecting, taking readers to danger zones like Mogadishu and geographical oddities like Norway’s nearly impossible-to-reach Bouvet Island. Along the way, this raucous tale of adventure and international intrigue illuminates the perils and pleasures of wanderlust while examining a fundamental question: why are some people compelled to travel, while others are content to stay home? Mad Travelers is a perceptive and at times hilarious account of how the pursuit of everywhere put the world’s greatest travelers at the mercy of a brilliant young con man. Soon to be an HBO documentary.

Book Synopsis Minding the Store by : Stanley Marcus
Download or read book Minding the Store written by Stanley Marcus and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'There is never a good sale for Neiman Marcus unless it's a good buy for the customer.' That was one of the first declarations of business philosophy I heard my father, Herbert Marcus, make soon after I came to work at Neiman Marcus in 1926." Thus began the 1974 edition of Minding the Store. Reprinted in hardcover in 1997 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Neiman Marcus, it is now available for the first time in paperback. Mr. Marcus spent most of his life not only in helping to create a retailing enterprise renowned throughout the world as the epitome of quality, but also in setting high standards for the level of taste of all who desire "the better things in life." In doing so he has played a key role in making Dallas itself a success. "Mr. Stanley," as he was affectionately called by all his Neiman Marcus friends and associates, made The Store a legendary success. Although he retired from active involvement in Neiman Marcus in 1977, the influences of the philosophies of business he developed remained an important part of the training of Neiman Marcus personnel. Those basic principles--best exemplified by his belief in his father's business philosophy--are the reasons Neiman Marcus is today recognized as the taste leader of American retailing. Minding the Store is a warm portrait of a man and an exuberant celebration of the store that has become the best-known landmark in Texas since the Alamo.

Book excerpt: The Pistner House's spellbinding beauty and precision brings to life the culture and history of an elegant era. After years of study, Patricia Pistner commissioned this architectural model to express her love of 18th-century French design. Ten years in the making, the house, rooms and furnishings represent some of the finest examples of the Louis VIV through Louis XVI periods. Utilizing the standardized scale of one-inch to one-foot, more than 60 of the world's finest artists were required to render in exacting detail some of the most important pieces of 18th-century French furniture and accessories. The Pistner House has drawn international acclaim since it went on display in November 2000 as part of the Masters of Miniature exhibit at the Naples Museum of Art. The NY Times reviewer reported that " . . . the revelation of the museum was the miniature rooms. They are the best I have ever seen, and I know my miniature rooms." This book offers the reader the rare opportunity to explore and understand the extraordinary beauty of The Pistner House and other features of the Masters of Miniature exhibit, as captured in exquisite detail in the more than 100 color illustrations.
