Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hellenistic necropolis of Plinthine, located about 800 m west of the urban settlement of Kom el Nogus/Plinthine, on the western margins of the Alexandrian chora, was built on and in the calcarenite ridge or taenia that separates the Mediterranean from Lake Mariut. It has been celebrated as a miniature version of the great Alexandrian necropolises since the first excavations by Achille Adriani in 1937, followed by various unpublished explorations. Nevertheless, it had not been the subject of a comprehensive study combining architectural analysis and investigation of funerary practices. The policy followed by the French expedition (MFTMP)-systematic architectural survey of a necropolis too often previously analyzed through the prism of a few hypogeas, emphasis on phasing, anthropological studies-made it possible to give a more global vision of the Plinthine necropolis than that provided by earlier studies: the dead are no longer absent and the necropolis reveals a history parallel to that of the Plinthine Hellenistic town.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of the master French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is instantly recognizable throughout the world. This is due in no small part to the proselytizing efforts of B. Gerald Cantor (1916-1996), widely acknowledged as the preeminent collector and proponent of Rodin in America during the second half of the twentieth century. He purchased his first piece, a bronze of The Hand of God, in 1946, after being profoundly moved by seeing a marble version of it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. For five decades, Cantor focused all of his efforts on researching and acquiring works by Rodin. Joined by his wife, Iris, in 1977, they built the largest and most comprehensive private collection of Rodin sculpture, drawings, prints, photographs, and memorabilia. Of the approximately 750 works that the Cantors collected, including casts of each of Rodin's major monuments, The Monument to Balzac, The Gates of Hell, The Burghers of Calais, and The Monument to Victor Hugo, 450 have been given away to over 70 museums around the world. Lavishly illustrated, accompanying a worldwide touring exhibition, Rodin: A Magnificent Obsession chronicles the growth of the collection, offering a comprehensive overview that includes works bequeathed to the Cantor Foundation from the Cantor personal collection, as well as new insights into Rodin's working methods and the histories of his most famous masterpieces.

Moore (1827–1891) was the creative leader who brought Tiffany & Co. to unparalleled originality and success during the late nineteenth century. A silversmith, designer, and prodigious collector, Moore sought out exceptional objects from around the world, which he then used as inspiration for Tiffany’s innovative silver designs. This informative, richly illustrated volume, the first study of Moore’s life, collection, and influence, presents more than 170 examples from his vast collection, ranging from Greek and Roman glass to Spanish vases, Islamic metalwork, and Japanese textiles. These are juxtaposed with sixty magnificent silver objects created by the designers and artisans at Tiffany who were inspired by Moore’s acquisitions. Included among them are the world-famous Bryant Vase drawing upon Greek examples, a love cup featuring ornate “Saracenic” decoration, and a chocolate pot incorporating novel techniques influenced by Japanese ceramics and lacquerware. The illuminating texts have been enriched by groundbreaking research into contemporary sources such as newspapers and periodicals, the Tiffany & Co. Archives, and a newly identified technical manual and supervisor’s diaries, all of which provide an intimate look at the firm’s design processes and Moore’s role in shaping them. A valuable contribution to the history of American decorative arts, Collecting Inspiration illuminates both the legendary Tiffany aesthetic and the legacy of a significant collector, designer, and entrepreneur of the Gilded Age.

Book excerpt: Rarely has a subject been served by a book of this stature. Five years in the making, it covers all aspects of Art Nouveau in France in 624 authoritative pages and 740 illustrations. Arwas traces the evolution of the movement as it developed, primarily in Nancy and Paris, with the help of carefully chosen illustrations, many never published before. Ranging from the 1900 Paris exhibition to paintings, graphics and posters and such collecting fields as furniture, jewellery, ceramics, book bindings and sculpture, the informative, witty text ranges over architecture, haute couture, and the role of women in Art Nouveau with a particular look at such theatrical icons as Sarah Bernhardt, Loïe Fuller and the Grandes Horizontales. Destined to become the standard book on the subject, both content and design will appeal widely to the connoisseur, the specialist and the collector, as well as to the novice who will be introduced to the magical wonders of the style.

Book excerpt: With each piece, Patrick Neu turns traditional technique on its head and embarks on new experiments, which he extends for as long as required. The artist works with materials not often found in the art world: bees’ wings, lampblack on glass, crystal, wax, blocks of Chinese ink, butterfly wings, sloughed snakeskin, eggshells, charred paper, etc. For 30 years, Patrick Neu has been developing his art discreetly. The works selected for his exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo are a nod towards this perilous dialogue with the materials and the memory of the world. Daring decisions, the adventure of thought, an insistence on duration and a dialogue with history are all ingredients in the artist’s researches into memory and forgetting processes, the macabre blooming of flowers and the endurance of ancient images. Book contents - “Paying close attention to things”: Patrick Neu in conversation with Jean de Loisy - “Even as the petals fade and fall to the ground, the scent hovers there in the memory”: an essay by Katell Jaffrès, curator of Patrick Neu’s exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo - Notes on a selection of the artist’s works. About the authors - Katell Jaffrès is a curator at the Palais de Tokyo. Published on the occasion of Patrick Neu’s solo exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo, 24.06 2015 – 13.09 2015

Book excerpt: Medicine and Maladies explores the aesthetic, medical, and socio-political contexts that informed depictions of illness and disease in nineteenth-century France. Eleven essays by specialists in nineteenth-century French literature and visual culture probe the acts of writing, reading, and viewing corporeal afflictions across the works of medical practitioners, surgeons, pharmacists, novelists, and artists. Tracing scientific discourse in literary narratives and signalling references to fiction in medical texts, the contributions to this interdisciplinary volume invite us to rethink the relationship between the humanities and the medical sciences.
