Book Synopsis Brancusi, Rosso, Man Ray. Framing Sculpture by : Peter van der Coelen
Download or read book Brancusi, Rosso, Man Ray. Framing Sculpture written by Peter van der Coelen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue is published to accompany the exhibition of the same name in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (8 February-11 May 2014). The exhibition is a unique meeting of the work of three of the most influential artists of the twentieth century: Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957), Medardo Rosso (1858-1928) and Man Ray (1890-1976). The works exhibited and discussed in the catalogue, forty-five sculptures and some hundred photographs they took of them, offer a glimpse over the shoulders of these artists. Not only were Brancusi, Rosso and Man Ray all crucial in the development of modern sculpture, they were innovators in the way they involved photography in their work-not so much for recording it, but as a means of explaining how viewers should look at and interpret their sculptures. They played with the possibilities of the medium-experimental for the time-using overexposure, innovative camera angles and blurring the foreground or background.
Book Synopsis Anthony Flower by : Laurie Glenn Norris
Download or read book Anthony Flower written by Laurie Glenn Norris and published by Fredericton : Beaverbrook Art Gallery. This book was released on 2006 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A romantic view of 19th-century Canada -- a domestic complement to the work of Bartlett, Constable, and Kane. Anthony Flower (1792-1875) lived and worked in New Brunswick for most of his life. A farmer with a lifelong passion for art, he painted until his death at the age of eighty-three. His work opens a window on a time and place now gone. His paintings depict the life that he saw around him in rural New Brunswick and the events and scenes described in newspapers of the day. For most people in early nineteenth-century North America, reading, writing, and painting took a back seat to the day-to-day struggle to set up homesteads and provide for families. But Flower came from a family and a segment of London society where artistic accomplishment would have been expected and valued. Anthony Flower's art was among the first in New Brunswick to depict rural New Brunswick. Through his paintings, we learn about day-to-day life, religion, how people dressed, what their interests were, and what was important to them, all important pieces to our understanding of everyday life in nineteenth-century Canada.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive book brings to light the portraits, private collections and public patronage of the princesse de Lamballe, a pivotal member of Marie-Antoinette’s inner circle. Drawing extensively on unpublished archival sources, Sarah Grant examines the princess’s many portrait commissions and the rich character of her private collections, which included works by some of the period’s leading artists and artisans.
