Book excerpt: John Rawls’s work on justice has drawn more commentary and aroused wider attention than any other work in moral or political philosophy in the twentieth century. Rawls is the author of two major treatises, A Theory of Justice (1971) and Political Liberalism (1993); it is said that A Theory of Justice revived political philosophy in the English-speaking world. But before and after writing his great treatises Rawls produced a steady stream of essays. Some of these essays articulate views of justice and liberalism distinct from those found in the two books. They are important in and of themselves because of the deep issues about the nature of justice, moral reasoning, and liberalism they raise as well as for the light they shed on the evolution of Rawls’s views. Some of the articles tackle issues not addressed in either book. They help identify some of the paths open to liberal theorists of justice and some of the knotty problems which liberal theorists must seek to resolve. A complete collection of John Rawls’s essays is long overdue.

Metzler's doctoral thesis, "Interregional Income Generation," was accepted by Harvard University in 1942 and awarded the Wells Prize for the year 1944-45. Thus the prize essay now appears in print, vastly enriched by the company of Metzler's later papers, all of which have been lighly edited for consistency. The opening chapter of Metzler's thesis investigated the comparative statics and stability properties of a two-country world with Keynesian internal conditions. The second chapter of Metzler's thesis approached the classic "transfer problem" in the context of a Keynesian two-country model. The extensive final chapter of Metzler's thesis, which had not been published, dealt with financial equilibrium in the context of international capital transfers, augmenting the Keynesian income-equilibrium conditions that underlie the basic analysis of the foreign-trade multiplier with the requirement of equilibrium in the market for securities. Metzler's later work in international economics touched upon a number of topics. One of these was the joint influence of tariffs on the terms of trade and distribution of income, explored in two papers published in 1949. Metzler's contributions have also done much to advance the theory of monetary adjustments in the international economy.

Along with Knut Wicksell, Irving Fisher, John Maynard Keynes, James Tobin, and Milton Friedman (his teacher), Lucas revolutionized our understanding of how money interacts with the real economy of production, consumption, and exchange. Lucas’s contributions are both methodological and substantive. Methodologically, he developed dynamic, stochastic, general equilibrium models to analyze economic decision-makers operating through time in a complex, probabilistic environment. Substantively, he incorporated the quantity theory of money into these models and derived its implications for money growth, inflation, and interest rates in the long run. He also showed the different effects of anticipated and unanticipated changes in the stock of money on economic fluctuations, and helped to demonstrate that there was not a long-run trade-off between unemployment and inflation (the Phillips curve) that policy-makers could exploit. The twenty-one papers collected in this volume fall primarily into three categories: core monetary theory and public finance, asset pricing, and the real effects of monetary instability. Published between 1972 and 2007, they will inspire students and researchers who want to study the work of a master of economic modeling and to advance economics as a pure and applied science.

We analyzed man's subjective experiences of the Other and found in them the basis for his understanding of the Other's subjective processes of consciousness. The very assumption of the existence of the Other, however, introduces the dimension of intersub jectivity. The world is experienced by the Self as being inhabited by other Selves, as being a world for others and of others. As we had occasion to point out, intersubjective reality is by no means homogeneous. The social world in which man finds himself exhibits a complex structure; fellow-men appear to the Self under different aspects, to which correspond different cognitive styles by which the Self perceives and apprehends the Other's thoughts, motives, and actions. In the present investigation it will be our main task to describe the origin of the differentiated structures of social reality as well as to reveal the principles underlying its unity and coherence. It must be stressed that careful description of the processes which enable one man to understand another's thoughts and actions is a prerequisite for the methodology of the empirical social sciences. His first articles on the subject appeared in 1958, and he continued for a full fifty years to reshape scholarly perception of the reign of Alexander the Great. A steady output of articles was reinforced by lectures and reviews in his own formidable style. Badian's earliest work transformed understanding of aspects of the Roman Republic, and he continued to work on that area throughout his career; but his series of studies of Alexander the Great (which he deliberately never summed up in a synoptic work) demolished the hero of his predecessors such as Droysen and Tarn, whom he regarded as starry-eyed hero-worshippers, and created an Alexander on the model of a twentieth-century tyrant. The Alexander who was a ruthless killer of his rivals and those who disagreed with him, a mass-murderer in his conquests, and perhaps even an incompetent imperialist, has superseded the Alexander whose mission it was to bring Greek civilization to the ends of the earth. These essays and articles provide a new layer in the interpretation of a figure who has not ceased to fascinate since his death in 323 BC. Many of these articles were published in out-of-the-way journals and conference volumes, and are brought together here for the first time in a collection which will provide student and scholar with a view of the full range of Badian's work on Alexander. Certain ephemeral pieces and all reviews except one have been excluded, by the wish of the author. The twenty-seven articles included were all revised by the author before his death, but there has been no other editorial intervention. The volume also includes a portrait, and an introduction by Eugene Borza surveying Badian's career and contribution. No one who works on Alexander the Great can afford to be without this book.

Book excerpt: This volume in its first part reproduces the treatises and papers wherein Professor H. A. Lorentz developed the electromagnetic theory of phenomena in moving systems up to the point achieved in the relativity theory of uniform translations. We have not included the article in the Encyclopaedie der mathematischen Wissenschaften, Vol. V, number I4, nor the book 'Theory of Electrons', for reasons given previously. The second part of the volume contains the work on the theory ot gravitation. In the early development of the theory the author lays stress on the hypothesis of the stagnant ether, and he so firmly believes in the validity of his formula for the ponderomotive force on electric charges, that he is even prepared to abandon the momentum conservation law (see p. 28). It was Max Abraham who in I903 reconciled Lorentz's formula for the force with the conservation law by interpreting the term at fault as the representation of electromagnetic momentum per unit volume of the field, thus meeting the criticism of Henri Poincare. This interpretation was readily taken over by Lorentz. Again, referring to the transformation formula tor the time variable, Professor Lorentz preferred to think 0/ 'local time' as a mathematical auxiliary. A dmitting and even stressing the impossibility of discrimin ating experimentally between local time and absolute time, he never relinquished the belief that the latter words might have a meaning after all.
