Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Hymns, Sequences and Carols Three of the Greek Hymns, as well as most of the Carols for Christmas and Easter (helmore and Neale), seem to stand midway between his translations and his original work, being imitations rather than translations. The Latin heading above each of the carols refers, generally speaking, to the melody only, the words being a very free translation, or imitation, of that or some other carol. An example given on p. 814 illustrates Dr. Neale's method. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis British Hymn Books for Children, 1800-1900 by : Alisa Clapp-Itnyre
Download or read book British Hymn Books for Children, 1800-1900 written by Alisa Clapp-Itnyre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining nineteenth-century British hymns for children, Alisa Clapp-Itnyre argues that the unique qualities of children's hymnody created a space for children's empowerment. Unlike other literature of the era, hymn books were often compilations of many writers' hymns, presenting the discerning child with a multitude of perspectives on religion and childhood. In addition, the agency afforded children as singers meant that they were actively engaged with the text, music, and pictures of their hymnals. Clapp-Itnyre charts the history of children’s hymn-book publications from early to late nineteenth century, considering major denominational movements, the importance of musical tonality as it affected the popularity of hymns to both adults and children, and children’s reformation of adult society provided by such genres as missionary and temperance hymns. While hymn books appear to distinguish 'the child' from 'the adult', intricate issues of theology and poetry - typically kept within the domain of adulthood - were purposely conveyed to those of younger years and comprehension. Ultimately, Clapp-Itnyre shows how children's hymns complicate our understanding of the child-adult binary traditionally seen to be a hallmark of Victorian society. Intersecting with major aesthetic movements of the period, from the peaking of Victorian hymnody to the Golden Age of Illustration, children’s hymn books require scholarly attention to deepen our understanding of the complex aesthetic network for children and adults. Informed by extensive archival research, British Hymn Books for Children, 1800-1900 brings this understudied genre of Victorian culture to critical light.

The best Christmas hymns are scattered through so many different books with all other kinds of sacred songs that in order to sing'a dozen such hymns it has been necessary heretofore to use perhaps half as many different books. It is to obviate this difficulty that this little book has been compiled. So far as it has been possible to ascertain no such collection has ever before been published to sell at a price so trifling. If the book proves to be of service to choir directors, Sunday School superintendents or any who love the thrill Of the real Christmas Song. Book Synopsis Carols Old and Carols New by : Charles L. Hutchins
Download or read book Carols Old and Carols New written by Charles L. Hutchins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carols Old and Carols New: For Use at Christmas and Other Seasons of the Christian Year The excuse, if any be needed, for the publication of this collection of carols, is a double one: viz., the happy and widely prevailing return in recent years to the old custom of carol singing, and the desire on the part of the compiler to further this custom by placing within the reach of those who engage in it, an abundance of good material. Some of the carols presented in this volume already have appeared in the Parish Choir, but none are here reprinted which have not, in at least one circle, attained some degree of popularity. For the convenience of those who are accustomed to the use of the carols in the leaflet form in which they have been published, they retain the same numbering in this collection. It is not the compiler's purpose to dwell upon the antiquity, the history, and the beauty of the custom of carol singing as well at Easter and other seasons of the Christian Year as in connection with the Christmas Festival. There is an abundance of literature on the subject as may be seen in the list of publications to be found in the latter part of this volume.
