Book Synopsis The New Knighthood by : Malcolm Barber
Download or read book The New Knighthood written by Malcolm Barber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Order of the Temple was founded in 1119 with the limited aim of protecting pilgrims around Jerusalem. It developed into one of the most powerful corporations in the medieval world which lasted for nearly two centuries until its suppression in 1312. Despite the loss of its central archive in the sixteenth century, the Order left many records of its existence as the spearhead of crusading activity in Palestine and Syria, as the administrator of a great network of preceptories and lands in the Latin west, and as a banker and ship-owner. Because of the dramatic nature of its abolition, it has retained its grip on the imagination and consequently there has developed an entirely fictional 'after-history' in which its secret presence has been evoked to explain mysteries which range from masonic conspiracy to the survival of the Turin Shroud. This book offers a concise and up-to-date introduction to the reality and the myth of this extraordinary institution.

Book Synopsis Medieval Sovereignty by : Francesco Maiolo
Download or read book Medieval Sovereignty written by Francesco Maiolo and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Sovereignty examines the idea of sovereignty in the Middle Ages and asks if it can be considered a fundamental element of medieval constitutional order. Francesco Maiolo analyzes the writings of Marsilius of Padua (1275/80-1342/43) and Bartolous of Saxoferrato (1314-57) and assesses their relative contributions as early proponents of popular sovereignty. Both are credited with having provided the legal justification for medieval popular government. Maiolo's cogent reconsideration of this primacy is an important addition to current medieval studies.

Book Synopsis The Crusades, Holy War and Canon Law by : James A. Brundage
Download or read book The Crusades, Holy War and Canon Law written by James A. Brundage and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is concerned, above all, with the legal background and the juristic issues behind the ideology and practice of the medieval Crusades. This is an area that the author was the first to investigate systematically, and there are two particular reasons for his approach: one, the conviction that the historical phenomenon of the Crusades can only be adequately understood within the context of the legal systems that permeated the age; the other, that so much of the documentary evidence ” be it charters, decrees even chronicles ” was produced by people whose perceptions had been shaped by the law. A number of articles focus on the roles of individual crusaders, or address ideological questions, including the very concept of Holy War. Others deal with practical issues and the nature of the obligations incurred by a crusader, and examine the consequences these had, both for the institutions of medieval Europe and for the crusader's own family relationships.

Book Synopsis Marriage in the Western Church by : Philip Lyndon Reynolds
Download or read book Marriage in the Western Church written by Philip Lyndon Reynolds and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage in the Western Church examines how marriage acquired a specifically Christian identity in the Western Church from the patristic through Carolingian periods. It shows how theologians came to regard marriage as an ecclesiastical institution and how they developed a Christian theology of marriage. The first part of the book deals with marriage and divorce in Roman and Germanic law. Other parts deal with marriage and divorce in ecclesiastical law, with the Latin Fathers' distinction between the divine and human laws of marriage, and with the customary stages by which persons became married. Several chapters are devoted to Augustine's views on marriage and sexuality. The author shows how the doctrine of indissolubility became the West's chief means of christianizing marriage, and how theologians found here their preferred arguments for affirming the holiness and the 'sacramentality' of marriage. The author argues that the Western regime of indissolubility was the product of a fourth century reform movement. This publication has also been published in paperback, please click here for details.

Book Synopsis Pionniers du droit occidental au Moyen Age by : André Gouron
Download or read book Pionniers du droit occidental au Moyen Age written by André Gouron and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Pioneers' seems fitting to Professor Gouron to describe the jurists (civilists) of the 12th-century Latin West, that were the bearers of a new science, born in Bologna about 1100. Away from Bologna these pioneers were isolated, scattered from Scotland to Styria or Catalonia, and no more than one hundred can now be identified. These people, and their manuscripts and the relationships between them, are the subject of this collection, the fifth in the Variorum series by André Gouron, himself to be regarded as a pioneer in this field of research. This volume brings together twenty-two studies which have appeared since 1997 in widely scattered publications, often hard to access, along with additional notes and indexes.
