Book excerpt: "SoulCollageTM is a process through which you contact your intuition and create an incredible deck of cards which have deep personal meaning and which will help you with life's questions. Following the simple SoulCollage directions, your hands move fragments of cut-out magazine pictures around, fitting them together in a surprising new way and gluing them down on a card. Cards containing the images you select -- or the images that select you -- come straight through your Soul, bypassing the mind. This is a multi-leveled, creative process which anyone can do. All you need is a good pair of scissors, pre-cut mat board cards, glue, and images you can cut out from magazines, greeting cards, personal photos, postcards, catalogues, and calendars. It is wonderful to have other people with whom to share the process. The cards are fun to take to a friend's house, to work with in therapy or support groups, or to keep on your coffee table."--Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redistributing electoral ridings alters their number, revises their boundaries, or does both at the same time. Ostensibly, the purpose of redistribution is to adjust parliamentary representation for population changes - the growth or decline of population, or shifts in its territorial distribution and social composition. Before an arm's-length commission, headed by a judge, took control of electoral redistribution in the 1960s, parliament - effectively, the majority party - controlled redistribution, raising the possibility that the governing party would adjust the ridings for its own advantage, a practice known as gerrymandering. Providing detailed analyses of parliamentary redistribution in Ontario that preceded the province’s commissioned ridings of the 1960s, George Emery's Principles and Gerrymanders unravels the mechanisms, operational strategies, and exposure to partisanship of parliamentary redistribution and its influence on general election outcomes. Using quantitative research methods, Emery identifies gerrymanders and demonstrates empirically whether or not these worked. He closes with a discussion of the transition to commissioned ridings, what has changed in redistribution, and what continues from the era when parliament redrew ridings. Contextualized with detailed maps and political cartoons, Principles and Gerrymanders is a pioneering study and a major contribution to the literature on Canadian and Ontario political history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses intermedial theories to study collage and montage, tracing the transformation of visual collage into photomontage in the early avant-garde period. Magda Dragu distinguishes between the concepts of collage and montage, as defined across several media (fine arts, literature, music, film, photography), based on the type of artistic meaning they generate, rather than the mechanical procedures involved. The book applies theories of intermediality to collage and montage, which is crucial for understanding collage as a form of cultural production. Throughout, the author considers the political implications, as collages and montages were often used for propagandistic purposes. This book combines research methods used in several areas of inquiry: art history, literary criticism, analytical philosophy, musicology, and aesthetics.

A decade of research, including as-yet unopened archives and interviews with the writers' colleagues, is brought together to produce a comprehensive history of this ill-starred group of renegade writers. Whether the bolshie B.S. Johnson, the globetrotting Ann Quin, the cerebral Christine Brooke-Rose, or the omnipresent Anthony Burgess, these writers each brought their own unique contributions to literature at a time uniquely open to their iconoclastic message. The journey connects historical moments from Bletchley Park, to Paris May '68, to terrorist groups of the 1970s. A tale of love, loss, friendship and a shared vision, this book is a fascinating insight into a bold, provocative and influential group of writers whose collective story has gone untold, until now.

Book excerpt: Collage in Twenty-First-Century Literature in English: Art of Crisis considers the phenomenon of the continued relevance of collage, a form established over a hundred years ago, to contemporary literature. It argues that collage is a perfect artistic vehicle to represent the crisis-ridden reality of the twenty-first-century. Being a mixture of fragmentary incompatible voices, collage embodies the chaos of the media-dominated world. Examining the artistic, sociopolitical and personal crises addressed in contemporary collage literature, the book argues that the 21st Century has brought a revival of collage-like novels and essays.

Book excerpt: "Collage is neither genre or art movement, yet it has had a profound impact upon art of the twentieth century. Far more than Picasso's pasted papers or the layering of images upon images, collage challenges concepts of realism, abstraction, time, dimension, and perspective. As a means of artistic expression it has persisted and expanded to incorporate the increasing sophistication and complexity of image production. The representation of images simultaneously from multiple angles--experimentations out of which collage developed in the early part of our century--takes on increasingly deeper meanings when applied to literature, cinema, photography, music, and video art--all beneficiaries of collage. In Collage: Critical Views art historian Katherine Hoffman has assembled a rich 'collage' of perspectives on the art form. Classic articles by noted art historians and critics including Clement Greenberg, Donald Kuspit, Harold Rosenberg, and Robert Rosenblum are juxtaposed with more recent contributions by Patricia Leighten, Charlotte Stokes, Annegreth Nill, and Gregory Ulmer as well as with articles published here for the first time by such artists as Miriam Schapiro, Richard Newman, and Paul Vangelisti to suggest the range of impact collage has had on twentieth-century artistic expression. With an introductory overview and notes preceding each chapter, Hoffman offers an invaluable collection to scholars, artists, and historians of the twentieth century, unfolding the social, political, philosophical, aesthetic, and technological components and interpretations that make clear collage's pervasive legacy to twentieth-century art." -- Provided by publisher
