Book excerpt: Having been born on April Fool's Day, author Earl B. Russell likes to imagine that in an early sign of his precocious nature, the doctor dried him off, held him up for his mother to see, and then listened as the baby looked at his mother and exclaimed, "April Fool!" Russell's mother knew he was a problem child right off the bat. At first glance, his older brother told everyone Russell would never amount to anything-so much for making a good first impression! As his life began in a rural Tennessee farmhouse, disappointing both his mother and brother, he had nowhere to go but up. In his tragicomic memoir, Russell traces his unimaginable post-World War II life in the American Heartland through zany and introspective accounts that reveal horrific tragedies, soul-searching life lessons, and amusing adventures. Beginning with his upbringing on a poor farm, Russell shares compelling narrative from his coming-of-age journey as he encounters unspeakable losses, revels in the joys of marriage and family, climbs the academic ladder, and confronts a forty-year-old family secret. Along the way, the problem-child-turned-adult finds himself in raw academic brawls in the halls of ivy, conferring with world-renowned retinal researchers, and crossing paths with astronaut Neil Armstrong, Mickey Mantle, Queen Elizabeth, and Prince Charles. Cold Turkey at Nine is an engaging story of resiliency, love, and one mischievous little boy's path as he explores how ordinary people deal with extraordinary circumstances.

Book excerpt: A true story ... The SHOCKING BESTSELLER! "I always thought when consuming drugs they can fuck my body and do whatever they want with me. Because I hate my body, I'm fat and ugly and bulky – and I don't deserve better anyway. But during the moments when the drugs stop working I realize that those people do also fuck my soul. That hurts, well, no, there's more to it than that: it kills you without destroying your body, you're left behind, knowing you're fucked up, beyond cure, and that you gotta live with it ..." Having just come of age, the author tells about her childhood, having grown up in a children's home, started to consume drugs at the age of twelve, about street prostitution motivated by drug addiction, the tough life amidst johns, pimps and drug dealers and her attempt to escape – in one way or another. Unrelently honest and very outspoken, she describes the other side of the world we live in, a life devoid of comfort, without a family, yet subsidized or at least tolerated by the state.

This battle of the bulge is for real and you can either stand up and fight this battle or you can just sit back and do nothing, but sitting back and doing nothing is like playing Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun. But the big wig's who are pushing all of the fast foods and get slim quick merchandise on us don't care about us, all they want to do is make money off of our pain and suffering. So all I'm saying is THINK before you EAT and you will GROW THIN. The world is so different today then it was 40 year's ago, 40 years ago as a kid, I would hear my, parents arguing about if he wants some more food give it to him, but they had no clue to what bad eating habits they were teaching me. Bad eating habits that would help shape the person that I became, but the breaking of these bad eating habits would help in the reshaping of the NEW MAN that I am to become and not just in a physical way, but also mentally. Book excerpt: Madeline Chinn Naas was born with a zest for life and for a love of adventure, but at the end of the day it was family that was really the most important part of her life. In late 1928, her family lost their sheep ranch in Utah while The Great Depression was in full swing. Knowing there were opportunities to survive elsewhere, her Dad and her 6 brothers piled into the car and moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho. Left behind was her Mother and her 4 sisters. Her Mom drove a horse drawn wagon the 500 miles, with the girls, to join the family. Madeline was still in still in her mother’s belly during this journey. She’d be born January 11, 1929. David W. Brower pays tribute to his mom in this book, tracing her upbringing as well as her inspiring battle with esophageal cancer and leukemia. He also looks back his mom’s family, her husband’s, and her 6 brothers and 5 sisters, specifically her sister Leda. David also shares his vulnerability when talking about his relationships with his wives, his children, his friends, and even his employers. In sharing his story, he explores his thoughts about prayer and faith, specifically by giving examples of how God “works all things for good.”(Romans 8-28) As a longtime cancer survivor, he also talks about how health issues affect someone’s loved ones. Join the author as he celebrates the unconditional love between a mom and her son and reveals how he helped his mom pass with grace, love, and dignity.

Book excerpt: Even after half a century of work and much criticism, the driving importance of foreign aid shows no sign of abating. Widespread and acute poverty still ravages many countries of the world, and the understanding of how aid affects the economies of the recipient countries is still far from perfect. These two factors alone warrant the examination offered in this book. The contents of this work try to bring together many strands of the literature, many of which are new and have a bearing on the subject of aid but which have as yet not found their way into the mainstream of the literature. This volume takes a broad survey and also provides a more specific treatment of elements of aid that have yet to be explored in the current literature. This book can serve as both a reference work as well as a research monograph and should be of use for students, as well as for researchers and policy makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consequentialism is a major moral theory in contemporary philosophy: it is the view that the only thing that matters when making moral decisions is the outcome of those decisions. Consequentialists hold that to morally assess an act, we must first evaluate and rank the various ways that things could turn out depending on whether it or some alternative act is performed. Whether we should perform that act thus depends on how its outcome ranks relative to those of its alternatives. Consequentialism rivals deontology, contractualism, and virtue ethics, but, more importantly, it has influenced contemporary moral philosophy such that the consequentialist/non-consequentialist distinction is one of the most central in normative ethics. After all, every plausible moral theory must concede that the goodness of an act's consequences is something that matters, even if it's not the only thing that matters. Thus, all plausible moral theories will accept that both 1) an act's producing good consequences constitutes a moral reason to perform it, and 2) the better its consequences, the more of a moral reason there is to perform it. In this way, much of consequentialist ethical theory is important for normative ethics in general. This Oxford Handbook contains thirty-two previously unpublished contributions by top moral philosophers examining the current state of play in consequentialism and pointing to new directions for future research. The volume is organized into four major sections: foundational issues; objections to consequentialism; its forms and limits; and consequentialism's implications for policy, practice, and social reform.

Book excerpt: On discovering the tragic news that his worst fears have been realized by the sudden sinking of his MTB boat, ‘The Wilful Lady’ and the loss of all her crew at sea, Rex our intrepid adventurer decides to forge a new life for himself as a soldier of fortune. This was not to be as the tide of war was coming back again to Malaya but this time the enemy of my enemy is no longer my friend. An eight thousand strong well trained and equipped communist terrorist insurgency had begun with the murders of British rubber plantation owners and rubber tappers alike. Rex is coerced into working for the British once again despite his objections. To make matters worse, the terrorist who became known to the locals as ‘bandits’ were financially well supported by the Communist Party of Malaya with an active membership of tens of thousands of civilians predominantly Chinese squatters and displaced citizenry. Only this time Rex our protagonist would take up the role of a European Police Sergeant working for the Federation of Malaya Police Force. Before his war was over, Rex will have made new friends and face daring challenges that would change his world.
