The case quickly falls into place as one of a series of similar, drug-related killings, with the murderer, dubbed "the Handyman," identified in a politically explosive turn of events as Caucasian. The killings continue as cops and drug lords alike take to the streets to stop the macabre blood bath. Meanwhile, a trio of hustlers blows into town with the formula for manufacturing Cold Medina, a cheap, super-addictive version of crack cocaine. After the streets are saturated with Medina, the drug is discovered to produce unpredictable aggressive behavior. Tony must travel into his own heart of darkness to save himself and his beloved city.

Book excerpt: Much has been written about Tommy Mottola, one of the most powerful, visionary, and successful executives in the history of the music industry. He discovered, developed and launched the careers of many superstars, including Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and Gloria Estefan, and is credited with creating the "Latin Explosion." He has had the privilege of working alongside Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Barbara Streisand, the Dixie Chicks, Pearl Jam, Aerosmith, Tony Bennett, and Ozzy Osbourne, amongst other music giants. This is his story--a story of the modern music industry, from Elvis to the iPod--through the eyes of the man who made much of it happen. Hitmaker recounts how a kid from the Bronx--and a college dropout--became one of the music industry's most creative and controversial CEOs. For the first time, Tommy lays bare the facts behind the most sensational aspects of his life, such as being married to and developing the career of Mariah Carey, managing Michael Jackson's emotional ups and downs, and the power struggle with his onetime boss and mentor Walter Yetnikoff. Hitmaker will take you inside this world of power, money, and fame as he recounts the fascinating dealings with countless icons, and what it was like to be at the top when the business suddenly changed. Tommy's story is one that will never be duplicated--and here it is, in his own voice, for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Narrating Humanity, Cynthia G. Franklin makes a critical intervention into practices of life writing and contemporary crises in the United States about who counts as human. To enable this intervention, she proposes a powerful new analytical language centered on “narrative humanity,” “narrated humanity,” and “grounded narrative humanity” and foregrounds concepts of the human that emerge from movement politics. While stories of “narrative humanity” propagate the status quo, Franklin argues, those of “narrated humanity” and “grounded narrative humanity” are ones that articulate ways of being human necessary for not only surviving but also thriving during a time of accelerating crises brought on by the intersecting effects of racial capitalism, imperialism, heteropatriarchy, and climate change. Through chapters focused on Hurricane Katrina; Black Lives Matter; the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement; and the Native Hawaiian movement to protect Mauna a Wākea, Franklin reveals how life writing can be mobilized to do more than perpetuate dominant forms of dehumanization that underwrite violence. She contends that life narratives can help materialize ways of being human inspired by these contemporary political movements that are based on queer kinship, inter/national solidarity, abolitionist care, and decolonial connectivity among humans, more-than-humans, land, and waters. Engaging writers, artists, and activists who inspire radical forms of relationality, she comes to write side-by-side with them in her own acts of narrated humanity by refusing the boundaries between autobiography, community-based activism, and literary and cultural criticism.

Book excerpt: Hilarious parodies of Lord of the Rings, the Bourne trilogy, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, Total Recall, I, Robot, and the Die Hard trilogy. Or as I call them, Load of the Rings, Harpocrates, Xenon, Porn Born, starring Chasten Porn (nothing naughty, just a name), Totally Reek, Y'all, Diet Hard, and My Robot. Here's a sample of that, 'Will Smith plays Dull Snooper, a young cop who loves robots so much he even cut off his own arm just so he could have a robot arm put on.' Perhaps I missed the spirit of the piece. Meet Booboo Baggies, Skipper the Ranger, Harpo and Yo Lass, Xenon and Gabby Well, Xenon's daughter, Pinto. Speaking of names, a spy needs inconspicuous names on his fake ID's such as Dildo Pimpernel of Saskatoon, Jar Jar Binks of Katmandu, and Troma Kinky, of Kubla Khan.

Book excerpt: Japan is an intriguing country and culture that both delights and confounds the visitor. In I Love Japan, Craig Briggs gives you uncommonly insightful yet amusing insights into living, working and playing in Japan. In this collection of short and witty essays, Briggs brings you Japanese culture real and unfiltered--through the eyes of a keenly observant, sensitive, and often times smart-assed foreigner. About traditional Japanese cuisine: "Part of the enjoyment of eating soba is the 'slurping'--taking air in rapidly over the soba and enhancing the dining experience. Choking on soba, however, does not enhance the dining experience. And "losing your lunch" in such a traditional setting will also make you "lose face"." Experience the tradition of sumo wrestling and cherry blossom viewing. Understand the danger of climbing Mt. Fuji or of just taking a commuter train at rush hour. Learn and laugh about quirky Japanese refinements to common, often unsightly acts like public drunkenness and trash recycling. And, visit some of the countries surrounding Japan and be thankful you live in Japan instead. Part travel guide and part survival kit, I Love Japan is the only book with the courage to tell you just what really is happening in Japan.

Book excerpt: Former NBA All-Star Jayson Williams' charisma, generosity and high-energy hustle made him one of America's most popular pro athletes during the 90s, and eventually landed him a remarkable $86 million contract with the New Jersey Nets. Referred to as "The People's Player," Jayson's magnetic appeal and tenacity on the boards made him a fierce, yet beloved competitor who spent his time off court flying planes, building houses, and tending to the chores on the farm with his father. His easy charm and sidesplitting one-liners consistently landed him on NBA sportswriters' All-Interview team and made him an audience favorite on the media circuits. But few knew the depths of pain, tragedy and addiction masked by a smile his grandmother called his "most beautiful attire." Lying on his bunk amongst "the most confrontational bunch of misfits," Jayson recalls his rapid climb and mighty fall, and his father's wise words: "A lifetime of happiness as you know it, Jayson, no man alive could bear it. It would be hell on earth. You have to stick to your morning routine." From the New York Times bestselling author of Loose Balls, Humbled is a powerful and candid collection of Jayson's personal letters and journals from behind bars. Shocking revelations, surprising connections, shameful secrets, and scars that only God can heal-Jayson holds nothing back as he writes about his journey to faith on both sides of the barbed-wire fences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sports talk in America has evolved from small-time barroom banter into a major media smorgasbord that runs 24/7 on TV and radio. With hundreds of billions of dollars generated annually by pro and college teams in major markets nationwide, sports fans across the country are more dedicated than ever to their teams. And when it comes to sports talk -- especially all-sports radio -- it's all about entertainment, information, prognostication, analysis, rankings, and endless discussion. Prominent sports-media figures in each of the three target cities -- Cleveland, Detroit, and Washington, D.C. -- engage in this phenomenon with a compilation of sports lists sure to delight as well as stir up debate within these already-buzzing sports communities. List topics include: What were the most lopsided trades in local sports history? Who were the most overrated athletes to play in our town? What local athlete had the best appearance in TV or film? What was the most heartbreaking loss in local sports history? What was the greatest single play in local sports history? Who are our team's most hated rivals? Plus dozens of "guest" lists contributed by famous local sports and entertainment celebrities. With franchises in three of the four major pro sports -- the Browns (NFL), the Indians (MLB), and the Cavaliers (NBA) -- plus a dedicated following of the Ohio State University athletics, Cleveland's fans are some of the most rabid and knowledgeable in the country, and Bill Livingston and Greg Brinda are the acknowledged authorities on Cleveland-area sports.
