Book Synopsis Sustainability and Megaproject Development by : Franca Cantoni
Download or read book Sustainability and Megaproject Development written by Franca Cantoni and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-08 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Megaprojects, also referred to in the literature as Large Engineering Projects or Major Projects, are generally defined as large-scale investment initiatives worth 1b€/$ or more and, facing similar problems independent of the country where they are implemented and the industry they belong to. The common feature of most megaprojects is that they are difficult to design and manage so that their realization and completion is always extremely expensive, often over budget and delivery deadlines also are not met. In the worst-case scenario, they remain unfinished. This book, through its multidisciplinary approach, offers food for thought and alternative interpretations for the complex world of megaprojects. While much research has been conducted and differing approaches have been developed over the last 20 years, there is still a lot of debate surrounding the topic, and a holistic approach for effectively managing these initiatives is still missing. What is clear to all researchers and experts in the field is that a traditional-linear management approach is simply not sufficient, as at many stages of a megaproject, iterative and feedback effect occurs due to stakeholder involvement and increasing and continuous interaction between them. The book promotes the debate among all categories of stakeholders involved in the megaproject’s supply chain, in order to increase the awareness of complex phenomena relating to the critical issues and common problems they face, all over the world, and to seek performance improvement across the whole life cycle of a megaproject, including the selection, design, construction, operation and de- commissioning. The multidisciplinary approach cultivated in the book conveys an innovative way to study megaprojects and their inherent complexities.

Download or read book Engineering Asia written by Hiromi Mizuno and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving together chapters on imperial Japan's wartime mobilization, Asia's first wave of postwar decolonization, and Cold War geopolitical conflict in the region, Engineering Asia seeks to demonstrate how Asia's present prosperity did not arise from a so-called 'economic miracle' but from the violent and dynamic events of the 20th century. The book argues that what continued to operate throughout these tumultuous eras were engineering networks of technology. Constructed at first for colonial development under Japan, these networks transformed into channels of overseas development aid that constituted the Cold War system in Asia. Through highlighting how these networks helped shape Asia's contemporary economic landscape, Engineering Asia challenges dominant narratives in Western scholarship of an 'economic miracle' in Japan and South Korea, and the 'Asian Tigers' of Southeast Asia. Students and scholars of East Asian studies, development studies, postcolonialism, Cold War studies and the history of technology and science will find this book immensely useful.

Book excerpt: In all the developing countries, the vast natural resource have great potentials for the production of fish. Natural water resource are categorized on the basis of altitude, temperature and salinity. The different fish species have adopted as per water ecosystem. Out of identified about 22000 fish species, only 10% belongs to freshwater. Only 107 species have been found suitable as culturable. Hence, major chunk of fish are not cultured by man but used by him as food or other uses. It is therefore, the natural fisheries is very important for human being and proper management and legislation are needed to have the sustainable production. The text of the book is written in simple language so as understandable by scientists, extension workers, students and farmers. Book Synopsis Cold Region Hazards and Risks by : Colin A. Whiteman
Download or read book Cold Region Hazards and Risks written by Colin A. Whiteman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-07-20 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a unique, timely and engaging text with wide ranging geographical coverage. The text brings together, for the first time, information about a vast array of hazards associated with ice and snow, spanning both well known phenomenon (e.g. avalanches) and the less familiar (e.g. river ice jams and ice storms) using, in many cases, material which is rarely seen outside advanced academic research books and journals. The range of ice-related hazards will be introduced and the significance of the current global warming context discussed. Broad physical models of glacial, periglacial and atmospheric cold environments are presented to provide a scientific context for discussion of the human issues of risk, vulnerability impact and mitigation. Key Features: Wide ranging geographical coverage (the Americas, Asia, Australasia, Antarctic & Europe) Localised hazards (avalanches, life storms, landslides) contrasted to those with wider reaching effects (arctic ice loss, ice sheet retreat and wide spread permafrost decay) Includes the latest developments in the field Each chapter includes hazards overview, summery, conclusions, potential projects exercise and key references Includes a supplementary website with figures from the text and further references Each chapter includes a hazards overview, summary, conclusions, potential projects exercise and key references
Book Synopsis An International Perspective on Wetland Rehabilitation by : W.J. Streever
Download or read book An International Perspective on Wetland Rehabilitation written by W.J. Streever and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Streever, author of Bringing Back the Wetlands and numerous technical articles about wetland restoration and creation, worked for two years to bring together this collection of papers. Authors ranging from private landowners to government managers to scientists present regional overviews, case studies, and discussions of various issues. Regional overviews cover areas as small as the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands to areas as large as Australia and Africa. Case studies range from relatively small projects, such as rehabilitation of damage caused by wheel ruts in the high arctic, to much larger projects, such as attempts to rehabilitate thousands of hectares of Northern Territory wetlands in Australia. Seedbank ecology, economics, remote sensing, community involvement, the role of the wetland consulting industry, and other issues are discussed. In an effort to synthesize information from around the world, Joy Zedler presents a model that allows comparison of projects and may lead to better predictability of project outcomes. In An International Perspective on Wetland Rehabilitation, authors describe planting, engineered structures, prescribed flooding, excavation, and other rehabilitation methods, from Israel to New Zealand to the Netherlands and elsewhere. For the first time, one volume offers an impression of the magnitude and diversity of the field of wetland rehabilitation around the globe.
