However, the latter has remained by and large intractable. This monograph introduces the functorial study of the continuous bounded cohomology for topological groups, with coefficients in Banach modules. The powerful techniques of this more general theory have successfully solved a number of the original problems in bounded cohomology. As applications, one obtains, in particular, rigidity results for actions on the circle, for representations on complex hyperbolic spaces and on Teichmüller spaces. A special effort has been made to provide detailed proofs or references in quite some generality.

Book excerpt: This book aims first to prove the local Langlands conjecture for GLn over a p-adic field and, second, to identify the action of the decomposition group at a prime of bad reduction on the l-adic cohomology of the "simple" Shimura varieties. These two problems go hand in hand. The results represent a major advance in algebraic number theory, finally proving the conjecture first proposed in Langlands's 1969 Washington lecture as a non-abelian generalization of local class field theory. The local Langlands conjecture for GLn(K), where K is a p-adic field, asserts the existence of a correspondence, with certain formal properties, relating n-dimensional representations of the Galois group of K with the representation theory of the locally compact group GLn(K). This book constructs a candidate for such a local Langlands correspondence on the vanishing cycles attached to the bad reduction over the integer ring of K of a certain family of Shimura varieties. And it proves that this is roughly compatible with the global Galois correspondence realized on the cohomology of the same Shimura varieties. The local Langlands conjecture is obtained as a corollary. Certain techniques developed in this book should extend to more general Shimura varieties, providing new instances of the local Langlands conjecture. Moreover, the geometry of the special fibers is strictly analogous to that of Shimura curves and can be expected to have applications to a variety of questions in number theory.

Book excerpt: Galois modules over local and global fields form the main subject of this monograph, which can serve both as a textbook for students, and as a reference book for the working mathematician, on cohomological topics in number theory. The first part provides necessary algebraic background: profinite groups and their cohomology, duality groups, free products, modules over complete group rings and their homotopy theory. The arithmetic part deals with Galois groups of local and global fields: local Tate duality, the structure of the absolute Galois group of a local field, extensions of global fields with restricted ramification, cohomology of the idèle and the idèle class groups, Poitou-Tate duality for finitely generated Galois modules, the Hasse principle, the theorem of Grunwald-Wang, Leopoldt's conjecture, Riemann's existence theorem for number fields, embedding problems, the theorems of Iwasawa and of Safarevic on solvable groups as Galois groups over global fields, Iwasawa theory of local and global number fields, and the characterization of number fields by their absolute Galois groups.

Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is the study of locally compact groups from a geometric perspective, with an emphasis on appropriate metrics that can be defined on them. The approach has been successful for finitely generated groups and can be favorably extended to locally compact groups. Parts of the book address the coarse geometry of metric spaces, where ``coarse'' refers to that part of geometry concerning properties that can be formulated in terms of large distances only. This point of view is instrumental in studying locally compact groups. Basic results in the subject are exposed with complete proofs; others are stated with appropriate references. Most importantly, the development of the theory is illustrated by numerous examples, including matrix groups with entries in the the field of real or complex numbers, or other locally compact fields such as $p$-adic fields, isometry groups of various metric spaces, and last but not least, discrete groups themselves. The book is aimed at graduate students, advanced undergraduate students, and mathematicians seeking some introduction to coarse geometry and locally compact groups.

His profound contributions to representation theory, harmonic analysis, ergodic theory, and mathematical physics left a rich legacy for researchers that continues today. This book is based on lectures presented at an AMS special session held in January 2007 in New Orleans dedicated to his memory. The papers, written especially for this volume by internationally-known mathematicians and mathematical physicists, range from expository and historical surveys to original high-level research articles. The influence of Mackey's fundamental ideas is apparent throughout. The introductory article contains recollections from former students, friends, colleagues, and family as well as a biography describing his distinguished career as a mathematician at Harvard, where he held the Landon D. Clay Professorship of Mathematics.

Book excerpt: All the irreducible unitary representations are found, in an explicit way, for the maximal parabolic subgroups in the various classical series of real and complex Lie groups. In each case, the nilradical is similar to the Heisenberg group, and its representations come out of the Kirillov orbit method. Then the representations of the parabolic subgroup are worked out from Mackey's little group method. The little group usually belongs to a different classical series--but with smaller matrices--so the end result in each series is a recursive statement involving several series.

Book excerpt: The theory of bounded cohomology, introduced by Gromov in the late 1980s, has had powerful applications in geometric group theory and the geometry and topology of manifolds, and has been the topic of active research continuing to this day. This monograph provides a unified, self-contained introduction to the theory and its applications, making it accessible to a student who has completed a first course in algebraic topology and manifold theory. The book can be used as a source for research projects for master's students, as a thorough introduction to the field for graduate students, and as a valuable landmark text for researchers, providing both the details of the theory of bounded cohomology and links of the theory to other closely related areas. The first part of the book is devoted to settling the fundamental definitions of the theory, and to proving some of the (by now classical) results on low-dimensional bounded cohomology and on bounded cohomology of topological spaces. The second part describes applications of the theory to the study of the simplicial volume of manifolds, to the classification of circle actions, to the analysis of maximal representations of surface groups, and to the study of flat vector bundles with a particular emphasis on the possible use of bounded cohomology in relation with the Chern conjecture. Each chapter ends with a discussion of further reading that puts the presented results in a broader context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a widespread opinion among experts that (continuous) bounded cohomology cannot be interpreted as a derived functor and that triangulated methods break down. The author proves that this is wrong. He uses the formalism of exact categories and their derived categories in order to construct a classical derived functor on the category of Banach $G$-modules with values in Waelbroeck's abelian category. This gives us an axiomatic characterization of this theory for free, and it is a simple matter to reconstruct the classical semi-normed cohomology spaces out of Waelbroeck's category. The author proves that the derived categories of right bounded and of left bounded complexes of Banach $G$-modules are equivalent to the derived category of two abelian categories (one for each boundedness condition), a consequence of the theory of abstract truncation and hearts of $t$-structures. Moreover, he proves that the derived categories of Banach $G$-modules can be constructed as the homotopy categories of model structures on the categories of chain complexes of Banach $G$-modules, thus proving that the theory fits into yet another standard framework of homological and homotopical algebra.

Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic treatment--the first in book form--of the development and use of cohomological induction to construct unitary representations. George Mackey introduced induction in 1950 as a real analysis construction for passing from a unitary representation of a closed subgroup of a locally compact group to a unitary representation of the whole group. Later a parallel construction using complex analysis and its associated co-homology theories grew up as a result of work by Borel, Weil, Harish-Chandra, Bott, Langlands, Kostant, and Schmid. Cohomological induction, introduced by Zuckerman, is an algebraic analog that is technically more manageable than the complex-analysis construction and leads to a large repertory of irreducible unitary representations of reductive Lie groups. The book, which is accessible to students beyond the first year of graduate school, will interest mathematicians and physicists who want to learn about and take advantage of the algebraic side of the representation theory of Lie groups. Cohomological Induction and Unitary Representations develops the necessary background in representation theory and includes an introductory chapter of motivation, a thorough treatment of the "translation principle," and four appendices on algebra and analysis.

Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of articles provided by the participants of the SFB-workshop on C*-algebras, March 8 - March 12, 1999 which was held at the Sonderforschungsbereich "Geometrische Strukturen in der reinen Mathematik" of the University of Münster, Germany. The aim of the workshop was to bring together leading experts in the theory of C* -algebras with promising young researchers in the field, and to provide a stimulating atmosphere for discussions and interactions between the participants. There were 19 one-hour lectures on various topics like - classification of nuclear C* -algebras, - general K-theory for C* -algebras, - exact C* -algebras and exact groups, - C*-algebras associated to (infinite) matrices and C*-correspondences, - noncommutative prob ability theory, - deformation quantization, - group C* -algebras and the Baum-Connes conjecture, giving a broad overview of the latest developments in the field, and serving as a basis for discussions. We, the organizers of the workshop, were greatly pleased with the excellence of the lectures and so were led to the idea of publishing the proceedings of the conference. There are basically two kinds of contributions. On one side there are several articles giving surveys and overviews on new developments and im portant results of the theory, on the other side one finds original articles with interesting new results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an account of the necessary background for group algebras and crossed products for actions of a group or a semigroup on a space and reports on some very recently developed techniques with applications to particular examples. Much of the material is available here for the first time in book form. The topics discussed are among the most classical and intensely studied C*-algebras. They are important for applications in fields as diverse as the theory of unitary group representations, index theory, the topology of manifolds or ergodic theory of group actions. Part of the most basic structural information for such a C*-algebra is contained in its K-theory. The determination of the K-groups of C*-algebras constructed from group or semigroup actions is a particularly challenging problem. Paul Baum and Alain Connes proposed a formula for the K-theory of the reduced crossed product for a group action that would permit, in principle, its computation. By work of many hands, the formula has by now been verified for very large classes of groups and this work has led to the development of a host of new techniques. An important ingredient is Kasparov's bivariant K-theory. More recently, also the C*-algebras generated by the regular representation of a semigroup as well as the crossed products for actions of semigroups by endomorphisms have been studied in more detail. Intriguing examples of actions of such semigroups come from ergodic theory as well as from algebraic number theory. The computation of the K-theory of the corresponding crossed products needs new techniques. In cases of interest the K-theory of the algebras reflects ergodic theoretic or number theoretic properties of the action.

Book excerpt: The problem of determining which S-arithmetic groups have a finite presentation is solved for arbitrary linear algebraic groups over finite extension fields of #3. For certain solvable topological groups this problem may be reduced to an analogous problem, that of compact presentability. Most of this monograph deals with this question. The necessary background material and the general framework in which the problem arises are given partly in a detailed account, partly in survey form. In the last two chapters the application to S-arithmetic groups is given: here the reader is assumed to have some background in algebraic and arithmetic group. The book will be of interest to readers working on infinite groups, topological groups, and algebraic and arithmetic groups.
