Book Synopsis Coherent Structures in Granular Crystals by : Christopher Chong
Download or read book Coherent Structures in Granular Crystals written by Christopher Chong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes a number of fundamental developments at the interface of granular crystals and the mathematical and computational analysis of some of their key localized nonlinear wave solutions. The subject presents a blend of the appeal of granular crystals as a prototypical engineering tested for a variety of diverse applications, the novelty in the nonlinear physics of its coherent structures, and the tractability of a series of mathematical and computational techniques to analyse them. While the focus is on principal one-dimensional solutions such as shock waves, traveling waves, and discrete breathers, numerous extensions of the discussed patterns, e.g., in two dimensions, chains with defects, heterogeneous settings, and other recent developments are discussed. The emphasis on the subject was motivated by models in condensed matter physics, ferroelectrics, high energy physics, and statistical mechanics, leading to developments in mathematical analysis, numerical computation and insights on the physical aspects of the model. The book appeals to researchers in the field, as well as for graduate and advanced undergraduate students. It will be of interest to mathematicians, physicists and engineers alike.
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Waves & Hamiltonian Systems by : Ricardo Carretero-González
Download or read book Nonlinear Waves & Hamiltonian Systems written by Ricardo Carretero-González and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear waves are of significant scientific interest across many diverse contexts, ranging from mathematics and physics to engineering, biosciences, chemistry, and finance. The study of nonlinear waves is relevant to Bose-Einstein condensates, the interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter, optical fibers and waveguides, acoustics, water waves, atmospheric and planetary scales, and even galaxy formation. The aim of this book is to provide a self-contained introduction to the continuously developing field of nonlinear waves, that offers the background, the basic ideas, and mathematical, as well as computational methods, while also presenting an overview of associated physical applications. Originated from the authors' own research activity in the field for almost three decades and shaped over many years of teaching on relevant courses, the primary purpose of this book is to serve as a textbook. However, the selection and exposition of the material will be useful to anyone who is curious to explore the fascinating world of nonlinear waves.
Book Synopsis Acoustic Metamaterials and Phononic Crystals by : Pierre A. Deymier

This book was released on 2013-01-13 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book presents all aspects of acoustic metamaterials and phononic crystals. The emphasis is on acoustic wave propagation phenomena at interfaces such as refraction, especially unusual refractive properties and negative refraction. A thorough discussion of the mechanisms leading to such refractive phenomena includes local resonances in metamaterials and scattering in phononic crystals.

Book Synopsis Optical Waves and Laser Beams in the Irregular Atmosphere by : Nathan Blaunstein
Download or read book Optical Waves and Laser Beams in the Irregular Atmosphere written by Nathan Blaunstein and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book introduces optical wave propagation in the irregular turbulent atmosphere and the relations to laser beam and LIDAR applications for both optical communication and imaging. It examines atmosphere fundamentals, structure, and content. It explains specific situations occurring in the irregular atmosphere and for specific natural phenomena that affect optical ray and laser beam propagation. It emphasizes how to use LIDAR to investigate atmospheric phenomena and predict primary parameters of the irregular turbulent atmosphere and suggests what kinds of optical devices to operate in different atmospheric situations to minimize the deleterious effects of natural atmospheric phenomena.

Book Synopsis Mechanisms and Phylogeny of Mineralization in Biological Systems by : Shoichi Suga
Download or read book Mechanisms and Phylogeny of Mineralization in Biological Systems written by Shoichi Suga and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various kinds of mineralization have been found in many biological systems. Investigations made at a microscopical level using various sophisticated analytical methods and using principles developed in different fields have clarified their mechanisms very much. Sometimes, very similar phenomena have been found in the mineralized tissues of completely different biological systems. Compilation and comparative investigations of such findings obtained from the many specimens systematically collected contribute a great deal to an understanding of the crucial mechanisms and significance of biominerali zation which originated in very primitive organisms and remain in advanced ones. Previously, the functional significance of mineralized tissues was considered mainly from an anatomical point of view based upon their morphological and structural features. However, the recent advance of investigations has made it possible to interpret the func tional significance of biomineralization not only from local and mechanical points of view, but also from a systemic and phylogenetic point of view. It is also well-known that biomineralization has contributed in various ways to geological and oceanographical conditions of the environment in which the organisms were living. During this process, the mechanisms of biomineralization may have evolved to maintain harmony between organisms and their environments.
