Book excerpt: The coherent nuclear 1/40 photoproduction reaction is sensitive to the nuclear matter form factor i.e. the distribution of matter within the nucleus. Accurate measurements of the nuclear matter distribution as charaterised by the r.m.s. radius are important for applications to nuclear theories, neutron stars, atomic parity non-conservation and heavy ion collisions. This thesis presents the results from a new experiment to measure coherent 1/40 photoproduction on 208Pb, 40Ca, 16O and 12C. The ultimate goal of the research programme is to make a high precision measurement of the nature of the neutron skin of 208Pb. The first major step in this direction is to achieve an accurate data set of coherent pion photoproduction which is presented in this thesis. The experiment was performed in the A2 hall of the MAMI electron accelerator facility at the InstitÄut fur Kernphysik, Mainz, Germany. An 883 MeV beam of electrons was directed on to a 101m nickel radiator producing a Bremsstrahlung photon beam which was then 'tagged' with a resolution of 2 MeV using the Glasgow Photon Tagging Spectrometer. The photon beam was incident on one of the 4 experimental targets inducing the reaction A(°,1/40)A. The neutral 1/40s were then detected via their two photon decay in the newly installed 4 1/4 Crystal Ball and TAPS detector systems. The results from all four targets are presented as differential and total cross sections covering the energy range E°=(135-300) MeV and covering the full 180± of the pion polar angle. Comparisons have been made with previous data and with the latest theoretical calculations of Dreschel et. al. which employ detailed pion optical potentials in describing the pion-nucleus final state interaction. It is concluded that the 208Pb cross sections show good agreement with the calculations indicating that the pion-nucleus FSI distortions are well accounted for by the model. A pleasing reduction in statistical and systematic uncertainties from previous measurements is also observed. While the 208Pb cross sections are finalised it is suggested that the 12C and 16O data would benefit from a further analysis utilising the coincident detection of nuclear decay photons to isolate incoherent events and allow a more detailed comparison with theory. A first comparison of the theoretical model with the new high quality data gives first indications of a neutron skin on 208Pb. A future scheme for the full detailed extraction of the matter distribution from the new data set is also suggested.

Book excerpt: Photoproduction of pions from complex nuclei has become an investigative tool for (1) the detailed form of the elementary photopion amplitude, (2) the pion-nucleus optical potential, (3) nuclear structure, and (4) off-shell and medium effects on the elementary amplitude in nuclear processes. In this book, all these aspects are considered in detail. With improved experimental accuracy and beam tech- nology the study of nuclear pion photoproduction will break new ground and become an even more powerful investigative tool. This monograph is intended as an introductory guide as well as a reference manual for grad- uate students and researchers working in this important area of physics.

For k> 3 x 1014 eV, [Delta]k is small enough that the interaction cannot be localized to a single nucleus. At still higher energies, photons may coherently scatter elastically from bulk matter and emerge as a [rho]°, in a manner akin to kaon regeneration. Constructive interference from the different nuclei coherently raises the cross section and the interaction probability rises linearly with energy. At energies above 1023 eV, coherent conversion is the dominant process; photons interact predominantly as [rho]°. We compute the coherent scattering probabilities in slabs of lead, water and rock, and discuss the implications of the increased hadronic interaction probabilities for photons on ultra-high energy shower development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contract work was initiated by J. Epstein. The emphasis of the proposal was on (a) the continuation of DWIA calculations of the (.gamma., .pi./sup + -/) reaction in the .delta.(1232) region with the extension to the (.gamma., .pi.°) reaction and (b) the application of the DWIA approach to the (.gamma., K) reaction. The (.gamma., .pi.°) work was intended to be in close collaboration with the experimental studies underway at Bates Linear Accelerator and the (.gamma., K/sup + -/) calculations are relevant to proposed high duty factor electron accelerators in the 1 to 4 GeV region. DWIA calculations were carried out for coherent (.gamma., .pi.°) reactions in 12C. Although the DWIA approach seems less fundamental than the current .delta.-hole model calculations, we had hopes that it could be more readily applicable to incoherent reactions leaving the target nucleus in the excited state. Epstein hoped to improve the reliability of the DWIA calculations for coherent (.gamma., .pi.°) production by better treatment of the .delta. propagating in the nuclear medium. In parallel with the (.gamma., .pi.°) work, Epstein carried on an active collaboration with William Donnelly on the (.gamma., K/sup + -/) problem. They had succeeded in a relatively complete description of the reaction for 12C, and were beginning to extend the results to heavy nuclei, when Epstein abruptly resigned his academic post at Boston University (in August 1983) and took an industrial position. Justus Koch of NIKEF, working together with Donnelly, and assisted by modest per diem funds from this grant, the .gamma., K/sup + -/ calculations were carried forward. A copy of the talk by Donnelly entitled Photo- and Electron-Production of Kaons and the Study of Hypernuclei given October 29, 1984 at Bad Honnef, Germany is enclosed. The talk covers the results of the work initiated by Epstein and Donnelly, and completed by Koch and Donnelly.
