Book excerpt: Semiconductor quantum dots tightly confine excited electron-hole pairs, called excitons, resulting in discrete energy levels similar to those of single atoms. Transition energies in the visible or near-infrared make quantum dots suitable for many applications in quantum optics and quantum information science, but to take advantage of all the properties of quantum dot emission, it is necessary to excite them coherently which has been a great challenge due to background scattering of the excitation laser. This dissertation presents the first coherent control of a single quantum dot with observation of its resonance fluorescence and decoherence phenomena. Strong continuous-wave excitation causes the dot to undergo several Rabi oscillations before emitting. These are visible as oscillations in the first- and second-order correlation functions of the emission, and the quantum dot states are "dressed", resulting in a Mollow triplet in the emission spectrum. Some resonantly excited dots, in addition to resonance fluorescence, also emit light from excited states several meV higher in energy. Such up-conversion fits existing theories of decoherence but has never been directly observed before. The up-conversion intensity is shown to be described well by a fairly simple three-level model with single-phonon absorption. The coherent phenomena of resonance fluorescence and the decoherence due to up-conversion paint a dual picture of single quantum dots wherein they can sometimes be treated as an ideal two-level system, but their interactions with the host crystal can lead to many complex behaviors.

Specific work focused on semiconductor quantum dots. The major achievements include the first demonstration of an all optically driven quantum NOT-gate based on using the exciton-Bloch vector as the qubit (Science 2003). We also demonstrated optical density matrix tomography on this system. Since the fast recombination time of quantum dot excitons may limit these systems for quantum information applications, we initiated experiments on negatively charged quantum dots (similar to ions) where for quantum information processing, the qubit would be the electron spin. The energy level structure in this system is a 3-level A-system, which is also of importance to novel coherent optical applications such as slow light and electromagnetic induced transparency. Our experiments in this system are just beginning, but we have successfully demonstrated optically induced coherence in this system, the unexpected effect of spontaneously generated spin coherence, and coherent optical control. A summary of our work leading up to this was published by invitation in Physics Today while the achievement of the quantum NOT-gate was reviewed in Photonics News.

This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis offers a comprehensive introduction to surface acoustic waves in the quantum regime. It addresses two of the most significant technological challenges in developing a scalable quantum information processor based on spins in quantum dots: (i) decoherence of the electronic spin qubit due to the surrounding nuclear spin bath, and (ii) long-range spin-spin coupling between remote qubits. Electron spins confined in quantum dots (QDs) are among the leading contenders for implementing quantum information processing. To this end, the author pursues novel strategies that turn the unavoidable coupling to the solid-state environment (in particular, nuclear spins and phonons) into a valuable asset rather than a liability.

Book excerpt: Single electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) and single photon wavepacket propagating in an optical waveguide are investigated as carriers of quantum bit (qubit) for information processing. Cavity quantum electrodynamics of the coupled system composed of charged QD, microcavity and waveguide provides a quantum interface for the interplay of stationary spin qubits and flying photon qubits via cavity assisted optical control. This interface forms the basis for a wide range of essential functions of a quantum network, including transferring, swapping, and entangling qubits at distributed quantum nodes as well as a deterministic source and an efficient detector of a single photon wavepacket with arbitrarily specified shape. The cavity assisted optical process also made possible ultrafast initialization and QND readout of the spin qubit in QD. In addition, the strong optical nonlinearity of dot-cavity-waveguide coupled system enables phase gate and entanglement operation for flying single photon qubits in waveguides. The coherence of the electron spin is the wellspring of these quantum applications being investigated. At low temperature and strong magnetic field, the dominant cause of electron spin decoherence is the coupling with the interacting lattice nuclear spins. We present a quantum solution to the coupled dynamics of the electron with the nuclear spin bath. The decoherence is treated in terms of quantum entanglement of the electron with the nuclear pair-flip excitations driven by the various nuclear interactions. A novel nuclear interaction, mediated by virtue spin-flips of the single electron, plays an important role in single spin free-induction decay (FID). The spin echo not only refocuses the dephasing by inhomogeneous broadening in ensemble dynamics but also eliminates the decoherence by electron-mediated nuclear interaction. Thus, the decoherence times for single spin FID and ensemble spin echo are significantly different. The quantum theory of decoherence also leads to a method of coherence recovery of the electron by disentanglement, realized through maneuvering the nuclear bath evolution by control of the electron spin-flip. The studies form the basis to outline the construction of a solid-state quantum network for scalable and distributed processing of quantum information.

Book excerpt: Semiconductor quantum dots are attractive building blocks for scalable quantum information processing systems. The spin-up and spin-down states of a single electon, trapped inside a quantum dot, form a single quantum bit (qubit) with a long decoherence time. The electron spin qubit can be coupled to excited states using an optical field, which provides an opportunity to quickly manipulate the spin with optical pulses, and to interface between a stationary matter spin qubit and a 'flying' photonic qubit for quantum communication. The quantum dot's interaction with light may be enhanced by placing the quantum dot inside of an optical microcavity. Finally, the entire system is monolithically integrated, and modern semiconductor fabrication technology offers a path towards scalability. This work presents experimental developments towards the utilization of single quantum dot electron spins in quantum information processing. We demonstrate a complete set of all-optical single-qubit operations on a single quantum dot spin: initialization, an arbitrary gate, and measurement. First, initialization into a pure spin state (logical 0) is accomplished on a nanosecond timescale by optical pumping. Next an ultrafast single-qubit gate, consisting of a series of broadband laser pulses, rotates the spin to any arbitrary position on the Bloch sphere within 40 picoseconds. Finally, the spin state is measured by photoluminescence detection. We then combine these operations to perform a 'spin echo' sequence on the quantum dot. The spin echo extends the qubit's coherence (memory) time from a few nanoseconds to a few microseconds, more than 10^5 times longer than the single-qubit gate time. We next investigate a feedback mechanism between the electron spin and nuclear spins within the quantum dot, which leads to dynamical pumping of the quantum dot's nuclear magnetization. Finally, we take the first step towards interfacing a stationary matter quantum bit with a flying photonic qubit by strongly-coupling a quantum dot exciton to a pillar microcavity. An anti-crossing of the cavity and excitonic modes indicates that the exciton and cavity modes are coupled more strongly to each other than to the rest of their environment, while photon statistics prove that we have successfully isolated and coupled a single quantum dot exciton.
