Book excerpt: Electromagnetic radiation in the extreme UV and soft x-ray spectral range is of steadily increasing importance in fundamental research and industrial applications. An optimum use of the available photons can only be achieved under condition of a comprehensive beam characterization. Following that goal, this work addresses the pathway of extreme UV and soft x-ray radiation from its generation, through the beam transport by the beamline to the probe position. Experimentally, those aspects are optimized at a laser-produced plasma source and at an arrangement for the generation of high-harmonics. Additionally, the coherence of laser beams is analyzed by measurements of the Wigner distribution function. This method is applied to the photon beam of the free-electron laser FLASH, resulting in the entire characterization of its propagation properties.

Introductory chapters cover the most relevant physics and basic methods that young researchers need to master in order to work effectively in the field of nanoscale photonic imaging, from physical first principles, to instrumentation, to mathematical foundations of imaging and data analysis. Subsequent chapters demonstrate how these cutting edge methods are applied to a variety of systems, including complex fluids and biomolecular systems, for visualizing their structure and dynamics, in space and on timescales extending over many orders of magnitude down to the femtosecond range. Progress in nanoscale photonic imaging in Göttingen has been the sum total of more than a decade of work by a wide range of scientists and mathematicians across disciplines, working together in a vibrant collaboration of a kind rarely matched. This volume presents the highlights of their research achievements and serves as a record of the unique and remarkable constellation of contributors, as well as looking ahead at the future prospects in this field. It will serve not only as a useful reference for experienced researchers but also as a valuable point of entry for newcomers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extreme ultraviolet radiation, also referred to as soft X-rays or XUV, offers very special optical properties. The X-UV refractive index of matter is such that normal reflection cannot take place on polished surfaces whereas beam transmission through one micrometer of almost all materials reduces to zero. Therefore, it has long been a difficult task to imagine and to implement devices designed for complex optics experiments in this wavelength range. Thanks to new sources of coherent radiation - XUV-lasers and High Order Harmonics - the use of XUV radiation, for interferometry, holography, diffractive optics, non-linear radiation-matter interaction, time-resolved study of fast and ultrafast phenomena and many other applications, including medical sciences, is ubiquitous.

Book excerpt: The book reviews the most recent achievements in optical technologies for XUV and X-ray coherent sources. Particular attention is given to free-electron-laser facilities, but also to other sources available at present, such as synchrotrons, high-order laser harmonics and X-ray lasers. The optical technologies relevant to each type of source are discussed. In addition, the main technologies used for photon handling and conditioning, namely multilayer mirrors, adaptive optics, crystals and gratings are explained. Experiments using coherent light received during the last decades a lot of attention for the X-ray regime. Strong efforts were taken for the realization of almost fully coherent sources, e.g. the free-electron lasers, both as independent sources in the femtosecond and attosecond regimes and as seeding sources for free-electron-lasers and X-ray gas lasers. In parallel to the development of sources, optical technologies for photon handling and conditioning of such coherent and intense X-ray beams advanced. New problems were faced for the realization of optical components of beamlines demanding to manage coherent X-ray photons, e.g. the preservation of coherence and time structure of ultra short pulses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our ability to manipulate short wavelength radiation (0.01-100nm, equivalent to 120keV-12eV) has increased significantly over the last three decades. This has lead to major advances in applications in a wide range of disciplines such as: the life and medical sciences, including cancer-related studies; environmental science, including studies of pollution and its effects; archaeology and other cultural heritage disciplines; and materials science. Although expansion in application areas is due largely to modern synchrotron sources, many applications will not become widespread, and therefore routinely available as analytical tools, if they are confined to synchrotrons. This is because synchrotrons require enormous capital and infrastructure costs and are often, of necessity, national or international facilities. This seriously limits their scope for applications in research and analysis, in both academia and industry. How many universities, research institutes or even industrial laboratories would have electron microscopes if electron sources cost ú100M or more Hence the need to develop bright but small and (relatively) cheap x-ray sources, not to replace synchrotrons but to complement them. Written by a distinguished team of international authors this exemplary new handbook is based on the COST Action MP0601: Short Wavelength Laboratory Sources. The contents are divided into five main sections. The introductory section provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of radiation, generation mechanisms and short wavelength laboratory sources. The middle sections focus on modelling and simulation, source development: improvement and characterisation and integrated systems: sources, optics and detectors. The final section looks at recent applications.

Book excerpt: This AFOSR grant has been used to support graduate students in the areas of coherence and microscopy at soft x-ray wavelengths. Techniques were developed for characterizing the spatial coherence of undulator radiation, table top soft x-ray lasers, and high harmonic generation of femtosecond pulses at short wavelengths, all in the 1-50 nm wavelength regime. With varying additional attributes, all three sources provide radiation exhibiting a high degree of spatial coherence. In the area of high resolution soft x-ray microscopy, a spatial resolution of 23 nanometers has been demonstrated using new, best-in-the-world, Fresnel zone plate lenses, special nanometer test patterns, and bending magnet radiation in the 1-4 nm region. State-of-the-art images have been obtained of magnetic recording materials with sub-5O nm domains, cryo-prepared biological samples showing detailed views of cells and sub-cellular structures, and modern nanochip interconnects. A new text has been published: D. Attwood, "Soft X-rays and Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation: Principles and Applications" (Cambridge Univ. Press, UK 2000).
