Book Synopsis Infancy and Earliest Childhood in the Roman World by : Maureen Carroll
Download or read book Infancy and Earliest Childhood in the Roman World written by Maureen Carroll and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the developing emphasis in current scholarship on children in Roman culture, there has been relatively little research to date on the role and significance of the youngest children within the family and in society. This volume singles out this youngest age group, the under one-year-olds, in the first comprehensive study of infancy and earliest childhood to encompass the Roman Empire as a whole: integrating social and cultural history with archaeological evidence, funerary remains, material culture, and the iconography of infancy, it explores how the very particular historical circumstances into which Roman children were born affected their lives as well as prevailing attitudes towards them. Examination of these varied strands of evidence, drawn from throughout the Roman world from the fourth century BC to the third century AD, allows the rhetoric about earliest childhood in Roman texts to be more broadly contextualized and reveals the socio-cultural developments that took place in parent-child relationships over this period. Presenting a fresh perspective on archaeological and historical debates, the volume refutes the notion that high infant mortality conditioned Roman parents not to engage in the early life of their children or to view them, or their deaths, with indifference, and concludes that even within the first weeks and months of life Roman children were invested with social and gendered identities and were perceived as having both personhood and value within society.

The full moon seemed to have changed before my eyes into a giant mirror that only had a reflection of the moon. That giant mirror shifted to the side and was now a lighted tunnel. I started to float towards it. As I reached close to it, the hole enlarged. It was clearly a tunnel sucking me up into the sky. I woke up with Goosebumps and felt electric. I dreamt the same dream four times in a row that night. I truly believe that there is a certain unexplained power that one can only see during our dreams. This book is about my nightmares and dreams, along with some true life events. In this book, you will take a journey into some of my visions. An open mind absorbs more clarity. Please enjoy.

Book Synopsis The Odd, the Unusual, and the Strange by : Tracy K. Betsinger
Download or read book The Odd, the Unusual, and the Strange written by Tracy K. Betsinger and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abnormal burial practices have long been a source of fascination and debate within the fields of mortuary archaeology and bioarchaeology. The Odd, the Unusual, and the Strange investigates an unparalleled geographic and temporal range of burials that differ from the usual customs of their broader societies, emphasizing the importance of a holistic, context-driven approach to these intriguing cases. From an Andean burial dating to 3500 BC to mummified bodies interred in the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, Sicily, during the twentieth century, the studies in this volume cross the globe and span millennia. The unusual cases explored here include Native American cemeteries in Illinois, “vampire” burials in medieval Poland, and a mass grave of decapitated soldiers in ancient China. Moving away from the simplistic assumption that these burials represent people who were considered deviant in society, contributors demonstrate the importance of an integrated biocultural approach in determining why an individual was buried in an unusual way. Drawing on historical, sociocultural, archaeological, and biological data, this volume critically evaluates the binary of “typical” versus “atypical” burials. It expands our understanding of the continuum of variation within mortuary practices, helping researchers better interpret burial evidence to learn about the people and cultures of the past. A volume in the series Bioarchaeological Interpretations of the Human Past: Local, Regional, and Global Perspectives, edited by Clark Spencer Larsen
Download or read book The City written by Jacques Lévy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spread of urbanization has transformed the concept of the city, but the way urban planners, urban scientists and, above all, urban dwellers address it has also changed, probably even more so. The city is thus a new topic for geography, a discipline that has experienced an ambiguous relationship to cities in the past. What kind of geography is required in order to bring fresh insight to this renewed field? Drawing together a wide range of texts from philosophers, sociologists and economist as well as geographers and urban planners, this volume provides a theoretical framework within which this question can begin to be explored.
