Book Synopsis Religion and International Relations by : K.R. Dark

Book excerpt: Discussions of religion in international relations have often focused narrowly on religious fundamentalism and on the potentially negative consequences of religious differences. This book attempts to take a more balanced and much broader view of the subject, bringing together new research-based studies by specialists from international relations, history and theology. Case-studies and thematic analyses examine both seldom-discussed issues - such as the political consequences of large-scale religious change - and review old themes in new ways.

In the context where the rule of law is an underlying assumption of the constitutional framework, Emergency Powers in Australia provides a succinct analysis of the sorts of emergency which have been experienced in Australia and an evaluation of the legal weapons available to the authorities to cope with these emergencies. It analyses the scope of the defence power to determine the constitutionality of federal legislation to deal with wartime crises and the 'war' on terrorism, the extent of the executive power and its relationship to the prerogative, the deployment of the defence forces in aid of the civil power, the statutory frameworks regulating the responses to civil unrest, and natural disasters. The role of the courts when faced with challenges to the invocation of emergency powers is explained and analysed.

Download or read book The International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes written by Sami Shubber and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-25 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes is the first original legal instrument of its kind adopted by the World Health Organization, in cooperation with UNICEF. The International Code, for the first time at the international plane, deals with a health issue that is of considerable importance to any society, namely, the healthy growth and development of infants. This volume is a thorough analysis of the provisions of the international code, and gives a detailed account of its history. The aim of the International Code and its material scope and definitions and certain known marketing practices to promote the use of breast-milk substitutes are described, as well as its implementation and the question of whether or not Member States of WHO are under a legal obligation to implement it. Modes of implementation are addressed, as is the monitoring of the International Code by States, individually and collectively, as well as self-monitoring by the infant-food industry, and the role of NGOs, institutions and individuals in the process. An appendix, containing the text of the International Code, and the relevant resolutions of the World Health Assembly and the Executive Board of WHO, a bibliography and a detailed index conclude the volume.

Book Synopsis Competition Law, Technology Transfer and the TRIPS Agreement by : Tu Thanh Nguyen
Download or read book Competition Law, Technology Transfer and the TRIPS Agreement written by Tu Thanh Nguyen and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with a difficult subject with an assured touch and will be a valuable text for postgraduate students, policy-makers and practitioners. European Intellectual Property Review This is the first ever book that addresses the important issue of the competition law, intellectual property and trade interface in a developing world context. The book s unique contribution is a set of comparative case studies on this complex interface. D. Daniel Sokol, University of Florida Levin College of Law, US The book investigates competition law and international technology transfer in the light of the TRIPS Agreement and the experience of both developed and developing countries. On that basis, it draws relevant implications for developing countries. Tu Thanh Nguyen argues that technology transfer-related competition law should be glocalized appropriately for the needs of local contexts, while intellectual property rights (IPR) are globalized. The book reveals that developing countries, according to the TRIPS Agreement, have the right to use domestic competition law to promote access to technology in order to protect national interests and consumer welfare. However, competition law is antitrust. It is neither anti-IPR nor anti-trade. The author finds that developing countries with limited competition law resources should set realistic priorities for the control of technology transfer-related anti-competitive practices. They can reasonably apply and adapt relevant regulations, decisions and judgments from developed country jurisdictions to their own circumstances. Competition Law, Technology Transfer and the TRIPs Agreement is a timely resource for postgraduate students, practitioners, and scholars in international competition law, IPR, and technology transfer. Policymakers in the field of technology transfer-related competition law/policy, especially in developing countries, will also find this book invaluable.
Book Synopsis In Search of Human Dignity by : Karin Sporre
Download or read book In Search of Human Dignity written by Karin Sporre and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2015 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our human dignity can be taken from us in unjust relationships, which makes resistance and a search for dignity necessary. This search can take place in different ways – in this book through academic studies in theology, ethics and education. Human dignity relates to human rights, which are also explored here; moreover, perspectives from gender and postcolonial theory inform the studies. The reflection on human dignity ends in a discussion of education, making the book a resource in addressing contemporary value issues in education. This collection of lectures, articles and papers covers a certain time period. In the texts particular themes recur, which contributes to continuity and coherence. The focus of more recently written chapters takes the discussion in new directions. Karin Sporre, with a PhD in Ethics from Lund University, Sweden, is Professor in Education focusing on values, gender and diversity at Umeå University, Sweden. Since 2001 she has been actively engaged in co-operation with South African colleagues. This has inspired comparison between South Africa and Sweden, exemplified in some of the chapters in her book "In Search of Human Dignity".
Book Synopsis International Handbook of Inter-religious Education by : Kath Engebretson
Download or read book International Handbook of Inter-religious Education written by Kath Engebretson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-17 with total page 1173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook is based on the conviction of its editors and contributing authors that understanding and acceptance of, as well as collaboration between religions has essential educational value. The development of this Handbook rests on the f- ther assumption that interreligious education has an important role in elucidating the global demand for human rights, justice, and peace. Interreligious education reveals that the creeds and holy books of the world’s religions teach about sp- itual systems that reject violence and the individualistic pursuit of economic and political gain, and call their followers to compassion for every human being. It also seeks to lead students to an awareness that the followers of religions across the world need to be, and to grow in, dialogical relationships of respect and understa- ing. An essential aim of interreligious education is the promotion of understanding and engagement between people of different religions and, therefore, it has great potential to contribute to the common good of the global community. Interreligious education has grown from the interfaith movement, whose beg- ning is usually identi?ed with the World Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893. This was the ?rst time in history that leaders of the eastern and we- ern religions had come together for dialogue, and to consider working together for global unity.
Book Synopsis Orphanage Trafficking in International Law by : Kathryn E. van Doore
Download or read book Orphanage Trafficking in International Law written by Kathryn E. van Doore and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orphanage Trafficking in International Law explores the process of orphanage trafficking as a form of child trafficking in international law, examining the contexts in which it occurs and providing a comprehensive, holistic approach to addressing the issue as a form of trafficking. In doing so, this book establishes the method and process of orphanage trafficking as an issue of international concern. It reconceptualises the activity of orphanage tourism as a demand driver for child trafficking and a form of exploitation, and makes recommendations for how countries where orphanage trafficking occurs, as well as countries that contribute to orphanage trafficking via funding and volunteers, should tackle the issue.
