Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although chaotic behaviour had often been observed numerically earlier, the first mathematical proof of the existence, with positive probability (persistence) of strange attractors was given by Benedicks and Carleson for the Henon family, at the beginning of 1990's. Later, Mora and Viana demonstrated that a strange attractor is also persistent in generic one-parameter families of diffeomorphims on a surface which unfolds homoclinic tangency. This book is about the persistence of any number of strange attractors in saddle-focus connections. The coexistence and persistence of any number of strange attractors in a simple three-dimensional scenario are proved, as well as the fact that infinitely many of them exist simultaneously.

Book excerpt: This volume aims to disseminate a number of new ideas that have emerged in the last few years in the field of numerical simulation, all bearing the common denominator of the "multiscale" or "multilevel" paradigm. This covers the presence of multiple relevant "scales" in a physical phenomenon; the detection and representation of "structures", localized in space or in frequency, in the solution of a mathematical model; the decomposition of a function into "details" that can be organized and accessed in decreasing order of importance; and the iterative solution of systems of linear algebraic equations using "multilevel" decompositions of finite dimensional spaces.

Book excerpt: This monograph gives a description of all algorithmic steps and a mathematical foundation for a special numerical method, namely the boundary-domain integral method (BDIM). This method is a generalization of the well-known boundary element method, but it is also applicable to linear elliptic systems with variable coefficients, especially to shell equations. The text should be understandable at the beginning graduate-level. It is addressed to researchers in the fields of numerical analysis and computational mechanics, and will be of interest to everyone looking at serious alternatives to the well-established finite element methods.

This book was released on 1999-06-21 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about differentiability of six operators on functions or pairs of functions: composition (f of g), integration (of f dg), multiplication and convolution of two functions, both varying, and the product integral and inverse operators for one function. The operators are differentiable with respect to p-variation norms with optimal remainder bounds. Thus the functions as arguments of the operators can be nonsmooth, possibly discontinuous, but four of the six operators turn out to be analytic (holomorphic) for some p-variation norms. The reader will need to know basic real analysis, including Riemann and Lebesgue integration. The book is intended for analysts, statisticians and probabilists. Analysts and statisticians have each studied the differentiability of some of the operators from different viewpoints, and this volume seeks to unify and expand their results.

Book excerpt: This is a new approach to the theory of non-holomorphic modular forms, based on ideas from quantization theory or pseudodifferential analysis. Extending the Rankin-Selberg method so as to apply it to the calculation of the Roelcke-Selberg decomposition of the product of two Eisenstein series, one lets Maass cusp-forms appear as residues of simple, Eisenstein-like, series. Other results, based on quantization theory, include a reinterpretation of the Lax-Phillips scattering theory for the automorphic wave equation, in terms of distributions on R2 automorphic with respect to the linear action of SL(2,Z).

Book excerpt: This monograph deals with two aspects of the theory of elliptic genus: its topological aspect involving elliptic functions, and its representation theoretic aspect involving vertex operator super-algebras. For the second aspect, elliptic genera are shown to have the structure of modules over certain vertex operator super-algebras. The vertex operators corresponding to parallel tensor fields on closed Riemannian Spin Kähler manifolds such as Riemannian tensors and Kähler forms are shown to give rise to Virasoro algebras and affine Lie algebras. This monograph is chiefly intended for topologists and it includes accounts on topics outside of topology such as vertex operator algebras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes revolve around three similarity problems, appearing in three different contexts, but all dealing with the space B(H) of all bounded operators on a complex Hilbert space H. The first one deals with group representations, the second one with C* -algebras and the third one with the disc algebra. We describe them in detail in the introduction which follows. This volume is devoted to the background necessary to understand these three problems, to the solutions that are known in some special cases and to numerous related concepts, results, counterexamples or extensions which their investigation has generated. While the three problems seem different, it is possible to place them in a common framework using the key concept of "complete boundedness", which we present in detail. Using this notion, the three problems can all be formulated as asking whether "boundedness" implies "complete boundedness" for linear maps satisfying certain additional algebraic identities.

Book excerpt: This expanded version of the 1997 European Mathematical Society Lectures given by the author in Helsinki, begins with a self-contained introduction to nonstandard analysis (NSA) and the construction of Loeb Measures, which are rich measures discovered in 1975 by Peter Loeb, using techniques from NSA. Subsequent chapters sketch a range of recent applications of Loeb measures due to the author and his collaborators, in such diverse fields as (stochastic) fluid mechanics, stochastic calculus of variations ("Malliavin" calculus) and the mathematical finance theory. The exposition is designed for a general audience, and no previous knowledge of either NSA or the various fields of applications is assumed.

Book excerpt: This volume of original research papers from the Israeli GAFA seminar during the years 1996-2000 not only reports on more traditional directions of Geometric Functional Analysis, but also reflects on some of the recent new trends in Banach Space Theory and related topics. These include the tighter connection with convexity and the resulting added emphasis on convex bodies that are not necessarily centrally symmetric, and the treatment of bodies which have only very weak convex-like structure. Another topic represented here is the use of new probabilistic tools; in particular transportation of measure methods and new inequalities emerging from Poincaré-like inequalities.

Book excerpt: The monograph gives a theoretical explanation of observed cooperative behavior in common pool situations. The incentives for cooperative decision making are investigated by means of a cooperative game theoretical framework. In a first step core existence results are worked out. Whereas general core existence results provide us with an answer for mutual cooperation, nothing can be said how strong these incentives and how stable these cooperative agreements are. To clarify these questions the convexity property for common pool TU-games in scrutinized in a second step. It is proved that the convexity property holds for a large subclass of symmetrical as well as asymmetrical cooperative common pool games. Core existence and the convexity results provide us with a theoretical explanation to bridge the gap between the observation in field studies for cooperation and the noncooperative prediction that the common pool resource will be overused and perhaps endangered.

Book excerpt: Quilts are 2-complexes used to analyze actions and subgroups of the 3-string braid group and similar groups. This monograph establishes the fundamentals of quilts and discusses connections with central extensions, braid actions, and finite groups. Most results have not previously appeared in a widely available form, and many results appear in print for the first time. This monograph is accessible to graduate students, as a substantial amount of background material is included. The methods and results may be relevant to researchers interested in infinite groups, moonshine, central extensions, triangle groups, dessins d'enfants, and monodromy actions of braid groups.

Book excerpt: The book systematically develops the nonlinear potential theory connected with the weighted Sobolev spaces, where the weight usually belongs to Muckenhoupt's class of Ap weights. These spaces occur as solutions spaces for degenerate elliptic partial differential equations. The Sobolev space theory covers results concerning approximation, extension, and interpolation, Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities, Maz'ya type embedding theorems, and isoperimetric inequalities. In the chapter devoted to potential theory, several weighted capacities are investigated. Moreover, "Kellogg lemmas" are established for various concepts of thinness. Applications of potential theory to weighted Sobolev spaces include quasi continuity of Sobolev functions, Poincaré inequalities, and spectral synthesis theorems.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the presentation of some flow problems in porous media having relevant industrial applications. The main topics covered are: the manufacturing of composite materials, the espresso coffee brewing process, the filtration of liquids through diapers, various questions about flow problems in oil reservoirs and the theory of homogenization. The aim is to show that filtration problems arising in very practical industrial context exhibit interesting and highly nontrivial mathematical aspects. Thus the style of the book is mathematically rigorous, but specifically oriented towards applications, so that it is intended for both applied mathematicians and researchers in various areas of technological interest. The reader is required to have a good knowledge of the classical theory of PDE and basic functional analysis.
