Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the basic aspects of Code Division Multiple Access or CDMA. It begins with an introduction to the basic ideas behind fixed and random access systems in order to demonstrate the difference between CDMA and the more widely understood TDMA, FDMA or CSMA. Secondly, a review of basic spread spectrum techniques are presented which are used in CDMA systems including direct sequence, frequency-hopping and time-hopping approaches. The basic concept of CDMA is presented, followed by the four basic principles of CDMA systems that impact their performance: interference averaging, universal frequency reuse, soft handoff, and statistical multiplexing. The focus of the discussion will then shift to applications. The most common application of CDMA currently is cellular systems. A detailed discussion on cellular voice systems based on CDMA, specifically IS-95, is presented. The capacity of such systems will be examined as well as performance enhancement techniques such as coding and spatial filtering. Also discussed are Third Generation CDMA cellular systems and how they differ from Second Generation systems. A second application of CDMA that is covered is spread spectrum packet radio networks. Finally, there is an examination of multi-user detection and interference cancellation and how such techniques impact CDMA networks. This book should be of interest and value to engineers, advanced students, and researchers in communications.

Book excerpt: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) has become one of the main candidates for the next generation of mobile land and satellite communication systems. CDMA is based on spread spectrum techniques, which have been used in military applications for over half a century. Only recently, however, has it been recognised that spread spectrum techniques, combined with some additional steps, can provide higher capacity and better flexibility for the mobile cellular radio communications. Code Division Multiple Access Communications comprises a set of contributions from the most distinguished world scientists in the field. These papers review the basic theory and some of the most important problems related to spread spectrum and CDMA. The topics covered centre on the information theory aspects of CDMA; interference suppression and performance analysis. The material presented in this book summarises the main problems in modern CDMA theory and practice and gives a solid starting point for studying this complex and still challenging field. As such Code Division Multiple Access Communications is essential reading for all researchers and designers working in mobile communication systems and provides an excellent text for a course on the subject.

Book excerpt: In the past 7 years CDMA (Code Division Multiplexed Access) has grown from a small experiment to the technology that is going to replace all existing wireless methods in North America and around the world, replacing even GSM, which up to now has been deeply entrenched in Europe and elsewhere. Though many books cover it conceptually, there are few that deal in the application of CDMA to the day-to-day functioning of the wireless network. This book is focused on the workplace needs of RF managers and engineers. Mathematically difficult material has been culled from the body of the book and placed in carefully organized appendices, so readers have access to derivations but don’t have to wade through them to find the solutions they’re looking for. And unlike any existing CDMA book, this details the similarities and differences between the 2G IS-95 and 3G IS-2000 standards, focusing on the many issues that changeover is going face.

Fettweis lGerman Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR) Institute for Communications Technology 0-82234 Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany lDresden University of Technology Department of Electrical Engineering 0-01062 Dresden, Germany To operate future generation multimedia communications systems high data rate transmission needs to be guaranteed with a high quality of service. For instance, the third generation cellular mobile systems should offer a high data rate up to 2 Mbitls for video, audio, speech and data transmission [1]. In addition, the important challenge for these cellular systems will be the choice of an appropriate multiple access scheme. These trends motivated many researchers to look for multiple access systems that offer high spectral efficiency. The technique of spread spectrum originating from the military applications may allow partly to fulfill the above requirements. Advantages of spread spectrum technique are broadly known: High immunity against multipath distortion, no need for frequency planning, high flexibility, easier variable rate transmission etc. [1-2]. A multiple access scheme based on direct sequence spread spectrum, known as direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) relies on spreading the data stream using an assigned spreading code for each user in the time domain. The capability of minimising multiple access interference (MAl) is given by the cross correlation properties of spreading codes. In the case of multipath propagation the capability of distinguishing one component from others in the composite received signal is offered by the auto-correlation properties of the spreading codes [2].

Book excerpt: The benefits and success of multi-carrier (MC) modulation on one side and the flexibility offered by the spread spectrum (SS) technique on the other side have motivated many researchers to investigate the combination of both techniques since 1993. This combination known as multi-carrier spread spectrum (MC-SS) benefits from the advantages of both systems and offers high flexibility, high spectral efficiency, simple detection strategies, narrow-band interference rejection capability, etc. The basic principle of this combination is straightforward: The spreading is performed as direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) but instead of transmitting the chips over a single carrier, several sub-carriers are employed. The MC modulation and demodulation can easily be realized in the digital domain by performing IFFT and FFT operations. The separation of the users’ signals can be performed in the code domain. MC-SS systems can perform the spreading in frequency direction, which allows for simple signal detection strategies. Since 1993, MC-SS has been deeply studied and new alternative solutions have been proposed. Meanwhile, deep system analysis and comparison with DS-CDMA have been performed that show the superiority of MC-CDMA. The aim of Multi-Carrier Spread-Spectrum is to edit the ensemble of the newest contributions and research results in this new field that have been presented during the 5th International Workshop on Multi-Carrier Spread-Spectrum (MC-SS 2005), held in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technological progress in multi-carrier (MC) modulation led orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to become an important part of beyond 3G cellular mobile communication standards, including LTE and WiMAX. In addition, the flexibility offered by the spread spectrum (SS) and time division multiplexing (TDM) techniques motivated many researchers to investigate several MC combined multiple access schemes, such as MC-CDMA, OFDMA and MC-TDMA. These schemes benefit from the advantages of each sub-system and offer high flexibility, high spectral efficiency, simple detection strategies and narrow-band interference rejection capability. Multi-Carrier and Spread Spectrum Systems is one of the first books to describe and analyze the basic concepts of multi-carrier OFDM transmission and its combination with spread spectrum (MC-CDMA). The different architectures and detection strategies as well as baseband-related transceiver components are explained. This includes topics like FEC channel coding and decoding, modulation and demodulation (IFFT/FFT), digital I/Q-generation, time and frequency synchronisation, channel estimation, frequency domain equalization and RF aspects such as phase noise and non-linearity issues. Concrete examples of its applications for cellular mobile communication systems (B3G/4G) are given. Further derivatives of MC-SS (such as OFDMA, SS-MC-MA and DFT-spread OFDM) and their corresponding applications in the LTE, WiMAX, WLAN and DVB-RCT standards are detailed. Capacity and flexibility enhancements of multi-carrier OFDM systems by different MIMO diversity techniques such as space time/frequency coding (STC, SFC) and software defined radio concepts are also described. Written in a highly accessible manner this book provides a unique reference on the topics of multi-carrier and spread spectrum communications, assisting 4G engineers with their implementation. Fully updated new edition of successful text, including two new chapters on LTE and WiMAX Describes in detail new applications of OFDM in mobile communication standards Examines all multi-carrier spread spectrum schemes, with in-depth analysis, from theory to practice Introduces the essentials of important wireless standards based on multi-carrier/spread spectrum techniques.

Book excerpt: This article considers a quaternary direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) communication system with asymmetric quadrature phase-shift-keying (AQPSK) modulation for unequal error protection (UEP) capability. Both time synchronous and asynchronous cases are investigated. An expression for the probability distribution of the multiple-access interference is derived. The exact bit-error performance and the approximate performance using a Gaussian approximation and random signature sequences are evaluated by extending the techniques used for uniform quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) and binary phase-shift-keying (BPSK) DS-CDMA systems. Finally, a general system model with unequal user power and the near-far problem is considered and analyzed. The results show that, for a system with UEP capability, the less protected data bits are more sensitive to the near-far effect that occurs in a multiple-access environment than are the more protected bits.Wang, C.-W. and Stark, W.Jet Propulsion LaboratoryQUADRATURE PHASE SHIFT KEYING; BINARY PHASE SHIFT KEYING; ASYMMETRY; CODE DIVISION MULTIPLE ACCESS; PHASE SHIFT KEYING; MULTIPLE ACCESS; PROTECTION; RELIABILITY ANALYSIS

Book excerpt: In this thesis, the design of a direct sequence - code division multiple access/binary phase-shift keying (DS-CDMA/BPSK) modem is examined. In this prototype modem design, a short maximal length sequence of 31 chips is used to spread the information data. The design can be extended to longer codes which would provide greater capacity and processing gain. The hardware used in the functional realization of a working design is also discussed, the preliminary operational characteristics of a spread spectrum BPSK modem are achieved. The multi-user performance analysis is conducted using Bit Error Rate (BER) test equipment (HP1645A). The development of the final version of the modem operating at radio frequency (RF) is not conducted, but proof of concept is provided.

Book excerpt: This lecture covers the fundamentals of spread spectrum modulation, which can be defined as any modulation technique that requires a transmission bandwidth much greater than the modulating signal bandwidth, independently of the bandwidth of the modulating signal. After reviewing basic digital modulation techniques, the principal forms of spread spectrum modulation are described. One of the most important components of a spread spectrum system is the spreading code, and several types and their characteristics are described. The most essential operation required at the receiver in a spread spectrum system is the code synchronization, which is usually broken down into the operations of acquisition and tracking. Means for performing these operations are discussed next. Finally, the performance of spread spectrum systems is of fundamental interest and the effect of jamming is considered, both without and with the use of forward error correction coding. The presentation ends with consideration of spread spectrum systems in the presence of other users. For more complete treatments of spread spectrum, the reader is referred to [1, 2, 3].

Book excerpt: The development of a differential phase-shift keying (DPSK), direct sequence, spread spectrum modem is conducted for the purpose of creating a prototype design to be implemented in a multi-user environment. In this design, a maximal length sequence of 31 chips is used to spread the information data. The multi-user performance analysis is performed by using Bit Error Rate (BER) test equipment (1645 Hewlett Packard data error analyzer). A multi-user interference cancellation circuit for two users is introduced, and measurements are performed to show its effectiveness. The design itself encompasses the selection of components and demonstrates that the preliminary operational characteristics of a spread spectrum DPSK modem scheme for CDMA application can be achieved.
