Book excerpt: This book addresses queer issues and current events from a communication perspective to articulate a queer communication pedagogy. Through putting communication pedagogy and queer studies into dialogue, the book investigates how queer theory and critical communication pedagogy intersect in pedagogical spaces. The chapters identify institutional and educational barriers, oppressions, and issues pertaining to queer lives in the context of higher education. Using a variety of critical methodological approaches (including dialogic methods, autoethnography, performative writing, and visual methods), each chapter theorizes a queer communication pedagogy, and offers a path toward and innovative ideas about materializing queer communication pedagogy as a disciplinary endeavor. This book will be of interest to scholars, graduate students, and upper-level undergraduate students in Communication Studies, Critical Communication Pedagogy, Intercultural Communication, Higher Education, Public Pedagogy, and Queer Studies, and Critical/Cultural Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pop Art and Beyond foregrounds the roles of gender, race, and class in encounters with Pop during the Long Sixties. Exploring the work of over 20 artists from 5 continents, it offers new perspectives on Pop's heterogeneity. Featuring an array of rigorous chapters written by both acclaimed experts and emerging scholars, this anthology transcends the borders of individual and national contexts, and suspends hierarchies creating a space for the work of artists like Andy Warhol and the women of the Black Arts Movement to converse. It casts an inclusive look at the intersectional complexities of difference in Pop at a moment that gave rise to a plethora of radical social movements and identity politics. While this book introduces revelatory non-canonical artists into the Pop context or amplifies the careers of others, it is not limited to the confines of fine art. Chapters explore the intersecting variables of oppression and liberation in rituals of youth subcultures as well as practices across media with Pop sources and parallels ranging from Native American objects, Harlem advertisements, and Cordel literature, to stand-up comedy, music, fashion, and design. Pop Art and Beyond thus widens the conversation about what Pop was and what it can be for current art in its struggle for social justice and critiques of power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English-language collection of a contemporary Russian master of the short story, recenly profiled in The New Yorker Maxim Osipov, who lives and practices medicine in a town ninety miles outside Moscow, is one of Russia’s best contemporary writers. In the tradition of Anton Chekhov and William Carlos Williams, he draws on his experiences in medicine to write stories of great subtlety and striking insight. Osipov’s fiction presents a nuanced, collage-like portrait of life in provincial Russia—its tragedies, frustrations, and moments of humble beauty and inspiration. The twelve stories in this volume depict doctors, actors, screenwriters, teachers, entrepreneurs, local political bosses, and common criminals whose paths intersect in unpredictable yet entirely natural ways: in sickrooms, classrooms, administrative offices and on trains and in planes. Their encounters lead to disasters, major and minor epiphanies, and—on occasion—the promise of redemption.

Working between the 1960s and early 1990s, the artists profiled in this compendium represent a broad cross section of L.A.'s art scene. With nearly 400 illustrations and ten essays, this volume presents histories of artistic experimentation and reveals networks of collaboration and exchange that resulted in some of the most intriguing art of late 20th-century America. From "mail art" to the rise of Chicano, gay, and feminist print media; the formation of alternative spaces to punk music and performance; fashion culture to the AIDS crisis—the artists and works featured here comprise a boundary-pushing network of voices and talents.

In the morning, Stella and Bear wake up to horrible news. The sort that sends them racing back to Vermont, and straight into the arms of guilt and family obligations. For all of Bryan “Bear” Barry’s life, three natural laws held true: his best friend Hank was destined for greatness, Hank’s sister Stella was off-limits, and Bear would always manage to negotiate the rocky paths that life threw his way. In the space of two days, that’s all shattered. Bear can't believe he slipped up so badly with Stella. Even if his best friend wasn't lying broken in a hospital bed, it would still be unforgivable. Book excerpt: Numerous studies have shown the positive effects of physical activity (PA) on schoolchildren’s physical, psychological and social health. However, children’s levels of physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle have increased significantly in recent years, leading to a rise in childhood obesity and cardiovascular disease. The MOVI programmes to promote PA in school settings were launched with the aim of mitigating this public health problem. The latest edition implemented by the research group at Centro de Estudios Sociosanitarios analysed the e􀇱fectiveness of an extracurricular PA programme (MOVI-da FIT!) based on high intensity interval training (HIIT) in enhancing schoolchildren’s executive functioning, academic performance, physical fitness and in reducing adiposity and cardiometabolic risk in schoolchildren. This book is intended for professionals in education, health care and sports and PA sciences who are keen to develop and implement PA interventions aimed at preventing obesity, and improving the physical fitness, cognitive performance and academic achievement of schoolchildren. The first part describes the background and the current state of the art that motivate this study, and also details the aims and methodology used. The second part specifies the characteristics of the MOVI-da FIT! programme and provides copiable session plans of the 50 sessions used in the programme, which can be of use for any professional interested in implementing recreational, non-competitive PA interventions.

Theo and his little brother, Ace, need a home, and they show up to claim their inheritance, the house outside of Peach Tree. The three newcomers grudgingly share the shelter they found. But as different as they are, Seth and Theo have a lot in common, mostly their dire circumstances. They lean on each other and try to fight a growing attraction. Theo has doubts about Seth since he has never been with anyone else. That doesn't mean he can resist the sweet hunk. Anyone who hears his voice will begin to feel an inexplicable hatred for Al, so he can only communicate through the written word or speech apps. And his apprentices keep dying in peculiar freak accidents. As his personal life crumbles around him, he devotes his life to his work, all the while trying to crack the secret of his curse. But when his latest apprentice, Gordie, turns up dead in his Glasgow flat, Al discovers evidence that Gordie was living a secret life of crime. Now Al is forced to play detective—while avoiding actual detectives who are wondering why death seems to always follow Al. Investigating his apprentice’s death will take him through Scotland’s magical underworld, and he’ll need the help of a mischievous hobgoblin if he’s to survive.

Cory is just an average 18-year-old nerd who plays video games and reads comic books. Well, mostly average. He’s also gay, in the closet, and into some pretty kinky stuff. Sure, his only outlet is the internet and his left hand, but with college right around the corner, he figures his secret is safe… Right? Except Cory’s two best friends, Derek and Nic, recently found out about that secret. And just like a lot of teenage boys, they decide to think with their groins and take advantage of the situation. With the internet as their guide, they formulate a plan to train Cory into being their personal submissive plaything. As they learn more about themselves, each other, and the kinky world of BDSM, Cory, Derek, and Nic may also discover that romance can bloom in the most unexpected of places.
