Book excerpt: The ever-increasing desire for more energy attainable from a smaller volume of matter has driven researchers to explore advanced materials at the molecular size. Magnetic materials at the nanometer size scale have been the subject of enormous research effort worldwide for more than half a century. Different magnetic nanoparticles have shown different behavior in the absence and presence of an external magnetic field, which has led them to be categorized as soft or hard magnets. Applications range from medical and biomedical devices to magnetic recording media and magnetic sensing have emphasized the importance of this class of materials. Soft magnetic phases have found application in power generation and magnetic targeted drug delivery, while hard magnets have been subject of extensive research for application as energy storage media. Discovery of the exchange-coupling phenomenon between two adjacent hard and soft magnetic phases has attracted scientists to develop advanced materials for energy storage with no usage of fossil fuels: clean energy. In this Dissertation, synthesis of pure phase, soft FeCo nanoparticles with high magnetic moment and hard phase CoxC nanoparticles possessing high coercivity is reported. The polyol method (chemical co-precipitating at polyhydric alcohol as reducing agent) is used to make FeCo and CoxC nanoparticles and the effects of important reaction kinetics parameters on the structure and magnetic properties of the products are studied. Careful analysis of correlations between these parameters and the properties of the magnetic particles has made synthesis of FeCo and CoxC nanoparticles with desired properties possible. Fabrication of MnAlC-FeCo heterostructures as a rare earth-free alternative for high-performance permanent magnet is also reported. To synthesize MnAlC-FeCo, mechanical alloying and dry mixing of MnAlC and FeCo nanoparticles are accomplished followed by annealing in a furnace. Overall, the achieved results in this work enable synthesis of high moment FeCo and high coercivity CoxC with desired structure and magnetic properties obtained through polyol method. In particular, this Dissertation provides the technique to fabricate cobalt carbide nanoparticles without using rare earth elements as a catalyst or as heterogeneous seed nuclei at any stage of the processing.

Ideal magnetic nanoparticle fluids have well-separated, biocompatible nanoparticles with a small size distribution that form a stable colloid. We have combined inert-gas condensation, which produces nanoparticles with low polydispersity, with deposition directly into a surfactant-laden fluid to prevent agglomeration. Iron, cobalt, and iron-nitride nanoparticle fluids fabricated using inert-gas condensation have with mean particle sizes from 5-50 nm and remain stable over long periods of time. Iron and cobalt nanoparticles oxidize on exposure to air, with oxidation and corrosion resistant, while retaining the same high degree of colloidal stability. Magnetic properties vary depending on the nanoparticle size and material, but can be varied from superparamagnetic to ferromagnetic with coercivities on the order of 1000 Oe. In addition to future biomedical applications, inert-gas condensation into fluids offers the opportunity to study interparticle interactions over a broad range of intrinsic materials parameters and interparticle separations.

The primary focus of this dissertation work is the synthesis and optimization of a new permanent magnetic material, in the form of cobalt carbide nanomaterials. The optimization revolved around controlling the crystal phase and particle shape of synthesized cobalt carbide particles; these parameters have significant impact on the observed magnetic properties of magnetic nanoparticles. Co3C was identified to be the preferred crystal phase, leading to better magnetic properties. Cobalt Fumarate was found to be the ideal precursor to synthesize anisotropic Co3C particles and enhance magnetic properties of the synthesized cobalt carbide particles. Lastly, an ethanol based reduction system was employed to develop the greener synthesis of Co and Ni magnetic particles.

For the synthesis of NPs, the shape and size of NPs are dependent of the reaction conditions, which further affect their magnetic properties. Meanwhile, simulation showed that stearate chains can desorb more easily from iron atoms and release to form seeds than from cobalt atoms, which might explain distinctive behavior between the bath complexes. Regarding nanostructures carbon/metal oxide nanoparticles hybrid materials, the properties of the filled magnetic CNTs as heat mediator for photothermal ablation and as contrast agent for MRI were then evaluated and promising results have been obtained. Last, new composite materials (Nb205 nanoparticles/graphene or NTCs) were synthesized and promising results were obtaines in lithium battery tests : their use as anode allowed obtaining reversible capacities of 260 mAh/g.

Book excerpt: The synthesis along with the structural and magnetic properties of manganese (Mn) and cobalt (Co) -incorporated nickel oxide (NiO) inverted core-shell nanoparticles (CSNs) were investigated. The primary objective of this study was to determine the effect of substitution of nickel (Ni) by transition metal ions (Mn2+/Co2+) in affecting the magnetic properties of the resultant CSNs. The core of the CSNs is comprised of NiO and the shell constitutes a Nix(Mn/Co)1-xO phase. The synthesis of the CSNs was accomplished in two steps: first, NiO nanoparticles were synthesized using a thermal decomposition method. In the second step, our hydrothermal nanophase epitaxy method was used to create the core-shell structure. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data show rock salt structure throughout in the Mn/Co incorporated CSNs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show a combination of pseudo-spherical and faceted shapes of CSNs whereas energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) indicates transition metal incorporation in the CSNs. The high-resolution (HR) TEM images confirmed the formation of distinct core and shell regions. Magnetic characterization shows that the Mn- and Co-substituted nickel oxide-based CSNs possess an inverted magnetic structure, with an antiferromagnetic core and a ferro- or ferrimagnetic shell. The coercivity and exchange bias properties are of larger magnitude in Mn-incorporated than in Co-incorporated CSNs.
