Book excerpt: Single crystal specimens of the nickel based alloy SRR99 with [001] orientation are subjected to TMF cycling between 300‡C and 1050‡C, using a -135‡lag between temperature and mechanical strain, and various R ratios. The in-situ observation of the test specimen by means of a computer vision system during TMF testing enables the initiation of microcracks to be detected when cracks have reached lengths of approximately 30 ?m at the surface. High densities of point initiated micro-cracks are generated during the early stages of the TMF life. Crack increment measurements reveal marked differences between the growth rates of individual micro-cracks. The presence of a nickel-aluminide coating consistently reduces the TMF life, due largely to higher growth rates of the main crack in the substrate. In order to estimate the influence of initial crack distribution and density on life, a two dimensional crack shielding model is incorporated in a computer programme which is used to simulate the growth of interacting, parallel surface cracks. The effect of various parameters, including the density and the initial distribution of the microcracks, on the life spent to grow a crack to a pre-defined length, are discussed and the model predictions are compared with the experimental observations.

Book excerpt: Two different modes of coating crack initiation are observed in an aluminide coated single crystal nickel base alloy upon thermomechanical fatigue loading with a cycle where the lag of the strain cycle behind the temperature cycle was 135‡. Minimum and maximum cycle temperatures were 300‡C and 1050‡C, respectively. At applied mechanical strain ranges in excess of 0.8% the coating fails in a brittle manner, initiating a network of nearly equidistant parallel cracks. As opposed to this line initiation mode, a point initiation mode of multiple thumbnail crack origins is found for low strain ranges. Uncoated test specimens fail by point initiation at all strain ranges. The line initiation behaviour can be rationalized using a fracture mechanics approach based on energy release rate concepts to estimate the strain (or stress) to first coating crack and to predict the coating crack density during the test. This model highlights the effects of various parameters, such as coating thickness and temperature, on the failure mode. The influence of the ductile-brittle transition temperature and the stress-temperature coupling on the failure mode of the coating is discussed and the model predictions are compared with the experimental observations.

Book excerpt: The International Symposium "Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading", held at Petten (The Netherlands) on May 22-24, 1995, was jointly organized by the Institute for Advanced Materials of The Joint Research Centre, E. C. , and by the Societe Fran~se de Metallurgie et de Materiaux. The fast heating and cooling cycles experienced by many high temperature components cause thermally induced stresses, which often operate in combination with mechanical loads. The resulting thermal / mechanical fatigue cycle leads to material degradation mechanisms and failure modes typical of service cycles. The growing awareness that the synergism between the combined thermal and mechanical loads can not be reproduced by means of isothermal tests, has resulted in an increasing interest in thermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue testing. This trend has been reinforced by the constant pull by industry for more performant, yet safer high temperature systems, pushing the materials to the limit of their properties. Dedicated ASTM meetings in particular have set the scene for this area of research. The proceedings of the symposium organized by D. A. Spera and D. F. Mowbray in 1975 provided a reference book on thermal fatigue which reflects the knowledge and experimental capabilities of the mid-seventies.

This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation was produced at the Division of Solid Mechanics at Linköping University and is part of a research project, which comprises modelling, microstructure investigations and material testing of cast nickel-base superalloys. The main objective of this work was to deepen the understanding of the fracture behaviour of single-crystal nickel-base superalloys and to develop a model to predict the fatigue crack growth behaviour. Frequently, crack growth in these materials has been observed to follow one of two distinct cracking modes; Mode I like cracking perpendicular to the loading direction or crystallographic crack growth on the octahedral {111}-planes, where the latter is associated with an increased fatigue crack growth rate. Thus, it is of major importance to account for this behaviour in component life prediction. Consequently, a model for the prediction of the transition of cracking modes and the correct active crystallographic plane, i.e. the crack path, and the crystallographic crack growth rate has been developed. This model is based on the evaluation of appropriate crack driving forces using three-dimensional finite-element simulations. A special focus was given towards the influence of the crystallographic orientation on the fracture behaviour. Further, a model to incorporate residual stresses in the crack growth modelling is presented. All modelling work is calibrated and validated by experiments on different specimen geometries with different crystallographic orientations. This dissertation consists of two parts, where Part I gives an introduction and background to the field of research, while Part II consists of six appended papers.
